Finding Peace and History in Bsharri

Today was a day of exploring the heart of Bsharri, a town that continues to surprise me with its blend of natural beauty and historical depth. After nearly two weeks in this region, I'm still uncovering hidden gems and feeling a deeper connection to the soul of Lebanon. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place – to immerse myself fully in a new culture and discover the stories woven into the landscape.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Mont Blanc Des Cedres bakery. The aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air, a comforting scent that reminded me of the bakeries back in Al-Suqaylabiyah. I savored a traditional Lebanese pastry, its flaky layers and sweet filling providing the perfect start to the day. Sipping my strong Arabic coffee, I watched as locals bustled in and out, their morning routines unfolding around me. It’s these small, everyday moments that make me feel most connected to a place.

Fueled and ready, I set off to Saint George Public Park, a tranquil haven in the heart of Bsharri. The park was a tapestry of lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and peaceful pathways. I strolled along the winding trails, the crisp mountain air filling my lungs. Families were gathered, children laughing as they played, and couples sat hand-in-hand, enjoying the serenity. I found a quiet bench overlooking the valley and spent some time journaling, reflecting on my journey so far. The park offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains, a perfect backdrop for contemplation.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of places, where nature and community intertwine to create a sense of belonging.

Next on my list was Khan El Askar, a historical site that whispered tales of Lebanon's rich past. This 14th-century khan, once a Mamluk-era garrison, now stands as a testament to the region's layered history. As I wandered through the ancient stone corridors and courtyards, I imagined the soldiers who once occupied this space, their lives and stories now etched into the very walls. The architecture was fascinating, a blend of Mamluk and Ottoman influences. I spent a good hour exploring the site, piecing together the fragments of its history and marveling at the resilience of these ancient structures.

For lunch, I ventured to Sakhret Kannoubine-Restaurant, a culinary gem known for its authentic Lebanese cuisine and breathtaking views of the Kannoubine Valley. The restaurant was nestled in a picturesque location, the valley stretching out before me in all its glory. I ordered a selection of mezze, small plates filled with vibrant flavors and textures. Each dish was a celebration of local ingredients, expertly prepared and beautifully presented. The hummus was creamy and smooth, the falafel crispy and flavorful, and the tabbouleh bursting with freshness. As I savored each bite, I felt a deep appreciation for the culinary traditions of Lebanon. It was a meal that nourished both body and soul.

In the late afternoon, I decided to visit La Jetée, a historical landmark offering panoramic views of Bsharri and the surrounding landscape. The site has a captivating history, and the views were simply breathtaking. I spent some time wandering around, taking in the scenery and reflecting on the day's adventures.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Borea, a cozy bar in Bsharri known for its inviting atmosphere and stunning mountain views. I ordered a glass of local Lebanese wine and settled in to watch the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. The bar was filled with a mix of locals and tourists, all sharing stories and laughter. I struck up a conversation with a group of Lebanese friends who were eager to share their insights into the region's culture and history. Their warmth and hospitality made me feel like I was among old friends.

Tomorrow marks the last day of my journey through the Bsharri District. It's hard to believe how quickly these past two weeks have flown by. I'm already feeling a sense of nostalgia, knowing that I'll soon be leaving this beautiful region and its welcoming people. But I'm also excited for the adventures that await me tomorrow. My itinerary includes a visit to the ProX Riding Club and the غابة صنوبر (Pine Forest). I'm looking forward to spending some time outdoors, soaking in the natural beauty of the area one last time. I also plan to visit Anoubin Market for some last minute souvenir shopping.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a moment to reflect on the day. From the tranquil beauty of Saint George Public Park to the historical echoes of Khan El Askar, and the culinary delights of Sakhret Kannoubine, today was a testament to the richness and diversity of Bsharri. I am grateful for the experiences I've had, the people I've met, and the lessons I've learned. As I prepare to bid farewell to this enchanting region, I know that a piece of my heart will forever remain here, amidst the mountains, valleys, and cedars of Lebanon.

Back at my guesthouse, I thought about my family. I miss Klaus and the children, Aisha and Malik, dearly. I know they would have loved exploring these ancient sites and savoring the delicious Lebanese cuisine with me. I promised to bring back stories and souvenirs, and I can't wait to share my experiences with them. Perhaps one day, we'll all return to Lebanon together, and I can show them the beauty and warmth of this incredible country.

As I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. Tomorrow is the final chapter of this solo journey, and I'm determined to make the most of it. Bsharri, you have captured my heart, and I will carry your spirit with me wherever I go.
