Embracing Portugal's Wild Side

Today, Jan and I ventured into the heart of Portugal’s natural beauty, a world away from the charming streets of Ponte de Lima. We traded cobblestones for winding mountain roads and historic architecture for the raw, untamed landscapes of Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês. It was a day filled with breathtaking vistas, the soothing sounds of cascading water, and a deep connection with nature that reminded me of the vast deserts of my homeland, though cloaked in vibrant green.

Our day began, as most do here, with a delightful breakfast at Maria Rosa | Restaurante | Breakfast, Lunch & Brunch. I opted for the shakshuka, a nod to my Middle Eastern roots, while Jan enjoyed a traditional Portuguese pastry. The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere set the perfect tone for our adventure.

Fueled and ready, we set off towards the park. The drive itself was a treat, with the scenery transforming from rolling hills to rugged mountains. As we approached the park, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. I've always found solace in nature, and the promise of exploring Portugal's only national park was incredibly exciting.

Our first stop was the famed Miradouro da Pedra Bela. The drive up was a bit winding, but oh, was it worth it! Emerging from the car, we were greeted by a panoramic view that stretched as far as the eye could see. The vastness of the park unfolded before us, a tapestry of green valleys, rocky peaks, and shimmering lakes. Jan, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the landscape's geological formations, while I simply stood in awe, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. The crisp air and the quiet hum of nature were a welcome change from the bustling city life we usually lead in Delft. I could almost imagine the sweeping dunes of Ha'il, though these were replaced by lush vegetation.

Nature's beauty is a gift that reminds us of the simple joys in life, a sentiment I carried with me throughout our exploration of Peneda-Gerês.

Next on our itinerary was the Cascata do Arado, a waterfall nestled deep within the park. The drive to the waterfall was an adventure in itself, with narrow, winding roads that tested Jan's driving skills. The last stretch was a bit bumpy, along an unpaved road, but we managed it without any trouble. We parked near the bridge over the Arado River and took the short, stepped path to the miradouro.

The Cascata do Arado was truly a sight to behold. The water cascaded down the rocks, creating a mesmerizing display of power and beauty. The sound of the waterfall was incredibly soothing, and I found myself lost in the moment, simply watching the water flow. While swimming is not recommended, or even sanctioned anymore due to safety concerns, the view from the top was more than enough.

After taking in the stunning views of the Cascata do Arado, our stomachs started to rumble, signaling it was time for lunch. We drove to Restaurante Diamante Azul, where we enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Portuguese cuisine. Jan opted for the arroz de sarrabulho, a hearty rice dish with meat, while I chose the filet mignon. The food was excellent, and the service was friendly and efficient.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Laurindinha (Creative Gift Shop) back in Ponte de Lima. This charming shop, run by Telma, a mother and art teacher, offers a delightful array of handcrafted gifts and eco-friendly items. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted tile as a souvenir, while Jan found a unique wooden toy for our granddaughter, Layla. It's always a pleasure to support local artisans and find unique treasures that reflect the character of the place we're visiting.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Ponte de Lima, feeling tired but incredibly fulfilled. For dinner, we chose Restaurante A Torre, known for its traditional Portuguese dishes and cozy atmosphere. We shared a plate of arroz de cabrito, a flavorful goat rice dish, and reminisced about our day in the park. The friendly staff and the warm ambiance made it a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Our excursion into Peneda-Gerês was more than just a day trip; it was an immersion into the soul of Portugal. The park's raw beauty reminded me of the importance of preserving our natural heritage, a cause close to my heart. It was also a reminder of the simple joys in life – the beauty of nature, the pleasure of good food, and the joy of sharing experiences with loved ones.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Ponte de Lima's cultural side, visiting the Museu dos Terceiros and walking the Caminho Português de Santiago. I am also keen to experience the Feiras Novas Ponte de Lima. But for tonight, I'll drift off to sleep with the sound of waterfalls in my ears and the scent of pine in my nostrils.

I am truly grateful for this journey with Jan, and I am excited to share more of our adventures with you all. Until next time, may your travels be filled with wonder and discovery!
