Echoes of the Past in Takayama

Today, Hans and I journeyed deeper into Japan's captivating history, exploring the well-preserved historical sites of Takayama Jinya. It was a day filled with cultural immersion, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped this region. The echoes of the past resonated in every corner we turned, from the solemn halls of Takayama Jinya to the elegant rooms of Yoshijima House.

Our day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Hakusuien. The charming restaurant was built in the gassho style, and it served simple, warm regional cuisine made with local ingredients. I enjoyed a set meal of assorted traditional Japanese dishes. I particularly enjoyed the Hida beef, which was tender and flavorful. After breakfast, we made our way to Takayama Jinya, the former government house.

Takayama Jinya, once the administrative heart of the Hida region during the Edo period, now stands as a museum. As I stepped through its gates, I felt as though I was transported back in time. The meticulously preserved tatami rooms whispered stories of officials who once governed this land. Hans and I removed our shoes and walked through the immense building. The rooms were mostly empty, but there were artifacts from the Edo Period scattered about.

The intricate details of the architecture spoke volumes about the craftsmanship of the era. The front room's sliding doors and alcove were decorated with a blue wave pattern. The courtroom, where justice was dispensed, sent chills down my spine as I imagined the weight of decisions made within those walls. We explored the rice storage area, which featured displays and information about local government operations during the Edo era. The staff were helpful and engaging, and they answered all of our questions about the building's history.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Leaving Takayama Jinya, we strolled through the streets of Takayama, soaking in the atmosphere of this enchanting town. The air was filled with the scent of wood and the sound of running water, creating a serene ambiance. It reminded me of Bamyan, of the simple life I had before I came to Germany. We stopped at the Kodaijin Souvenir Store, a delightful shop filled with local crafts and treasures. I picked up a few small gifts for Leila, hoping to share a piece of Japanese culture with her. It's important to me that she understands her roots, even as she grows up so far away from Afghanistan.

For lunch, we savored the flavors of Soba dojo Restaurant. This charming soba noodle shop is located in the heart of Shirakawa-go. The soba noodles were freshly made using high-quality buckwheat flour sourced from local farms. Each bowl was a testament to the meticulous preparation and culinary artistry that goes into creating this beloved dish. Hans particularly enjoyed the hot noodle soups brimming with seasonal ingredients. I opted for the cold dipping noodles served with savory dipping sauce.

In the afternoon, we visited the Yoshijima Traditional House, a beautifully preserved sake brewery and residence. This architectural gem offered a glimpse into the lifestyle of a wealthy merchant family during the Meiji era. The Yoshijima family was a well-known brewer of sake in Takayama and was also engaged in money lending. Built in 1907, the house is a prime example of Takayama's traditional town house architecture. As we entered, we noticed the sakabayashi, the cedar ball typically hung at the nihonshu maker's front door.

The house was constructed with luxuriant wood, including elm, red pine, and cypress. The large entryway and adjacent rooms served as the shop entrance and places where business was conducted. The semitransparent shoji sliding doors allowed for gentle filtration of light throughout the rooms. The second floor housed a tea ceremony room and a Buddhist altar. It was fascinating to see how the family integrated their work and personal lives within the same space.

The craftsmanship of the Yoshijima House was truly remarkable. The builders used luxuriant wood including elm, red pine and cypress. The stairwell, constructed from beams and posts with a main pillar in the center, allowed light to filter into the house from the windows. The variety of openings, trellis windows, fusuma sliding doors and shoji dividers, letting the natural light in provide soothing views on the outdoors and the seasons.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the beauty and tranquility of Takayama. This town has a unique way of preserving its history while embracing the present. It's a reminder that the past is always with us, shaping who we are and how we see the world. As someone who has had to leave her own history behind, I find great comfort in seeing how other cultures honor their heritage. For dinner, we plan to try Hidaji. Maybe we'll even find a little sake to bring back to our room.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the natural side of Shirakawa-go with visits to Nature Forest and Water Lily Pond. I'm looking forward to trading the echoes of history for the sounds of nature, and to sharing those experiences with you all.

I noticed that I forgot to pack a portable charger and an umbrella. I will have to remember to buy those tomorrow.

Takayama is also celebrating the Tanabata Festival and the Summer Festivals. The Hida Takayama Tezutsu Fireworks festival happens annually on August 9. Approximately 2,000 wind bells and fresh flowers are floated in a traditional Shinto water basin, creating a summer colorful atmosphere.
