Adieu, Ponte de Lima!

As our cultural journey through Ponte de Lima draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the tapestry of experiences we've woven during our stay. Today, our final day, was a blend of historical exploration, serene nature, and the simple joys of local life. Ponte de Lima, you've captured a piece of our hearts, and we'll carry your spirit with us as we journey back home to Delft.

The day began with a delightful breakfast at Maria Rosa | Restaurante | Breakfast, Lunch & Brunch. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air as Jan and I discussed our plans for the day. Maria Rosa offered a vibrant start to our morning, setting the tone for a day of exploration and reflection. I opted for the Shakshuka, while Jan enjoyed the Ovos Benedict; a perfect blend of local flavors and familiar comfort.

Our first destination was the Solar de Bertiandos, a manor house with a history stretching back to the 15th century. As we approached, the grandeur of the estate unfolded before us. The Solar de Bertiandos isn't just a building; it's a chronicle of centuries, a silent witness to the ebb and flow of generations. Although the interior was closed to the public, we were able to admire the architecture from the outside, learning about its evolution from a 15th-century estate to the stunning Baroque structure it is today.

The original house-tower was built in 1566 by Inês Pinto, and the estate was divided between her two sons in the same century. The inheritors of the western section built a manor house next to the tower at the start of the 18th century. Later, the inheritors of the western section decided to do the same, which resulted in a complex made up of two independent Baroque manor houses connected by the house-tower in the middle. The family reunited through marriage in 1792. The intricate details of the façade, the imposing tower, and the serene chapel transported us back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of the families who once called this place home.

Travel is not about the destination, but the collection of moments and memories created along the way.

Next on our itinerary was the Centro de Interpretação do Território de Ponte de Lima. This museum space extends beyond its walls, inviting visitors to explore the region and experience the daily lives of the local people. It was here that we delved deeper into the traditions and customs that define Ponte de Lima. The center showcases the intangible heritage of the region, from ancient agricultural practices to the art of bread-making and wine production. We learned about the cultivation of the land, the craftsmanship involved in linen production, and the significance of cattle in the local economy. It was a fascinating insight into the soul of Ponte de Lima, reinforcing my belief in the importance of preserving cultural heritage.

After immersing ourselves in the local culture, we strolled along the Avenida dos Plátanos. This avenue, lined with plane trees planted in 1901, offers a tranquil pedestrian zone, providing shade and a picturesque view of the Lima River. The leaves were turning golden brown, creating a beautiful contrast against the blue sky. We walked hand in hand, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and reflecting on our time in Ponte de Lima. The avenue connects to the Ponte de Lima-Viana do Castelo hiking route and offers views of the Lima River and the surrounding green hills.

For lunch, we chose Restaurante Diamante Azul, known for its regional cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant was spacious, making it ideal for groups, and the service was both professional and attentive. We decided to try some of their specialties. Jan ordered the Arroz de Sarrabulho, a traditional rice dish, while I opted for the Filet Mignon. Both dishes were delicious, offering a true taste of the region.

In the afternoon, I took some time to visit Lovely2Care, a local shop. I was looking for a few souvenirs to take back home to Delft, something that would remind us of our time here. I found a beautiful hand-painted tile depicting the Ponte de Lima bridge, as well as some locally made soaps infused with the scent of Portuguese lavender. These little treasures will serve as a reminder of the beauty and tranquility of Ponte de Lima.

As the day drew to a close, we had our final dinner at Restaurante A Torre. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and we were looking forward to a relaxing evening. We shared a bottle of local Vinho Verde, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the past eleven days. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. For our main courses, Jan chose the Bacalhau, while I savored the Arroz. The meal was a perfect ending to our culinary journey through Ponte de Lima.

Tomorrow, we will be heading back to Porto to catch our flight to Amsterdam. While I am looking forward to returning to our cozy home in Delft, I know that I will miss the charm and tranquility of Ponte de Lima. This cultural journey has enriched our lives in so many ways, deepening our understanding of Portuguese history, traditions, and the warmth of its people. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this beautiful corner of the world with my beloved Jan.

As I reflect on our time in Ponte de Lima, I am reminded of the importance of slowing down, embracing new experiences, and connecting with the local culture. It is through these interactions that we truly grow and expand our horizons. Ponte de Lima, thank you for the memories. Until we meet again!

P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to find a lovely little gift for Layla at Lovely2Care. It's a delicate silver filigree brooch, a traditional Portuguese craft. I think she'll love it!

And to answer a question I received on the blog – yes, I did miss my Dutch garden and my intercultural dinners, but I'm already planning a Portuguese-themed dinner party to share our experiences with our friends in Delft! Perhaps I'll even try to recreate the Arroz de Sarrabulho!

Safe travels, everyone!
