Echoes of the Past in Hoi An

Today was a day of delving deeper into the heart of Hoi An, a town that seems to whisper stories from centuries past. With Hans and Leila by my side, I set out to explore more of the ancient architecture and immerse ourselves in the local culture. It's incredible how well-preserved this town is, a true testament to its rich history and the people who have called it home for generations.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Hoi An Riverside Restaurant. The restaurant's location offered a beautiful view of the Thu Bon River, providing a serene start to our explorations. It was the perfect setting to enjoy traditional Vietnamese dishes, setting the tone for a day steeped in local culture. The fresh air and gentle sounds of the river made it a truly memorable experience. I always appreciate starting the day with a meal that connects us to the local environment; it feels like a warm welcome from the town itself.

Our first stop was the Diep Dong Nguyen House. Stepping inside felt like entering a time capsule. This ancient house, owned by a family with roots in Canton, China, is filled with antiques and historical artifacts. Leila was especially fascinated by the collection of old coins and ceramics. The house itself is a marvel, built in the late 19th century, and it served as a traditional medicine shop. The architecture, with its wooden facade and absence of windows, is a unique feature that I found particularly intriguing. It's amazing how the Diep family has preserved their heritage, allowing visitors like us to glimpse into the past.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that take us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the enduring spirit of a place and its people.

Next on our itinerary was the Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel. Tucked away in a quiet alley, this ancestral temple is a tribute to the Nguyen Tuong family, known for their contributions to Vietnamese literature and their high-ranking positions in the government. The chapel houses a collection of documents dating back to the 18th and 20th centuries, offering insights into the family's history. The intricate wood carvings and serene atmosphere made it a place of reflection and respect. It was fascinating to learn about the family's legacy and their impact on Hoi An's cultural heritage.

For lunch, we ventured to Flower Restaurant, a charming eatery known for its traditional Vietnamese dishes. The floral decor and soft lighting created a warm and inviting ambiance. We savored fresh spring rolls and authentic pho, each dish bursting with local flavors. Leila particularly enjoyed the spring rolls, while Hans and I appreciated the rich, aromatic pho. It was a delightful culinary experience that perfectly complemented our exploration of Hoi An's cultural sites.

After lunch, I was eager to do some shopping, so we stopped by Hart Hoi An - Upcycled Home Decor. This unique shop features upcycled and handmade items, showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of local artisans. I was drawn to the beautiful indigo-colored woven products and stunning kimonos. The store's commitment to sustainability and support for local artisans resonated with my values. I found a beautiful piece of fabric made by one of the Vietnamese tribes, which I think I will turn into a jacket when I am back in Potsdam. It will be a great memory of this trip.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Morning Glory Original for dinner. This restaurant is known for its authentic Hoi An street food and traditional Vietnamese dishes. We tried several local specialties, including the famous Cao Lau noodles and white rose dumplings. The bustling atmosphere and delicious food made it a perfect ending to our day of exploration. It's wonderful to see a restaurant that celebrates the local culinary heritage and offers such a comprehensive menu of Hoi An's specialties.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Hoi An's rich cultural heritage. From the ancient houses to the family chapels, each site offered a glimpse into the town's past and the lives of its people. The delicious food and unique crafts added to the charm of this enchanting town. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventure on the Thu Bon River and a visit to a local village, I am excited to continue exploring the beauty and culture of Hoi An.

Tomorrow, we are planning to take a boat trip on the Thu Bon River. I am hoping to capture some amazing photos of the landscape, so I need to remember to charge my camera tonight. I am also looking forward to the Hoi An Village Experience, and to learn more about the daily life of the locals. I am also hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring home to my friends and family. Hans mentioned that he would like to try some local beer in the Soul Kitchen bar, so we will see if we can squeeze that into our schedule.

I am so grateful for these experiences, and I am looking forward to sharing more of our journey with you all. Hoi An has a way of capturing your heart and leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.
