Exploring the Natural Wonders of Chapada dos Veadeiros
Day 12: Chasing Waterfalls and Local Flavors in Chapada dos Veadeiros
Discover the hidden gems of Chapada dos Veadeiros with me as I explore stunning waterfalls, savor Italian cuisine, and find unique crafts.
A Day of Cascades and Culinary Delights
Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and local culture of Chapada dos Veadeiros. From chasing waterfalls to indulging in Italian cuisine and discovering unique crafts, it was a day filled with unforgettable experiences. It’s amazing how a single day can offer such a rich tapestry of sights, sounds, and tastes.
The day started with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Buritis in São Jorge. This place is known for its amazing buffet where you can create your own pasta dish. I decided to load up on carbs to prepare for a day of hiking. I chose penne pasta with lots of veggies and a creamy pesto sauce. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore! It reminded me of the community meals back in Nyahururu, Kenya, where everyone brings something to share, creating a vibrant and communal dining experience.
Our first stop was Cachoeira do Macacão. Getting there required a bit of an adventure itself, as a 4x4 vehicle is recommended due to the challenging road conditions. Luckily, we had arranged for transportation with a local guide, which is mandatory for visiting the complex. The drive was bumpy but so worth it. The landscape was stunning, with lush vegetation and the promise of hidden waterfalls. The guide told us that the name 'Macacão' refers to the monkeys that are sometimes seen in the area, though we didn't spot any today.

The complex features two main waterfalls: Cachoeira da Escadaria and Cachoeira da Catedral. Cachoeira da Escadaria, with its cascading waters flowing down natural steps, was a sight to behold. We took our time here, enjoying the cool spray and the serene atmosphere. The more imposing Cachoeira da Catedral resembled a natural cathedral of water and rock. The falls were powerful, and the scenery was magnificent. I took some photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the place, but as always, the real experience is so much more impressive than any photograph could convey.
The earth has music for those who listen.
After Macacão, we set off to Cachoeiras do Caracol. This waterfall is known for its unique geological formation, with water cascading through a spiral-shaped rock. It’s a relatively new attraction in Chapada dos Veadeiros, having opened to visitors after the pandemic. The drive there from Alto Paraíso is about 18 km. Getting to the falls involved a bit of a trek, but the unique views were worth it. The waterfall tumbles through a crevice in the rock, creating a misty veil that hides a spiral rock formation behind it. It felt like stepping into another world. I could see why some people describe it as a portal to another dimension. The power and beauty of nature were on full display here.

By this point, we were all starving. Luckily, lunch was at Zu's Bistro, an Italian restaurant in Alto Paraíso de Goiás. After days of Brazilian food, we were all excited for a change of pace. Zu's Bistro is known for its homemade pasta and creative risottos. Jan opted for the lasagna, while I chose a risotto with chicken and pequi, a fruit from the Cerrado region. It was so delicious! The risotto was creamy and flavorful, and it was the perfect comfort food after a long day of hiking. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot to relax and recharge. It reminded me a little bit of some of the Italian restaurants in Amsterdam, where the ambiance is just as important as the food.

After lunch, we decided to explore the local shops in Alto Paraíso. We stopped by ARTESAMUNDO, a store that features local crafts and artwork. I was immediately drawn to the colorful textiles and unique designs. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven wall hanging to bring back home. It’s always nice to support local artisans and find unique pieces that reflect the culture of the place you’re visiting. I also thought about getting some souvenirs for my friends back in Amsterdam, maybe a small woven basket or a piece of local jewelry. I love finding gifts that tell a story and capture the essence of a place.

For dinner, we had reservations at La Parrilla, an Argentinian and Uruguayan restaurant also in Alto Paraíso de Goiás. I had heard great things about their grilled meats, so I was eager to try it out. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with rustic decor that reminded me of a traditional South American parrillada. We started with some empanadas, which were flaky and flavorful. For my main course, I ordered the parrillada platter, a selection of grilled meats that included beef, lamb, and pork. Everything was cooked to perfection, and the flavors were incredible. Jan chose a steak ancho served on homemade potato bread. The meat was tender and juicy, and the bread was soft and flavorful. We also ordered a side of chimichurri sauce, which added a zesty kick to the meal. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Chapada dos Veadeiros. The service was attentive, and the staff were eager to share their recommendations. It felt like a true culinary experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

As the day winds down, I’m already thinking about tomorrow’s adventures. We plan to visit the Enchanted Well Waterfall and Mirante Novo Horizonte, and maybe grab a drink at Barteus. I’m excited to see what other hidden gems Chapada dos Veadeiros has in store for us.
Even though I miss the familiarity of Amsterdam sometimes, especially cycling along the canals, I am also so grateful for these opportunities to experience new cultures and landscapes. It broadens my perspective and reminds me of the beauty and diversity of our world. Plus, sharing these experiences with friends makes it even more special.
