Day 5: A Spiritual Day Trip: Braga's Sacred Sites
Discover Braga's spiritual heart with Farida and Jan as they explore cathedrals, sanctuaries, and decorative arts in Northern Portugal.
A Day of Devotion and Discovery
Today, Jan and I embarked on a day trip from Ponte de Lima to the historic city of Braga, a journey filled with spiritual reflection and artistic appreciation. I was particularly excited to delve into the religious heritage of the region, a stark contrast to the more secular landscapes I've grown accustomed to in Delft. As a cultural liaison, I find immense value in understanding the diverse expressions of faith and art across different societies.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Maria Rosa in Ponte de Lima. I enjoyed a strong café com leite and a pastel de nata, while Jan opted for a more traditional Dutch-style bread with cheese. Fuelled for the day, we set off towards Braga, eager to explore its famed religious landmarks. I made sure to pack my camera; I wanted to capture every detail of Braga's stunning architecture. I also brought the phrasebook I had forgotten earlier in the trip, determined to practice my Portuguese with the locals.
Our first stop was the Museu de Artes Decorativas in Ponte de Lima, a small but delightful museum. While not as grand as some of the museums I've visited in larger cities, it offered a charming glimpse into the local artistry and craftsmanship. The intricate details in the furniture and ceramics were truly impressive. It reminded me of some of the traditional crafts back in Ha'il, where attention to detail and preserving cultural heritage are highly valued. I picked up a small, hand-painted tile as a memento, a reminder of the delicate beauty found in this corner of Portugal.

To truly understand a culture, one must immerse oneself in its art, history, and spiritual traditions.
Next on our itinerary was the Santa Maria de Braga Cathedral, also known as the Sé de Braga, a cornerstone of Portuguese religious history. As the oldest cathedral in Portugal, dating back to the 11th century, it's a place that radiates centuries of history. Jan, with his engineering mind, was fascinated by the mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles evident in its architecture. I was particularly moved by the Chapel of Kings, the final resting place of D. Henrique and D. Teresa, the parents of the first king of Portugal. Standing there, I felt a profound connection to the nation's origins, a sense of how deeply intertwined faith and history are in shaping a country's identity.

We took our time wandering through the cathedral's many chapels, each a testament to different eras and artistic influences. The detailed altarpieces, intricate woodwork, and the sheer grandeur of the space were awe-inspiring. I learned that the cathedral houses a museum where one can see the cross used in the first mass celebrated in Brazil. The weight of history was palpable, and I couldn't help but reflect on the global reach of Portuguese culture and faith.
For lunch, we decided to try Restaurante A Cozinha Velha back in Ponte de Lima. The restaurant is known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine, and we were eager to sample some local flavors. Jan ordered the roasted kid (cabrito assado), while I opted for the sea food salad. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic atmosphere, complete with a crackling fireplace, which added to the charm. It reminded me of the warm hospitality I experienced during my childhood in Ha'il, where family meals were always a cherished occasion.

After lunch, we drove back to Braga to visit Bom Jesus do Monte, a sanctuary perched atop a hill overlooking the city. The sanctuary is famous for its monumental Baroque staircase, a stunning 573-step Via Crucis that zigzags up the mountain. We decided to take the funicular, Elevador do Bom Jesus, which, I discovered, is the oldest water-balanced funicular still operating in the world. The ride itself was a unique experience, a testament to 19th-century engineering ingenuity.

Reaching the top, we were greeted by breathtaking views of Braga and the surrounding landscape. The church at the summit, with its neoclassical design, provided a serene space for reflection. I learned that the design of Bom Jesus do Monte has influenced other sites in Portugal and Brazil, reflecting its cultural and religious significance. As we explored the area, we found octagonal chapels with statues depicting scenes after the Crucifixion and Baroque fountains with statues of the Evangelists. The entire complex was a harmonious blend of art, faith, and nature.
Before heading back to Ponte de Lima, we stopped by OldStar, a gift shop in Ponte de Lima known for its local crafts and souvenirs. I was looking for a special keepsake to remind me of our time in Ponte de Lima. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic tile depicting the Ponte de Lima bridge, a perfect memento of our stay. Jan picked up a bottle of local Vinho Verde to enjoy back at our homestay.

For dinner, we chose Restaurante a Tulha in Ponte de Lima, drawn in by its reputation for great service and traditional dishes. The quiet ambiance and cute decor made it a perfect spot to unwind after a busy day. I enjoyed a perfectly grilled sea bass, while Jan savored a hearty portion of arroz de sarrabulho, a traditional Minho rice dish. The friendly staff made us feel incredibly welcome, adding a personal touch to our dining experience.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the richness of our experiences. From the spiritual heights of Bom Jesus do Monte to the artistic treasures of Braga Cathedral and the Museu de Artes Decorativas, each moment offered a deeper understanding of Portuguese culture and history. I found myself contemplating the similarities between the architecture of the cathedral and the intricate designs I’ve seen in mosques back home, realizing that different faiths often express themselves through similar artistic forms.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Granaries of Soajo and the Castle of Lindoso, venturing further into the natural beauty and historical landmarks of the region. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the granaries, as they represent a unique aspect of Portuguese agricultural heritage. It will be another day of discovery, and I am excited to share it with you all.
Back at our homestay, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a culturally rich and historically significant region. It reinforced my belief in the power of travel to broaden our perspectives and deepen our appreciation for the diverse tapestry of human experience. I hope that my journey inspires you to embark on your own adventures, seeking out the hidden gems and spiritual sanctuaries that await discovery.
