Cultural Journey through Ponte de Lima
Day 10: A Sunday Stroll Through History and Faith in Ponte de Lima
Discover Ponte de Lima's cultural treasures: from sacred art at Museu dos Terceiros to the spiritual Caminho Português de Santiago.
Reflections on Sacred Spaces and Ancient Paths
Today in Ponte de Lima, Jan and I embarked on a journey that intertwined the tangible beauty of art with the intangible essence of faith. It was a day of serene exploration, where we delved into the historical depths of this charming town and reflected on the paths trodden by pilgrims for centuries. The experiences we had today were a beautiful reminder of how travel can nourish both the mind and the spirit.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Maria Rosa | Restaurante | Breakfast, Lunch & Brunch. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a hearty meal. I opted for the Shakshuka, while Jan enjoyed the Ovos Benedict. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

Our first stop was the Museu dos Terceiros. Housed within the historic Church of Santo António dos Frades and the Church of the Third Order of São Francisco, the museum is a treasure trove of sacred art. As a Cultural Liaison, I always find myself drawn to places where art and history converge, and this museum was no exception.

The Museu dos Terceiros emerged in the 1970s after restoration work in the Matriz de Ponte de Lima revealed a lack of space for the valuable collection of sacred art. The museum is home to paintings, sculptures, and religious artifacts that narrate the rich spiritual history of the region. We wandered through the halls, admiring the intricate details of each piece and pondering the stories they held.
I was particularly moved by a series of 17th-century paintings depicting the life of Saint Francis. The artist's use of light and shadow was masterful, and the expressions on the faces of the figures were incredibly lifelike. Jan, with his engineering mind, was fascinated by the architectural details of the buildings themselves, marveling at the craftsmanship of the artisans who had built them centuries ago.
Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible.
After the museum, we decided to walk a portion of the Caminho Português de Santiago. Ponte de Lima has been an important point on this pilgrimage route since the Middle Ages. As we walked, we passed several churches and chapels dedicated to Saint James. The path was well-marked with the iconic yellow arrows, and we fell into step with other pilgrims, exchanging smiles and words of encouragement.

I found myself reflecting on the countless people who had walked this same path over the centuries, each with their own hopes, dreams, and fears. It was a humbling experience, and I felt a deep sense of connection to something larger than myself. Jan, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the logistics of the journey, wondering about the supplies the pilgrims would have carried and the challenges they would have faced.
Our walk on the Caminho Português de Santiago led us to lunch at Restaurante Paladares do Bispo. This restaurant is known for its high-quality, traditional food at reasonable prices. We both opted for the executive lunch menu, which included generous portions of delicious Portuguese cuisine. I chose the grilled pork loins, while Jan had the codfish with cornbread. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was pleasant, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing midday meal.

As we savored our lunch, we chatted about our daughter, Layla, and her latest endeavors in sustainable architecture. It’s hard to believe she’s already 28! I am so proud of the woman she has become. She is constantly inspiring me to be more mindful of the environment and to live a more sustainable lifestyle. I am trying to implement some of her ideas into our home in Delft, but Jan is sometimes resistant to change.
In the late afternoon, we experienced the vibrant atmosphere of Feiras Novas. Although the main festivities occurred earlier in September, echoes of the celebration lingered, adding a touch of festivity to the air. The Feiras Novas are one of the largest festivals in the Minho region, celebrating Nossa Senhora das Dores with parades, concerts, and traditional dances. Even though the festival was officially over, the town was still buzzing with excitement, and we enjoyed soaking up the lively atmosphere.

Before dinner, we stopped by One Lounge Bar for a drink. This vibrant spot is known for its friendly atmosphere and eclectic decor. I had a glass of local Vinho Verde, while Jan enjoyed a Super Bock beer. The bar was bustling with locals and tourists, and we struck up a conversation with a friendly couple from Porto who were visiting Ponte de Lima for the weekend.

For dinner, we chose Taberna Cadeia Velha. This cozy restaurant is located near the Torre da Cadeia and offers a beautiful view of the Lima River. We shared several tapas, including the spinach croquettes and the red curry. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Ponte de Lima.

As we walked back to our homestay, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Ponte de Lima had truly captured our hearts, and I was already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. We plan to visit Solar de Bertiandos, Centro de Interpretação do Território de Ponte de Lima and Avenida dos Platanos. I am particularly excited about visiting Solar de Bertiandos, as I have heard it is a beautiful example of traditional Portuguese architecture. Jan is looking forward to visiting Centro de Interpretação do Território de Ponte de Lima, as he is interested in learning more about the history and culture of the region. And of course, we will be sure to take a stroll down Avenida dos Platanos, which I am told is one of the most beautiful streets in Ponte de Lima.
Tonight, as I reflect on our day, I am reminded of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. Whether it's admiring a work of art, walking a historic path, or sharing a meal with loved ones, these are the moments that truly matter. And as we continue our journey through Portugal, I am excited to discover even more hidden gems and create even more lasting memories.
Until tomorrow,
