A Day of Fire, Water, and Serenity

Today was a day of contrasts, a true reflection of Iceland’s diverse beauty. We started with a challenging hike up a volcanic crater, then immersed ourselves in an art installation dedicated to water, and ended the day soaking in a secluded hot spring. It was the kind of day that reminds you why you travel – to experience the unexpected and find serenity in the most unusual places.

Our day began early, fueled by a hearty Icelandic breakfast at Lýsuhóll. The buffet was a delightful spread of local cheeses, smoked salmon, and freshly baked bread. I even tried skyr with berries, a traditional Icelandic yogurt that’s both creamy and tart. It reminded me a bit of labneh from back home, but with a uniquely Icelandic twist. I made sure to grab an extra piece of rye bread; Klaus always teases me about how much I love it, but it’s just so good! We needed the energy for our first adventure: hiking the Eldborg Crater Trailhead.

The drive to the trailhead was scenic, with vast lava fields stretching out on either side of the road. The landscape was stark and beautiful, a reminder of the powerful forces that have shaped this island. As we approached Eldborg, its perfectly formed cone rose majestically from the surrounding terrain. It felt like stepping onto another planet. The hike itself was moderately challenging. The trail was rocky in places, and the wind was relentless, but the views were worth every step. Sofia, surprisingly, took the lead, her little legs pumping with determination. Klaus and I trailed behind, trying to keep up while also snapping photos of the stunning scenery. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of moss and volcanic rock.

Reaching the crater rim was exhilarating. The sheer scale of the opening was breathtaking, a gaping maw into the earth's fiery past. We walked along the edge, taking in the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. You could see for miles in every direction, a tapestry of lava fields, mountains, and distant coastline. I imagined the earth rumbling beneath our feet thousands of years ago when this volcano was still active. It’s humbling to stand in a place with so much history etched into its very form.

To truly appreciate the beauty of Iceland, one must embrace its contrasts – the fire and ice, the serenity and the storm.

After descending from Eldborg, we were ready for a change of pace. Our next stop was Vatnasafn, the Library of Water, in Stykkishólmur. This unique art installation, created by American artist Roni Horn, is housed in a former library overlooking the town's harbor. Inside, 24 glass columns hold water collected from Iceland’s major glaciers. The effect is mesmerizing. The light filters through the water, creating a kaleidoscope of reflections on the floor. Some columns are crystal clear, while others are cloudy with sediment, each one telling a different story about the glacier it came from.

The Library of Water is more than just a visual experience. The floor is inscribed with Icelandic and English words related to weather, inviting contemplation on the relationship between nature and language. There was even a chess board set up, a nod to the town’s love for the game. It was a peaceful, contemplative space, a welcome contrast to the ruggedness of the volcanic landscape we had just left behind. Sofia was particularly fascinated by the columns of water, running her hands along the cool glass and whispering about the glaciers they came from. It sparked a conversation about climate change and the importance of preserving these icy giants, a lesson I was glad she was absorbing.

For lunch, we stopped at Agnið streetfood in Stykkishólmur. I opted for the fish and chips, a classic Icelandic fast food, while Klaus tried the fish tacos. The food was fresh and delicious, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home. We sat at a picnic table overlooking the harbor, watching the boats bobbing in the water and soaking in the lively atmosphere of the town. It was the perfect way to refuel before our final adventure of the day.

Our last stop was Landbrotalaug Hot Springs, a hidden gem tucked away in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. This small, natural hot spring is a bit off the beaten path, but that’s part of its charm. After parking the car, we walked across a shallow, marshy area to reach the spring. The surrounding landscape was surreal – a vast expanse of lava fields covered in moss, with rolling hills in the distance.

Landbrotalaug itself is tiny, only big enough for a few people. Luckily, we had the place to ourselves. The water was warm and soothing, a perfect temperature for relaxing after a long day of hiking and exploring. We sank into the water, letting the geothermal heat ease our tired muscles. The silence was broken only by the gentle sound of the wind and the occasional call of a bird. It was a moment of pure bliss, a chance to connect with nature and escape the stresses of everyday life. Sofia loved it, of course, splashing around gently and giggling with delight. Even Klaus, who is not always a fan of hot springs, seemed to be enjoying himself.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape, we reluctantly dragged ourselves out of the water. We knew we had to get back to our guesthouse for dinner, but we lingered for a few minutes more, savoring the peace and tranquility of this magical place.

Dinner tonight is at Hjá Góðu Fólki. I’ve heard wonderful things about their fresh, local cuisine and cozy atmosphere. I am looking forward to trying some traditional Icelandic dishes and sharing stories of our day’s adventures with Klaus and Sofia.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, including the Súgandisey Island Lighthouse and the Dagverðará River. I am excited to see what other hidden gems this region has in store for us. For now, though, I am content to relax, reflect on the day, and dream of glaciers, volcanoes, and hidden hot springs. It’s moments like these that make me so grateful for the opportunity to travel and experience the world with my loved ones. Good night from Iceland!

Oh, and I made sure to pick up some sunglasses today, after remembering I’d forgotten them from my essentials list. I’m definitely going to need them tomorrow!
