Whispers of the Past in Hoi An's Embrace

Today, Hoi An revealed more of its captivating charm. From the iconic Hoi An Yellow Wall that whisper stories of centuries past to the intricate architecture of the Old House of Tan Ky, every corner of this ancient town offered a new perspective on its rich cultural heritage. It was a day of exploration, delicious discoveries, and heartfelt moments with Hans and Leila, making memories that I know we will cherish long after we return to Potsdam.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant & Cafe Tuấn Rich Flavor of Hoi An Vietnamese Familly Restaurant. It was a cozy spot, filled with the aroma of Vietnamese coffee and the promise of a delicious start to our explorations. While Hans opted for a hearty bowl of pho, Leila was excited to try the Italian pizza. I enjoyed a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, savoring the fresh herbs and flavorful broth. It's these small moments of culinary discovery that truly enrich our travel experiences.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was the famed Hoi An Yellow Wall. The walls weren't just a backdrop; they were a canvas telling tales of history and culture. The yellow hue, I learned, symbolizes prosperity and good fortune in Vietnamese culture. As we strolled along the streets, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the generations who had walked these same paths before us. The November weather was kind to us, with mild temperatures and gentle breezes making our walk even more enjoyable. I made sure Leila had her light jacket as the mornings can be a bit cooler.

The beauty of Hoi An lies not just in its historical sites, but in the way its past seamlessly blends with the present, creating a living, breathing tapestry of culture and tradition.

Next, we ventured into the Old House of Tan Ky. This ancient house, built in 1741, is a remarkable example of the architectural fusion of Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese styles. As we stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the intricate woodwork and the sense of history that permeated every room. The house has been home to seven generations of the Le family, and it felt like we were stepping back in time as we explored its chambers. Leila was fascinated by the stories our guide shared, especially the tale of Mr. Le Cong, a Chinese-born merchant who made his fortune trading agricultural products. Hans, ever the engineer, was impressed by the construction techniques, noting that the house was built without using a single nail.

For lunch, we sought out SECRET GARDEN HOIAN, a restaurant recommended to me by a fellow travel blogger. Tucked away in a little laneway, it truly felt like a hidden gem. The restaurant was an oasis of calm, with lush greenery and a tranquil atmosphere. The food was exquisite, a delightful mix of traditional Vietnamese dishes and Western flavors. We savored the fresh spring rolls and the flavorful *cao lầu*, a local specialty. Leila particularly enjoyed the coconut coffee, a sweet and refreshing treat.

After lunch, while Hans took Leila back to the hotel for a swim in the indoor pool, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Lotus Leaf Fine Arts & Jewellery. I had read about this family-run business that not only creates beautiful jewelry but also employs people with disabilities. I was touched by their commitment to social responsibility and eager to support their work. I ended up commissioning a custom-made ring, choosing a design that incorporated elements of traditional Afghan jewelry, a nod to my heritage. It was a truly special experience, and I look forward to wearing my new ring as a reminder of my time in Hoi An.

As evening approached, we gathered again for dinner at Đào Tiên Restaurant. This restaurant, located in a charming old French colonial house, is known for its refined Vietnamese specialties and its commitment to training disadvantaged youth. The atmosphere was elegant and inviting, and the food was simply divine. We savored the white rose dumplings, a local delicacy made with rice paper and shrimp, and the grilled fish in banana leaf, a dish bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, with the staff dressed in traditional *áo dài*, adding to the restaurant's charm.

As we walked back to the hotel, the streets of Hoi An were aglow with the soft light of lanterns. Although the Lantern Festival isn't until next week, the town was already adorned with colorful lanterns, creating a magical ambiance. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a day filled with cultural immersion, culinary delights, and cherished family moments.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the natural beauty surrounding Hoi An with a Hoi An Ecotour and a cycling trip through the rice fields. Hans is especially excited about the Hoi An Rice Fields-Cycling&Sunset tour, and Leila is already asking if we can stop for a cocktail at KoFi Hoi An - Cocktail bar. I'm looking forward to experiencing a different side of Hoi An, away from the bustling streets of the ancient town. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, memories that will forever be etched in my heart.

The rain ponchos we forgot to pack would have been useful, as November is known to have occasional showers. Luckily, the weather held up, but I'll be sure to purchase some tomorrow before our ecotour.

For those planning a trip to Hoi An in November, I would recommend packing light layers, including a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings, and an umbrella or raincoat for unexpected showers. And be sure to bring your camera to capture the beauty of this enchanting town.
