Finding Serenity and Art in Lamu's Embrace

Today was a day of diving deeper into Lamu's soul, exploring its rich spiritual heritage and vibrant artistic community. It's amazing how much history and culture is packed into this small island, and I’m so excited to share my experiences.

Our day began with a traditional Kenyan breakfast at Mama Ntilie. It's always a pleasure to support local businesses, and the food was delicious. I had Mandazi, a slightly sweet fried bread, and chai, a spiced tea that's a staple here. Jan opted for a fruit platter with a side of eggs, eager to fuel up for our day of exploration. The atmosphere was lively, filled with locals chatting and laughing, a perfect start to immerse ourselves in the Lamu vibe.

From there, we ventured to the Masjid Riyadha & Islamic Centre, a place of profound significance in Lamu's Islamic history. Founded in the late 19th century, it stands as one of the most prestigious centers for Islamic studies in East Africa. The serene atmosphere enveloped us as we stepped through its gates. The architecture was beautiful, and it was easy to imagine the many scholars who have passed through its halls. Though non-Muslims can't enter the mosque itself, we were able to appreciate the grounds and learn about its history from a local guide. The guide explained the center's role in propagating Islam in the region and its continued importance as a place of learning and worship.

Next on our itinerary was the Ubunifu Lamu Community Art Center, a complete contrast to the quietude of the mosque. This place bursts with creativity and color! Ubunifu Lamu is dedicated to promoting local art, craftsmanship, and community creativity. The center serves as a space for artists to showcase their work, offering exhibitions, workshops, and events that highlight the cultural heritage of Lamu and the wider East African region. We wandered through the displays of handmade crafts, paintings, and sculptures, each piece telling a story of Lamu's unique blend of Swahili, African, and Arab influences. I was particularly drawn to the intricate textiles and the vibrant paintings that captured the essence of island life. Jan, always keen on supporting community initiatives, purchased a small wooden carving, a memento that we'll treasure.

After immersing ourselves in art and culture, we were ready for a relaxing lunch. We chose Lamu House Restaurant, drawn by its reputation for authentic Swahili cuisine and stunning coastal views. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, reflecting the island's Swahili architecture and vibrant colors. We savored a variety of dishes, including freshly caught seafood, aromatic spices, and traditional recipes passed down through generations. I opted for the Swahili fish curry, while Jan enjoyed a grilled seafood platter. The flavors were incredible, a true taste of Lamu's culinary heritage.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off to explore Manda Creek. To get there, we took a scenic boat ride from Lamu Town to Shela, a journey of about 15-20 minutes. The creek is a tranquil waterway surrounded by lush greenery, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling town. We opted for a leisurely boat ride, gliding through the calm waters and soaking in the natural beauty. The air was filled with the sounds of birds chirping and the gentle lapping of water against the boat. It was incredibly relaxing, a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way to Labanda Restaurant for dinner. We enjoyed some delicious food as the sun went down. It was the perfect end to a full day.

Our final stop for the day was at Sailors Joint, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere and stunning ocean views. Located along the Corniche Path, it offered a perfect spot to unwind with a drink while enjoying the sea breeze. We ordered some local beers and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The ambiance was relaxed and welcoming, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. It was the perfect way to end our day, soaking in the Lamu vibe and making memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Lamu's historical sites, including Mongo Sharif, Siyu Fort and Konge. I’m particularly excited about visiting Siyu Fort, as I've read about its fascinating history and unique architecture. We'll also be visiting African Corner Lamu. I’m also looking forward to trying out Coco Jambo Restaurant. I am so excited for what tomorrow holds!

Lamu continues to surprise and enchant me with its blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. It's a place where you can lose yourself in the moment, connect with the local community, and discover a different way of life. I'm so grateful for this experience and excited to see what adventures tomorrow brings.

I am so glad I got to experience Lamu with Jan. It makes it so much more special to share these experiences with him. He has really enjoyed learning about my heritage and my home country.
