Finding Peace in the Valley and the Forest

Today was a day of contrasts, moving from serene valleys to lush forests, all while savoring the tastes of authentic Lebanese cuisine. It was a day that reminded me why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place: to find moments of peace and connection amidst the beauty of this land.

My day began with a hearty Lebanese breakfast at Abou Joseph Restaurant. The aroma of freshly baked bread and the rich scent of za'atar filled the air, instantly transporting me back to the flavors of my childhood. It reminded me of mornings in Al-Suqaylabiyah, where my grandmother would prepare similar breakfasts for our family. It’s these small connections to home that make my travels so much more meaningful. I savored every bite, knowing that each ingredient was sourced locally, a testament to the freshness and authenticity of Lebanese cuisine.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Valle Santa. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering glimpses of the majestic mountains that surround the Bsharri District. As I arrived, the valley unfolded before me, a tapestry of lush greenery and rolling hills. The tranquility was palpable, a welcome escape from the bustling energy of daily life. I spent hours wandering through the trails, camera in hand, capturing the vibrant flora and fauna that thrive in this natural sanctuary. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and damp earth. I found myself reflecting on the importance of preserving such spaces, not just for their beauty, but for the sense of peace they offer to those who seek it.

The beauty of nature lies not just in what you see, but in what it awakens within you.

Next on my itinerary was Horsh Ehden, a nature reserve renowned for its diverse forest of Lebanon cedars. The reserve is located on the northwestern slopes of Mount Lebanon and experiences high precipitation, making it home to numerous rare and endemic plants. As I entered the reserve, I was immediately struck by the towering cedars, their branches reaching towards the sky like ancient arms. The sheer size and age of these trees were humbling, a reminder of the enduring power of nature. I learned that Horsh Ehden contains a forest of the cedar of Lebanon, making it a part of the country's cultural and natural heritage. The forest also includes a mixed forest of juniper, fir, and the country's last protected community of wild apple trees.

I hiked along the marked trails, marveling at the biodiversity of the reserve. Over 1,058 plant species have been identified in the reserve, accounting for nearly 40% of all native plant species in Lebanon. The forest floor was a carpet of vibrant green, dotted with colorful wildflowers. The sounds of birdsong filled the air, creating a symphony of nature that soothed my soul. I even tried to spot some of the endangered eastern imperial eagles or Bonelli's eagles that call this forest home, but unfortunately, I was not lucky enough to see one.

As the afternoon wore on, I made my way back to Bsharri, eager to experience more of its culinary offerings. For lunch, I chose La Jetée, a restaurant known for its stunning vistas and rich cultural significance. The restaurant's location provided a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains, enhancing the dining experience. I savored a delicious meal while soaking in the panoramic scenery, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such beauty.

In the evening, I decided to try Kawkab Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant is located along Baalbeck Road, offering an inviting atmosphere that combines traditional decor with modern comforts. I indulged in a variety of mezze, grilled meats, and fresh seafood, each dish bursting with flavor and reflecting the region's culinary heritage. The staff was warm and welcoming, making me feel like a cherished guest.

To cap off the day, I ventured to Vibes_lb_, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. It was a Friday night, and the place was buzzing with energy. The music was infectious, and the crowd was a mix of locals and tourists, all eager to unwind and enjoy themselves. I ordered a traditional Lebanese drink and struck up a conversation with a group of locals, sharing stories and laughter. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with new people.
