Day 4: A Day of Reflection and Samurai History in Kanazawa
Join Erzsébet on a cultural journey through Kanazawa, exploring serene museums, historic shrines, and the Nagamachi samurai district.
Finding Peace and History in Kanazawa
Today was a day of quiet contemplation and historical exploration in Kanazawa. Maximilian and I delved into the city's spiritual side, wandering through tranquil spaces and stepping back in time to experience the life of samurai. It was a day that balanced intellectual curiosity with serene reflection, offering a deeper connection to the city's soul.
Our day began, as most do, with a hearty breakfast. We ventured out to Nyumba, a local spot known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious morning fare. It’s always a treat to start the day with a good meal and a sense of anticipation for what lies ahead. Maximilian particularly enjoyed the craft beers they offered, while I stuck to my usual strong coffee, preparing myself for a day of exploration.

Discovering the Wisdom of D.T. Suzuki
Our first stop was the D.T. Suzuki Museum. This museum, dedicated to the life and works of the influential Buddhist philosopher D.T. Suzuki, promised a serene start to the day. As someone who appreciates spaces designed for contemplation, I was eager to experience this museum firsthand. The walk there was pleasant, with the city slowly waking up around us.

The museum itself is an architectural marvel. Designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, the space is minimalist and modern, emphasizing the connection between the indoors and outdoors. The Water Mirror Garden, a still pond reflecting the sky and surrounding trees, was particularly captivating. It invited quiet reflection, and I found myself lost in thought, pondering Suzuki’s teachings on Zen Buddhism. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, appreciated the clean lines and thoughtful design, remarking on how the architecture itself fostered a sense of calm. We spent a good hour wandering through the exhibits, reading about Suzuki’s life and his impact on bringing Zen Buddhism to the West. Though photography was prohibited inside, the memories of the serene atmosphere are etched in my mind.

A Spiritual Journey to Oyama Shrine
Next on our itinerary was Oyama Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the Kaga domain, and his wife, Maeda Matsu. Built in 1873, the shrine is known for its unique Shinmon gate, a blend of Japanese, Chinese, and European architectural styles. This gate, completed in 1875, once served as a symbol of Kanazawa's importance.

As we approached the shrine, the distinct architecture of the gate immediately caught our attention. The stained-glass windows, a European touch, were particularly striking. Maximilian, with his keen eye for detail, pointed out the intricate carvings and the way the different styles harmonized. We learned that the gate was designed with the help of a Dutch architect and that the third floor was rumored to have been used as a lighthouse. The blend of cultures was fascinating, a testament to Kanazawa's openness to the world.
The shrine itself exuded a sense of peace. We watched as locals came to pray, their movements deliberate and respectful. I took a moment to reflect on the history of the Maeda clan and their influence on Kanazawa. The shrine was not just a place of worship but a reminder of the city’s rich heritage. We strolled through the garden, admiring the pond shaped like a biwa (Japanese lute) and the statues of Maeda Toshiie and his wife. The air was filled with the scent of incense and the gentle rustling of leaves, creating a tranquil atmosphere. We spent some time exploring the grounds, admiring the blend of Japanese and European influences in the architecture. It was a beautiful and peaceful place, steeped in history and tradition.
Stepping Back in Time at Nagamachi District
Our final major stop of the day was the Nagamachi District, a well-preserved samurai neighborhood. This area, where samurai and their families once lived, offered a glimpse into the Edo period. I was particularly excited to wander through the narrow lanes and see the traditional houses with their earthen walls.

As we entered the district, it felt like stepping back in time. The cobblestone streets and the meticulously maintained houses created a unique atmosphere. We visited the Nomura Residence, a restored samurai house that showcased the lifestyle of a wealthy samurai family. The inner garden was a highlight, with its tranquil streams and miniature waterfall. Maximilian, who is always fascinated by history, was captivated by the artifacts and the stories of the Nomura family. The house provided a vivid picture of samurai life, from the armor and weapons to the elegant living spaces.
Walking through the Nagamachi District, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like for the samurai and their families. The narrow streets, the high walls, and the carefully designed gardens all spoke of a different era. It was a powerful reminder of the city’s past and the values that shaped its culture.
A Culinary Journey Through Kanazawa
For lunch, we decided to try Kourin Sushi, a local sushi restaurant known for its fresh and affordable sushi. After a morning of cultural immersion, we were both eager to indulge in some local cuisine. The restaurant was small and cozy, with a welcoming atmosphere. We ordered the chef's choice sushi set, which included a variety of fresh, local fish. The sushi was incredibly fresh, and the chef's unique twists on traditional flavors were a delight. Maximilian, who usually prefers cooked food, was pleasantly surprised by the quality and taste of the sushi. It was a perfect midday treat, refueling us for the afternoon's explorations.

As evening approached, we headed to Hibi Sakanazuki Toboku for dinner, a Japanese cuisine restaurant known for its “Kanazawa-esque Seafood and Sake.” The owner, who trained in Kyoto and Tokyo, focuses on local ingredients, ensuring the freshest seafood from local ports. We opted for the chef's tasting menu, which featured a variety of seasonal dishes. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The sake pairings, recommended by the owner, complemented the food perfectly. It was a culinary experience that truly captured the essence of Kanazawa.

To cap off the evening, we decided to visit Kohaku Bar, a local bar known for its cocktails and cozy atmosphere. After a day of walking and exploring, we were ready to relax and unwind. The bar was dimly lit and intimate, with a friendly bartender who crafted some delicious cocktails. Maximilian tried a local sake-based cocktail, while I opted for a classic gin and tonic. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with cultural immersion and historical exploration.

Looking Ahead
As I reflect on today, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kanazawa’s rich culture and history. The D.T. Suzuki Museum offered a moment of quiet contemplation, Oyama Shrine provided a glimpse into the city’s spiritual heritage, and the Nagamachi District transported us back in time to the Edo period. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Tentokuin, Myouryuji (the Ninja Temple), and Kotoji Toro (Stone Lantern). I am eager to see what new discoveries await us.
“Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” Perhaps this quote encapsulates today perfectly. As we prepare for another day of exploration, I am reminded of the transformative power of travel and the importance of immersing oneself in the culture and history of a place. Kanazawa continues to surprise and delight, and I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.
