A Day of Discovery in Lamu

Today was a beautiful blend of nature, culture, and relaxation in Lamu. Jan and I ventured out to explore some of the island's hidden gems, creating memories that I know we will cherish for a lifetime. It was a day that truly encapsulated the Lamu Tamu vibe – sweet, slow, and absolutely beautiful.

Our morning started with a delightful breakfast at Mwana Arafa Restaurant Gardens. The restaurant was a serene oasis with lush greenery, creating a peaceful atmosphere. I savored a traditional Kenyan breakfast of mahamri and chai, while Jan opted for a fruit platter with fresh juice. The warm hospitality of the staff made us feel right at home.

After breakfast, we set off to Ras Kitao. The boat ride there was incredibly scenic, offering stunning views of the coastline. Ras Kitao is a tranquil beach on the southwest side of Manda Island. The beach was pristine and quiet, perfect for a morning stroll. We walked hand in hand, enjoying the soft sand between our toes and the gentle sea breeze. I even found some beautiful seashells to add to my collection.

From Ras Kitao, we headed to Kinai Farm, a hidden gem showcasing the region's biodiversity. The farm was a lush paradise with a variety of indigenous plants and flowers. We wandered through the meandering paths, admiring the vibrant colors and fragrant blossoms. It was inspiring to see how the farm promotes sustainable practices and conservation. We learned about different plant species and their uses from a local guide, deepening our connection to the land.

For lunch, we visited Island Dishes, a restaurant known for its authentic Swahili cuisine. The restaurant had a laid-back yet vibrant ambiance, with colorful artwork and traditional crafts. We indulged in a variety of dishes, including grilled fish marinated in zesty spices, coconut rice, and flavorful stews. Each dish was prepared with locally sourced ingredients, ensuring an authentic taste of Lamu. It was a culinary journey that truly immersed us in the local culture.

After our satisfying lunch, we decided to spend the afternoon at Takwa Beach 425. Getting there involved a scenic boat ride followed by a short walk. Takwa Beach was stunning, with pristine white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The beach was surrounded by lush vegetation, providing a picturesque backdrop for relaxation. We swam in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Mararaha Lounge for a relaxing evening. The lounge was located in Shela, known for its enchanting atmosphere. The outdoor setup allowed us to soak in the beautiful surroundings while enjoying our drinks. We sipped on expertly crafted cocktails as we watched the sunset over the Indian Ocean. The ambient lighting created a magical atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a busy day. The experience was enhanced by live music, adding a vibrant touch to our evening.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Lamu's beauty and culture. From the serene beaches to the lush farms and vibrant lounges, Lamu had something for everyone. I was especially touched by the warmth and hospitality of the local people, who made us feel like part of their community.

Tomorrow, Jan and I are planning to explore Shela, Wiyoni Beach and Baharini. I am particularly excited to visit Shela, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant atmosphere. I've also heard great things about Wiyoni Beach, a secluded paradise perfect for relaxation. And I am looking forward to discover Baharini, which I have heard is a hidden gem. Also, I am planning to do some shopping for souvenirs at Lamu Durable Bags Store. I am hoping to find some unique handcrafted items to take back home to Amsterdam.

As I write this, I am filled with anticipation for another day of adventure in Lamu. This trip has been a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with my Kenyan roots and share the beauty of my homeland with Jan. I am grateful for every moment and look forward to creating more lasting memories.

Before drifting off to sleep, I realized that I had forgotten to pack insect repellent and a hat for sun protection. I will definitely make sure to purchase these essentials tomorrow to ensure we are fully prepared for our upcoming adventures. Goodnight from Lamu!
