Whispers of the Ancient World

Today, Maximilian and I ventured deeper into the heart of the Bungle Bungle Range, eager to witness the natural cathedrals and hidden chasms that this ancient landscape holds. It was a day of awe-inspiring beauty, challenging hikes, and a profound connection to the history etched into the rocks around us.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park. The air was already warming up, a reminder that November in Western Australia is not for the faint of heart. After fueling up, we set off towards Cathedral Gorge, one of the park's most iconic landmarks.

The drive itself was an experience, the rugged terrain demanding respect and a sturdy vehicle. As we bumped along the track, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation, the landscape gradually transforming into a panorama of orange and black stripes. It's a landscape that whispers stories of Dreamtime and geological marvel.

Finally, we arrived at the Cathedral Gorge car park, and the enormity of the Bungle Bungle Range truly hit me. The walk to the gorge is about 2 kilometers, a relatively easy trek along a creek bed. Even though the creek was dry this time of year, the towering cliffs on either side made it feel like we were walking through a sacred passage.

As we approached Cathedral Gorge, the space opened up dramatically, revealing a colossal amphitheater of red rock. The scale was simply breathtaking. The acoustics were incredible, and I couldn't resist humming a few bars of a Hungarian folk song, the sound echoing beautifully within the natural dome. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, checked the structural integrity of the overhangs, a data scientist never truly switches off, even on holiday.

The silence within Cathedral Gorge speaks volumes, a testament to the power of time and the artistry of nature.

We spent a good hour exploring the gorge, taking photos, and simply absorbing the atmosphere. I found a quiet spot to sit and sketch in my notebook, trying to capture the immensity of the space and the intricate patterns in the rock. It’s impossible, of course, to truly replicate such grandeur on paper, but the act of trying helps me to connect with the landscape on a deeper level. I did miss having my travel guidebook to identify some of the local flora, a mental note to remember that for future trips.

After our time in Cathedral Gorge, we had lunch at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge. It was a welcome respite from the heat, and the food was surprisingly good, given the remoteness of the location. The lodge itself seemed like a mirage in the middle of the outback, a testament to human ingenuity and resilience.

With renewed energy, we set off for our next destination: Echidna Chasm. Located in the northern part of Purnululu National Park, it was about an hour's drive from Cathedral Gorge. The landscape shifted as we drove, the iconic beehive domes giving way to rugged cliffs and open woodlands. The northern part of the park definitely has a different feel, wilder and more remote.

The Echidna Chasm walk is a 2km return trip, leading into a narrow gorge. As we walked along the rocky creek bed, the towering walls of the chasm closed in around us. Livistona palms clung to the vertical surfaces, their vibrant green fronds a stark contrast to the orange rock.

The chasm narrowed dramatically, to just a few meters wide in some places. Looking up, the sky was visible as a ribbon of blue between the towering walls. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight, a testament to the power of water erosion over millions of years.

Reaching the end of the accessible path required a bit of a climb, including a couple of ladders. The view from the top was well worth the effort, the chasm stretching out before us like a hidden world. The sunlight filtering through the narrow opening created an ethereal glow, illuminating the textures and colors of the rock.

We spent some time in quiet contemplation, marveling at the unique beauty of Echidna Chasm. It felt like we had stumbled upon a secret, a place hidden from the outside world. The silence was broken only by the rustling of the palms and the occasional call of a bird.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company, where we planned to have dinner. The setting sun cast long shadows across the landscape, painting the domes in hues of orange and purple. I reflected on the incredible beauty and geological significance of the Bungle Bungle Range, a place that has been shaped by time and the elements.

Over a hearty dinner at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park, we recounted our adventures of the day. We met some fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter around a crackling campfire. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration and wonder.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Piccaninny Creek Lookout and Mini Palms Gorge. I am particularly excited about Mini Palms Gorge, as I have heard that it's filled with Livistona Palms, and I am keen to see these trees up close. I am also hoping to find some souvenirs at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge.

As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this extraordinary landscape. The Bungle Bungle Range is more than just a collection of rocks; it's a living testament to the power of nature and the enduring spirit of the Australian outback. It’s a place that stays with you long after you’ve left, a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our planet.

The Bungle Bungles have definitely captured my heart and imagination, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Although, I must admit, I am already looking forward to cooler climates and perhaps a nice glass of wine in the Ahr Valley when we return to Bonn.

One thing I know for sure about the Bungle Bungles is that, while beautiful, they are not the easiest place to access. The roads are rough, and a 4WD is definitely required. For those who are not comfortable driving on unsealed roads, there are many tour options available. Scenic flights are also a great way to see the Bungle Bungles, especially during the wet season when the park is closed.

Even though November is considered the hottest month in the Bungle Bungles, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C , we were fortunate to have relatively mild weather. However, it is still important to be prepared for the heat by drinking plenty of water, wearing sunscreen and a hat, and avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.

The Bungle Bungles are also a place of great cultural significance to the Aboriginal people, who have lived in the area for over 20,000 years. It is important to respect their culture and traditions by not disturbing any rock art or burial sites.

I am so glad that we decided to come to the Bungle Bungles, even though it is a long way from Bonn. It is a truly unique and special place that I will never forget.

I would highly recommend the Bungle Bungles to anyone who is looking for an adventure in the Australian outback. Just be sure to do your research and be prepared for the challenges that come with visiting such a remote and rugged location.
