Chugging Through History, Soaring Through Scenery

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of history and panoramic views that truly captured the essence of Pelion. From the rhythmic chugging of an old train to the serene heights of an observation point, I felt like I was peeling back layers of time and landscape. This solo journey is turning out to be even more enriching than I imagined, and I can't wait to share all the details.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Souarè Anelion Pelion. The homemade breakfast was prepared with love, as they say, and enjoying it in the central square of Anelion was a perfect way to start the day. It reminded me of mornings back in Bamyan, where simple, wholesome food shared in the heart of the community always set the tone for a good day. After breakfast, I made my way to Ano Lehonia, eager to board the legendary Train of Pilio.

The Train of Pilio, or 'Moutzouris' as it’s affectionately known—meaning 'turns things black'—is a narrow-gauge railway that once served as a vital link for the villages of Pelion. Built between 1892 and 1903, it connected Volos with Milies, facilitating the transport of people and goods. The railway was designed by Evaristo de Chirico, the father of the famous painter Giorgio de Chirico, who was born in Volos. It’s said that young Giorgio was inspired by the construction of the railway, and elements of it appear in his artwork.

As the train chugged along the narrow tracks, I couldn't help but marvel at the feat of engineering. The route is only 60 centimeters wide, making it one of the narrowest in the world. The scenery was breathtaking. Lush forests of plane trees, olives, and pines cascaded down the slopes, while the Aegean Sea sparkled in the distance. The train passed over stone bridges and through tunnels, each turn revealing a new vista.

The train made a brief stop at Ano Gatzea, a charming village where I stretched my legs and soaked in the atmosphere. Back on board, the journey continued towards Milies, the final destination. Approaching Milies, the landscape became even more dramatic, especially as we crossed the steel bridge of Taxiarchis, also known as De Chirico’s Bridge. It’s a unique structure where the bridge is straight, but the tracks curve, a testament to the ingenuity of its design.

Milies itself is a picturesque village, with cobbled paths leading to the center. I explored the village, visiting the Church of the Archangels, built before 1741, and the folklore museum. The village exuded a sense of history and tradition, a feeling that resonated deeply with me, reminding me of the cultural preservation efforts I champion back in Potsdam.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are not about reaching a destination, but about experiencing the path that leads you there.

After Milies, I took a local bus towards the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point. The bus ride itself was an adventure, winding through narrow mountain roads with stunning views at every turn. Arriving at the observation point, I was greeted by a sight that took my breath away.

From the Pelion Cross, the panorama was simply magnificent. The rolling hills of Pelion stretched out before me, dotted with villages and forests, and the Pagasetic Gulf glistened in the distance. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the occasional call of a bird. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to reflect on my journey and appreciate the beauty of this place.

As I stood there, gazing at the view, I thought about the journey that had brought me here. From the bustling streets of Potsdam to the tranquil mountains of Pelion, it’s been a journey of discovery, both of the world and of myself. I thought of Hans and Leila, wishing they could share this moment with me. Perhaps one day, we’ll return together, and I can show them the wonders of Pelion.

For lunch, I stopped at Synantisi, a local taverna. I savored traditional Greek dishes, each bite bursting with flavor. It was a simple meal, but it was made special by the warm hospitality of the staff and the stunning view from the taverna.

In the late afternoon, I treated myself to a coffee at Mountain Top Cafe - Pelion. The cafe lived up to its name, offering even more stunning views. Sipping my coffee, I watched the sun begin its descent, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Dinner was at Tavern Pelion Geuseis Portaria, where the hospitality was as outstanding as the food. I was welcomed with tsipouro shots and freshly grilled bread. I tried the pork and beef stew and the Skopelos cheese-pie, which were delicious. The warm and friendly atmosphere made me feel like I was dining with family.

As I write this, back in my cozy guesthouse, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of today. Pelion has a way of captivating the soul, of connecting you to the past and the present. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Limnionas Beach and the Spring of Manas, continuing my journey of discovery. I am also hoping to find some local crafts at the Mediterraneo Art Store. I am eager to see what new adventures await.

Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new things, meeting new people, and learning about different ways of life. It’s about stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing the unknown. And as I continue my solo cultural exploration in Pelion, I am excited to see what other lessons and experiences this journey has in store for me.
