Solo Adventure in the Blue City of Chefchaouen
Day 5: Lost in the Azure Labyrinth: Discovering the Soul of Chefchaouen
Immerse yourself in Chefchaouen's blue-washed streets, explore ancient gates, and savor local flavors in a solo Moroccan adventure.
A Daydream in Blue
Today felt like stepping into a painting, a canvas awash in shades of blue I never knew existed. Chefchaouen, the 'Blue Pearl' of Morocco, has completely captivated me. It’s a place where the visual landscape feels surreal, where every corner turned reveals another breathtaking vista. Today was about letting go and allowing myself to get utterly lost in the beauty of this unique city.
My day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Tissemlal. This charming restaurant, nestled within Casa Hassan, was a delightful introduction to the local cuisine. The ambiance was warm and inviting, filled with traditional Moroccan lanterns and the gentle glow of candles. It felt like stepping back in time, savoring flavors passed down through generations. I enjoyed a traditional tagine, rich with spices and tender vegetables, the perfect fuel for a day of exploration.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I ventured into the heart of the blue medina. It’s impossible to describe the feeling of wandering through these winding alleyways, each building painted in a different hue of blue. Some say the blue represents the sky and heaven, a tradition brought by Jewish refugees seeking solace here centuries ago. Others believe it was to keep mosquitoes away, or simply to keep the houses cool in the warmer months. Whatever the reason, the effect is magical. I found myself constantly stopping to take photos, trying to capture the essence of this extraordinary place. The play of light and shadow on the blue walls created an ever-changing display of color and texture.
The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its visual appeal, but in the way it invites you to slow down, to breathe, and to simply be present in the moment.
One of the highlights of my day was visiting Bab El Ain, one of the main entrances to Chefchaouen's medina. This gate marks the separation between the old city and the new, and it was fascinating to imagine all the people who have passed through it over the centuries. The terracotta-colored stone stood in striking contrast to the surrounding blue, a reminder of the city's rich history and cultural influences. I paused there for a while, watching locals go about their daily lives, children playing, and vendors setting up their stalls.

Lunch was at Restaurant Blue Dream, a small, unassuming place that came highly recommended by a local artisan I met in the market. I opted for a simple but delicious meal of grilled sardines and fresh salad, enjoying the flavors of the sea and the garden. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to sample the authentic Moroccan cuisine. It was a reminder that food is a universal language, a way to connect with people from all walks of life.

After lunch, I spent the afternoon exploring the local crafts market, a vibrant and colorful hub of activity. Here, I found an array of handmade goods, from intricately woven textiles to beautifully carved wooden objects. I was particularly drawn to the Ankara print fabrics, their bold patterns and vibrant colors reminding me of home. I purchased a few pieces to add to my collection, each one a unique reminder of my time in Chefchaouen. The act of bargaining was a fun experience, a dance of negotiation and good humor that I thoroughly enjoyed.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Restaurant Jbaria for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Moroccan dishes and its warm, welcoming atmosphere. I ordered a vegetarian tagine, a slow-cooked stew of vegetables and spices that was both comforting and flavorful. The service was attentive and friendly, and I felt like a valued guest. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

As I reflect on my day, I am struck by the unique charm and beauty of Chefchaouen. It’s a place that has captured my heart and imagination, a place I will never forget. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit the Waterfalls Akchour and El Mellah. I also plan to have breakfast at Chez Foad, lunch at Restaurant Al Wiam, and dinner at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin. I might also check out Café Mundial for a drink. I’m excited to see what new adventures await me in this enchanting blue city.
This trip is especially meaningful as Jan and I had planned to visit Morocco together for so long. Though he couldn't make it this time, I feel his spirit of adventure with me every step of the way. I'm already picturing sharing all these stories with him when I return to Amsterdam, perhaps even recreating some of these dishes in our kitchen.
Chefchaouen, you have truly cast your spell on me! From the vibrant crafts to the calming blue hues, every moment has been a photographer’s dream and a social media manager’s delight. I'm already brainstorming how to capture and share the essence of this magical place with the world, hoping to inspire others to embark on their own Moroccan adventure.
As I settle into my guesthouse, I can't help but feel grateful for this solo journey. It's allowed me to connect with the locals on a deeper level, to wander without a fixed agenda, and to fully immerse myself in the culture of this beautiful country. I'm learning so much about myself and the world around me, and I know that these experiences will stay with me long after I leave Chefchaouen.
One thing I did forget to pack was my guidebook on Moroccan culture. I really need to remember to bring that with me next time!
Until tomorrow,
Esther
