Whispers of the Wild

Today was a day of immersion in the raw, untamed beauty of Epirus. Leaving behind the familiar streets of Ioannina, I ventured into a world sculpted by time and nature's artistry. It was a journey that stirred my soul, reminding me of the profound connection we share with the earth. The experiences of the day were filled with awe-inspiring vistas and moments of quiet contemplation, etching themselves into my memory as a testament to the power and serenity of the natural world.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at No Ties. Fuelled up with a strong coffee and a traditional Greek pastry, I set off towards Vikos National Park. The drive itself was a treat, winding through verdant hills and picturesque villages. I could already feel the city's hustle and bustle fading into a distant memory as the landscape embraced me with its tranquil charm.

Vikos National Park is a realm of dramatic contrasts. Towering peaks meet plunging gorges, and dense forests give way to open meadows. It's a place where the elements have conspired to create a landscape that's both awe-inspiring and humbling. As I stepped out of the car, the air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. I took a deep breath, feeling the energy of the mountains invigorate my senses.

My first stop within the park was the famed Vikos Gorge, often cited as one of the deepest canyons in the world relative to its width. Standing at the edge, gazing into the abyss, I was struck by the sheer scale of it all. The layers of rock, carved over millennia by the relentless flow of the Voidomatis River, told a story of geological time. It was a humbling reminder of the earth's enduring power. I thought about Klaus and Sofia, and how they would marvel at this view. I made a mental note to bring them here someday; Sofia would love collecting little rocks, and Klaus would enjoy photographing the landscape.

I decided to embark on a short hike along one of the trails that skirted the gorge. The path was well-maintained, but the terrain was uneven in places, requiring careful footing. As I walked, I was enveloped by the sounds of nature – the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the distant murmur of the river below. The sun dappled through the canopy, creating a mosaic of light and shadow on the forest floor. It was a sensory symphony that soothed my soul. I was glad I remembered my comfortable walking shoes; my feet were grateful for the support.

The earth has music for those who listen.

After a couple of hours of hiking, I made my way to the Stone Forest, near Monodendri. This geological formation is a collection of limestone pillars that resemble a petrified forest. The rocks, sculpted by wind and rain, stand like silent sentinels, guarding the secrets of the mountains. As I wandered through this surreal landscape, I couldn't help but feel like I had stepped into another world. The play of light and shadow on the stone pillars created an ethereal atmosphere, and I found myself lost in contemplation.

The Stone Forest was particularly fascinating. The way the limestone had eroded over centuries, forming these bizarre, tree-like structures, was a testament to nature's artistry. I spent a good hour wandering among the formations, taking photographs from every angle. It was a photographer's dream, with endless opportunities to capture the unique beauty of the landscape. I imagined what it must have been like for the first people to stumble upon this place, and what stories they might have told about it. It felt like a place of magic, a place where the veil between worlds was thin.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Un Mondo Diverso, a charming restaurant I discovered in a nearby village. I savored traditional Greek dishes, each bite bursting with fresh, local flavors. The restaurant's cozy ambiance and warm hospitality made it the perfect place to recharge before continuing my adventure. I tried a local cheese pie, and it reminded me of the ones my mother-in-law, Helga, used to make back in Bonn. It brought a smile to my face, thinking of her. I must try to recreate it when I get home.

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to treat myself to a drink at OPEN BAR in Ioannina. The bar had a lively atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered a local beer and sat back, soaking in the vibrant energy of the place. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring the great outdoors. According to Wanderlog, OPEN BAR is a trendy venue that blends drinks, dining, and local culture. The music was indeed loud, but the positive energy was infectious.

Dinner was at Du Sel Restaurant, a culinary gem recommended by a local I met earlier in the day. The restaurant's elegant setting and innovative menu promised a memorable dining experience. I indulged in a multi-course meal that showcased the region's finest ingredients, each dish a work of art in both presentation and flavor. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration and discovery.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Epirus. Vikos National Park and the Stone Forest are places that will stay with me long after I've left. They are reminders of the beauty and power of nature, and the importance of preserving these precious landscapes for future generations.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Archaeological Site of Dodoni and the Oxya Viewpoint. I’m excited to delve deeper into the history and culture of this fascinating region. The Boheme shop is also on my list; perhaps I’ll find a unique souvenir to remind me of my time here. I'm looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery, and I can't wait to share my experiences with you all.

The Greek Summer School – Orthoptera Sound System (GSS – OSS) will be held in Konitsa, Greece, from July 22-28, 2025. It sounds like a fascinating event for those interested in bioacoustics and Orthoptera research. Perhaps I can attend next year!

For now, though, I'll rest, and dream of stone forests and gorges.

Until tomorrow,
Fatima
