Solo Adventure in the Blue City of Chefchaouen
Day 3: Chasing Waterfalls and Mountain Views: A Day of Exploration in Chefchaouen
Discover the natural beauty of Chefchaouen with a visit to Ras El Ma and a hike to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit, capturing stunning views.
Finding Nature's Wonders in the Blue City
Today was a day of contrasts, trading the labyrinthine blue alleys of Chefchaouen for the refreshing embrace of nature. I ventured out to experience the natural beauty that lies just beyond the city's iconic walls. It was a day filled with the soothing sounds of water, the invigorating challenge of a mountain hike, and the panoramic rewards that come with reaching new heights.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Sindibad. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast of bread, honey, and mint tea. Fuelled and ready, I set off towards Ras El Ma, a spring located at the edge of the medina. The walk there was a sensory delight, with the sounds of the city slowly fading as I approached the source of the water. Ras El Ma, which translates to Head of the Water in Arabic, is where fresh mountain water flows into the town. It's a communal gathering spot where locals come to wash clothes and socialize. The sound of the water gushing out of the mountain was incredibly refreshing, a stark contrast to the bustling market streets I had grown accustomed to.

The area around Ras El Ma was vibrant with activity. Women were washing fabrics in the cool stream, their laughter echoing through the air. Children played by the water's edge, and the atmosphere was filled with a sense of community and connection. I watched as they spread the fabrics out to dry, creating a colorful display against the backdrop of the blue city. It was a beautiful scene, a reminder of the simple joys of life and the importance of water in this region. I took a moment to reflect on how this spring has been the cornerstone of Chefchaouen, providing drinking water and energy for water mills for centuries.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the simple, everyday moments that connect us to the earth and each other.
After soaking in the atmosphere at Ras El Ma, I decided to embark on a more ambitious adventure: hiking to the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa. This mountain looms over Chefchaouen, and the promise of panoramic views was too enticing to resist. I made sure I was well-prepared, filling my reusable water bottle and grabbing a quick snack from a local vendor before heading towards the trailhead. I had forgotten my portable phone charger, but I was determined to make the most of the day.

The initial part of the hike was a gentle incline, gradually increasing in steepness as I ascended. The trails were well-marked, making it easy to navigate. As I climbed higher, the views of Chefchaouen became increasingly breathtaking. The blue-washed buildings looked like a surreal painting, nestled against the rugged landscape of the Rif Mountains. The air was crisp and clean, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the occasional call of a bird. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The final ascent to the summit was challenging, but the panoramic views made it all worthwhile. From the top, I could see the entire city of Chefchaouen spread out below me, a sea of blue against the backdrop of the mountains. The Rif Mountains stretched out in all directions, their peaks shrouded in a light mist. I took some time to capture the views with my camera, trying to encapsulate the beauty of the moment. I also took a moment to appreciate the local vegetation, which added to the serenity of the experience. I felt a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for being able to witness such natural beauty.
As I began my descent, I opted for an alternate path, which offered new perspectives of the region. The trail wound through a forest of pine trees, providing shade and a different kind of beauty. I encountered a few locals along the way, who greeted me with warm smiles and offered words of encouragement. Their friendliness and hospitality made the experience even more special. It reminded me of the close-knit community I grew up in back in Nyahururu.
By the time I made it back to Chefchaouen, I was exhausted but exhilarated. I had worked up quite an appetite, so I decided to treat myself to a late lunch at Restaurant Triana. I had heard they offer vegan options, so I was eager to try their mushroom casserole. The restaurant had a lovely terrace with views of the Rif Mountains, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. The mushroom casserole was delicious, a hearty and flavorful dish that was the perfect reward after a long hike. I paired it with a refreshing mint tea, savoring the flavors and the stunning views.

After lunch, I strolled through the medina, making my way to Chaouen Gifts. I wanted to find a unique souvenir to remind me of my time in Chefchaouen. The shop was filled with a colorful array of handcrafted items, from textiles to pottery to jewelry. I spent some time browsing, admiring the intricate designs and the craftsmanship of the local artisans. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven Ankara print scarf, a perfect reminder of my heritage and my travels. The staff were incredibly friendly and shared the history and significance of the items on display.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Restaurant Terrasse Djebli for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Moroccan dishes and its breathtaking views of the Rif Mountains. I ordered a tagine, a classic Moroccan stew, and settled in to enjoy the sunset. The colors of the sky were incredible, painting the mountains in hues of orange, pink, and purple. The tagine was delicious, a flavorful and comforting dish that warmed me from the inside out. The staff were attentive and made sure I had everything I needed.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had experienced in such a short time. I had also connected with the local culture, from the women washing clothes at the spring to the friendly artisans at Chaouen Gifts. It was a day that reminded me of the importance of exploration, connection, and gratitude.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the viewpoint and Parc National de Talassemtane, eager to uncover more of Chefchaouen's hidden gems. I might even stop by Bar Oum Rabie for a drink in the evening, embracing the slower pace of life here.
