A Day of Serene Discovery
Today was a day of embracing the quiet beauty of Jordan, a stark contrast to the bustling cities I've explored in the past. It was a day to connect with nature, delve into local culture, and simply breathe in the tranquility that this region offers. As a cultural liaison, I often find myself amidst the vibrant chaos of international gatherings, so these moments of solitude and reflection are especially precious.
My day began, as always, with a delightful breakfast at Feynan Ecolodge. The simplicity of the food here is quite remarkable; fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared with care. It’s a gentle reminder of the beauty in unpretentious living. After breakfast, I set out to explore the renowned Dana Biosphere Reserve.

The morning was dedicated to immersing myself in the natural wonders of the Dana Biosphere Reserve. I decided to take a guided hike, eager to learn more about the unique flora and fauna of this protected area. The reserve, I discovered, is a tapestry of diverse ecosystems, from rugged mountains to sweeping desert plains. Our guide, a local Bedouin, shared stories of the land and its inhabitants, pointing out rare birds and explaining the traditional uses of various plants. It was fascinating to learn about the efforts to preserve this natural heritage, a cause that resonates deeply with my own passion for cultural preservation.
We passed by Mawasem Dhana, a local community project, adding another layer of understanding to the region. Seeing firsthand how the local community benefits from tourism and conservation efforts was truly inspiring. It reminded me of the importance of sustainable practices, something I always strive to promote in my work with the NGO.

The desert is a silent teacher, offering lessons in resilience, adaptation, and the profound beauty of simplicity.
The sun was high as we completed our hike, and I returned to the lodge for a simple but satisfying lunch. The heat here in August is intense, but the lodge offers a cool respite, a welcome oasis in the arid landscape. I spent the afternoon reading in one of the shaded courtyards, reflecting on the morning's experiences. I made sure to rehydrate consistently, remembering my reusable water bottle, which I was encouraged to bring. I am still kicking myself for forgetting my power adapter, but I am making do charging my devices at the communal solar-charged sockets in reception.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself drawn to The Cave Bar. Intrigued by its unique setting, I ventured in for a pre-dinner drink. Carved into the rock, the bar exuded a cool, mysterious ambiance. It was a perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I enjoyed a refreshing local beverage, savoring the quiet atmosphere and the sense of history that permeated the space.

Dinner back at the Feynan Ecolodge was another communal affair, shared with fellow travelers from around the globe. We exchanged stories and insights, forging connections that transcended cultural boundaries. The food, as always, was simple, delicious, and reflective of the local cuisine.
Before retiring for the night, I ventured up to the rooftop terrace for some stargazing. The remote location of Feynan Ecolodge offers an unparalleled view of the night sky, far from the light pollution of urban areas. The stars seemed brighter here, more numerous, a celestial tapestry woven across the darkness. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the vastness of the universe and our small place within it.
Tomorrow, I am planning to visit Wadi Al Ghwer Camp and Mt. Nebo. I am looking forward to more hiking and exploring the area. I am trying to decide whether to purchase some local crafts at Punon Archaeological Site, but I am still undecided.
As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this day of tranquility and discovery. It was a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature, embracing local culture, and finding moments of peace amidst the chaos of modern life. I am so appreciative that Jan encouraged me to take this trip, and I can't wait to share my experiences with him when I return to Delft. Perhaps I’ll even try to recreate some of the delicious Jordanian dishes I’ve been enjoying here. I am also excited to share my experiences with my daughter, Layla, who I know will be fascinated by the sustainable practices of the Feynan Ecolodge. It aligns perfectly with her interest in environmental conservation, and I know she would love to visit someday. Tonight, however, I am grateful for the quiet solitude and the gentle rhythm of the desert night.
The Feynan Ecolodge and the Dana Biosphere Reserve have truly captured my heart. The commitment to sustainability, the connection to the local community, and the sheer natural beauty of the landscape create an experience that is both enriching and transformative. It is a place where one can truly disconnect from the world and reconnect with oneself, a rare and precious gift in our modern age.
