A Day of Faith and Gardens
Today was a day of reflection and exploration, delving deeper into the spiritual and historical heart of the Bsharri District. From the heights of Saydet el Hosn, with its panoramic views, to the tranquil gardens dedicated to the Maronite Patriarchs, I felt a profound connection to this land and its people. It was a day filled with simple pleasures, from the taste of authentic Lebanese cuisine to the quiet moments of contemplation amidst ancient stones.

My day began with a hearty Lebanese breakfast at LBayt Baytak. The warm hospitality and the delicious spread of local delicacies were the perfect start to a day of exploration. I savored the fresh flavors, thinking of Klaus and the children, wishing they could be here to share this experience with me. Aisha would have loved the fresh bread, and Malik would have devoured the olives. It’s these moments that make me realize how much I miss them when I travel solo, but also how important it is for me to have these experiences to bring back and share with them.
First on the itinerary was Saydet el Hosn - Lady of the Fortress. The drive up to Ehden was breathtaking, with the landscape transforming into a canvas of green valleys and terraced hills. As I ascended, I could feel the air getting crisper, carrying with it the scent of pine and earth. The weather in Bsharri during September is generally mild, with average temperatures around 23°C, making it perfect for exploring the outdoors.
Reaching Saydet el Hosn, I was immediately struck by its imposing presence. Perched high on a hill, the church offered panoramic views that stretched across North Lebanon, even reaching into Syrian lands. The site has a rich history, dating back nearly two thousand years when the inhabitants of Ehden built a fortress to ward off enemies. Over time, it evolved into a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a testament to the deep faith of the people in this region.
The spirit of the place was palpable, a blend of reverence, history, and natural beauty that left me humbled and inspired.
I explored both the ancient and modern churches, each telling a story of resilience and devotion. The ancient church, built with stones from the original fortress, exuded a sense of timelessness. The modern cathedral, constructed in 1989, stood as a symbol of the enduring faith of the community. Inside, the icons and stained-glass windows created an atmosphere of serene contemplation. I lit a candle, offering a prayer for my family, for peace in Syria, and for all those who have lost their way.
Leaving Saydet el Hosn, I made my way to Les Jardins des Patriarches Maronites. Located in Dimane, these gardens commemorate the Maronite Patriarchs who have led the community since its early ages. The gardens overlook the Qannoubine Valley, a historical refuge for the Maronites for centuries.

The gardens themselves were a peaceful oasis, a place to reflect on the history and heritage of the Maronite community. The air was filled with the scent of flowers and herbs, and the gentle breeze carried the sound of birdsong. I wandered through the pathways, admiring the statues and monuments dedicated to the patriarchs, each a reminder of the leadership and guidance they provided to their people.
For lunch, I stopped at Rtc - Restaurant in Bsharri. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the menu was filled with traditional Lebanese dishes. I opted for a mezze platter, a selection of small dishes that offered a variety of flavors and textures. From the creamy hummus to the tangy stuffed grape leaves, each bite was a delight. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Cedart - Liliane. This local shop offered a variety of artisanal products, from handcrafted jewelry to traditional Lebanese crafts. I picked up a few souvenirs for Aisha and Malik, small tokens to remind them of my journey. I also found a beautiful handwoven scarf for myself, a reminder of the colors and textures of Lebanon.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Paradise Cedars Restaurant & Chalets for dinner. Nestled in the heart of the cedar forests, this restaurant offered a magical setting for an evening meal. The air was crisp and cool, and the scent of cedar filled the air. The restaurant itself was warm and inviting, with a rustic charm that made me feel right at home.

I sat on the outdoor terrace, soaking in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The menu featured a variety of local and international dishes, but I decided to stick with the Lebanese theme and ordered a grilled meat platter. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the accompanying vegetables were fresh and delicious. As I savored my meal, I watched the sun set behind the mountains, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Kadisha Valley and the Horsh Ehden. I am looking forward to discovering more of the natural beauty and historical significance of this region. I might even stop by Vibes_lb_ for a drink in the evening, if I am feeling adventurous.
As I reflect on today, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful land and its rich culture. It is a reminder that even in the midst of challenges and uncertainties, there is always beauty and hope to be found. And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I carry with me the spirit of Saydet el Hosn and the wisdom of the Maronite Patriarchs, guiding me on my journey.
