Day 8: Farewell Snaefellsnes: A Day of Waterfalls and Lasting Memories
Discover the enchanting waterfalls of Snaefellsnes, savor local flavors, and bid adieu to Iceland with cherished memories and new friends.
Saying Goodbye with Waterfalls & Icelandic Treats
As our Icelandic adventure on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula draws to a close, today was a bittersweet symphony of natural beauty and culinary delights. It’s hard to believe our 8-day journey has come to an end, but what better way to celebrate the last day than by exploring more of Iceland's stunning landscapes and enjoying its delicious cuisine?
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Hlaðan Veitingahús. This charming restaurant, part of the Lava Resort, is known for its use of fresh, local ingredients. I opted for the traditional Icelandic skyr with berries and a slice of their homemade bread. It was the perfect way to start the day, fueling us for our waterfall adventures. Klaus, of course, had his usual strong coffee, while Sofia enjoyed a stack of pancakes. I must admit, after eight days of Icelandic breakfasts, I'm starting to feel like a true Viking!
Our first stop was Lísafoss. This waterfall, nestled along the Snæfellsnesvegur, is a hidden gem. The walk to the falls was easy, and the scenery was simply breathtaking. The lush greenery surrounding the cascading water created a tranquil atmosphere. I captured some beautiful photographs, trying to preserve the magic of the moment. Sofia, ever the curious explorer, was fascinated by the diverse bird species in the area.

Next on our itinerary was Höskuldargerði, located in the charming village of Reykholt. This picturesque attraction is steeped in Viking history. As we strolled through the area, we explored remnants of ancient structures and learned about the region's storied past. The landscape, dotted with lush greenery and striking volcanic formations, was perfect for a leisurely walk. Klaus, always the history buff, was captivated by the Viking heritage, while Sofia enjoyed running around the open spaces.

It is not the destination that matters, but the memories created along the way.
Our final waterfall of the day was Laxfoss. Although smaller than some of the other waterfalls we’ve seen, Laxfoss has its own unique charm. The surrounding landscape was serene, and the sound of the water cascading over the rocks was soothing. We spent some time simply soaking in the tranquility of the area. As we were leaving, we saw a few fishermen trying their luck – Laxfoss, after all, means “Salmon Falls”.

Before dinner, we decided to stop by Skipper Restaurant in Ólafsvík for a drink. This cozy spot offered a great view of the harbor. I enjoyed a glass of Icelandic beer, while Klaus opted for a local schnapps. Sofia, of course, had a soda. It was a relaxing way to unwind after a day of exploring.

For our farewell dinner, we chose Bjargarsteinn Mathús in Grundarfjörður. This restaurant is housed in a charming old building with a unique history, having been relocated from Akranes. The menu changes daily, focusing on fresh, local ingredients. The view of Kirkjufell mountain and the fjord added to the ambiance. I savored a delicious seafood platter, while Klaus enjoyed a traditional Icelandic lamb dish. The staff was incredibly accommodating, even preparing a special vegan dish for a couple at the next table. The meal was a perfect ending to our culinary journey through Snaefellsnes.

As I reflect on our 8-day adventure, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we’ve shared. From the majestic mountains to the stunning coastlines, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula has truly captured my heart. I am especially grateful for the chance to have shared this experience with my friends. The laughter, the shared discoveries, and the camaraderie have made this trip unforgettable. I am also thankful for the warmth and hospitality of the Icelandic people, who have welcomed us with open arms.
Though our journey through the Snaefellsnes Peninsula ends here, the memories we've created will last a lifetime. I am already dreaming of our next adventure, perhaps exploring the northern lights or hiking in the highlands. Until then, I will cherish the moments we've shared in this magical land of fire and ice.
Tomorrow, we head back to Reykjavik for our flight back to Bonn. It's always hard to leave a place that has captured your heart, but I know I will carry a piece of Iceland with me wherever I go. Thank you, Snaefellsnes, for the adventure of a lifetime! I hope my stories have inspired you to explore this incredible corner of the world. Until next time, bless.
P.S. I almost forgot! I did manage to find a small travel pillow at a local shop today. No more neck cramps on the flight back! It seems I’m not the only one who forgets things sometimes; Klaus realized he left his favorite hat at our guesthouse in Stykkishólmur. We’ll have to make a return trip just to retrieve it!
