Coastal Bliss and Swahili Treasures

Today was a beautiful tapestry woven with the serene landscapes of Shela and Wiyoni beaches, and the vibrant cultural experiences of Lamu. It was a day of sun-kissed skin, flavorful meals, and the thrill of discovering unique treasures. My heart feels full of gratitude for the simple joys of life and the beauty of my homeland.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Whispers Cafe in Lamu Town. The aroma of freshly brewed Kenyan coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of mandazi. I savored each bite of the Swahili breakfast, feeling a sense of nostalgia wash over me. Jan, ever the early bird, was already snapping photos of the bustling streets, capturing the essence of Lamu's morning energy. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the cool morning breeze before the day's heat set in.

After breakfast, we took a leisurely stroll towards Shela. The walk itself was an experience, passing through narrow alleyways adorned with bougainvillea and the sounds of Swahili greetings echoing from every corner. Shela welcomed us with its pristine white sands and the gentle lapping of turquoise waters. The bohemian vibe of the village was immediately apparent, with art studios and local shops beckoning us to explore.

We spent the morning wandering through Shela, soaking in the artistic atmosphere. I couldn't resist popping into a few shops, admiring the intricate carvings and colorful textiles. Jan found a small dhow carving that he absolutely loved, a perfect memento of our time here. The laid-back atmosphere was infectious, and we found ourselves chatting with local artisans, learning about their craft and the stories behind their creations.

The beauty of Lamu lies not just in its landscapes, but in the warmth and authenticity of its people.

Next on our itinerary was Wiyoni Beach, a serene escape known for its tranquility. We opted for a boat ride from Shela, enjoying the scenic views of the coastline as we glided across the water. Wiyoni was everything we had hoped for – a secluded paradise with soft, golden sands and crystal-clear waters. We spent hours swimming, sunbathing, and simply enjoying the peace and quiet.

The beach was relatively empty, allowing us to truly unwind and connect with nature. Jan, always the adventurous one, went for a snorkeling session, marveling at the vibrant marine life. I chose to relax under the shade of a palm tree, losing myself in a book and listening to the soothing sound of the waves. It was pure bliss.

For lunch, we headed to the Mangrove Restaurant, a local gem known for its Swahili dishes and fresh seafood. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering a delightful culinary experience with a view. We savored grilled fish, seasoned with aromatic spices, and enjoyed the gentle sea breeze as we ate. The flavors of Lamu danced on my tongue, reminding me of the delicious meals I enjoyed as a child.

After lunch, we decided to explore Lamu Town a bit more, with a specific shopping mission in mind. I wanted to find a special bag, something that would remind me of this trip and also be practical for my work back in Amsterdam. That’s when we stumbled upon Lamu Durable Bags Store. It was a small shop, tucked away in a quiet corner, but it was filled with beautiful, handcrafted bags. I was immediately drawn to the kiondo bags, handwoven from sisal by Kamba women in Kenya.

I ended up buying a beautiful sisal bag with leather trimmings. It felt good to support local artisans and to know that I was bringing home a piece of Kenyan culture. Jan, of course, teased me about buying another bag, but he knew how much it meant to me. 'It will be perfect for carrying your laptop and notebooks, Esther,' he said with a smile. 'And it will remind you of Lamu every time you use it.'

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Floating Bar & Restaurant for dinner. The experience of dining on a floating platform in the middle of the ocean was surreal. The views were breathtaking, with the sky ablaze in hues of orange and pink. We enjoyed fresh seafood and tropical cocktails, savoring the last moments of the day. The gentle rocking of the platform and the sound of the waves created a magical ambiance, making it a perfect ending to our coastal adventure.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the simple joys of life. The beauty of Lamu, the warmth of its people, and the delicious flavors of its cuisine have all left an indelible mark on my heart. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel and to share my experiences with all of you.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Waridi Beach on Lamu Mainland, and visit Mtaqkwini and the historic Moyoni House. I’m excited to see what new adventures await us and to continue immersing ourselves in the rich culture and history of Lamu. I am particularly excited about dinner at Shuwari Foods Lamu, where I hope to try some authentic dishes. I’ve heard they make a mean Swahili pilau!

I am also looking forward to seeing Moonrise Restaurant tomorrow night. I understand it is associated with Lamu House Hotel and offers local Swahili dishes and international cuisine. It sounds like the perfect place to wind down and reflect on our day.

Before I drift off to sleep, I must remember to apply some insect repellent. I knew I’d forgotten something! And perhaps tomorrow I’ll find a nice hat for sun protection. Until then, as they say in Swahili, 'Lala salama' – sleep well.

The Baharini Wind Power project, which was supposed to bring so much development to this area of Lamu West, is still a sensitive subject. I heard snippets of conversations today about the stalled project and the disappointment of the local people. I hope that a solution can be found that benefits the community and respects the environment.
