Day 2: Chasing Turquoise Dreams: Laguna 69 and the Majesty of Huascaran
An exhilarating day of hiking to Laguna 69 and exploring the stunning landscapes of Huascaran National Park with friends.
A Day of Altitude and Azure: Laguna 69
Today was a day that tested our limits and rewarded us with views that will forever be etched in my memory. The destination? Laguna 69, a mesmerizing turquoise lake nestled high in the Huascaran National Park. It was more than just a hike; it was an immersion into the raw, untamed beauty of the Peruvian Andes.

Our day began early, with a hearty breakfast at Bosque Del Prado. The food was simple, but nourishing, exactly what we needed to fuel up for the adventure ahead. Emilio, the owner, was incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. As I savored my coffee, I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement mixed with a healthy dose of trepidation. I knew the hike to Laguna 69 would be challenging, especially with the altitude, but the promise of those turquoise waters kept me motivated. My friends and I made sure to pack extra snacks from REGALOS Y DETALLES EL CHINITO to have on the go.

The drive to the trailhead was an adventure in itself. The scenery was breathtaking, with towering peaks and deep valleys unfolding before our eyes. Even though December is considered part of the rainy season, the landscape was lush and green, adding an extra layer of vibrancy to the already stunning views. I couldn't resist snapping photos at every turn, trying to capture the grandeur of it all. It reminded me of the landscapes back home in Zahlé, Lebanon, although on a much grander scale. I shared stories with my friends, reminiscing about childhood hikes in the mountains, and how those experiences shaped my love for the outdoors.
As we started our ascent, the air grew thinner, and the climb became more demanding. The trail wound its way through rocky terrain, with the occasional stream crossing adding a touch of adventure. We took our time, pacing ourselves and stopping frequently to catch our breath and hydrate. The views, even from the lower elevations, were simply incredible. The snow-capped peaks seemed to pierce the sky, and the valleys stretched out like emerald carpets. I felt a sense of awe and gratitude to be surrounded by such natural beauty.
The mountains are calling and I must go.
There were moments when I questioned my ability to reach the top. The altitude was definitely taking its toll, and my lungs burned with each step. But then I would look around at my friends, their faces flushed but determined, and I would find renewed strength. We encouraged each other, shared snacks, and laughed at our own struggles, creating a bond that only shared experiences can forge. I thought about Jihad and Lina back home in Toronto, and how much I wished they could be here to experience this with me.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we reached Laguna 69. And let me tell you, it was worth every ounce of effort. The lake was even more stunning in person than in the photos I had seen. The turquoise water shimmered in the sunlight, reflecting the surrounding snow-capped peaks like a mirror. It was a scene of such serene beauty that it almost felt surreal. We spent a long time simply sitting by the lake, soaking in the views and savoring the moment. It was a perfect moment of peace and tranquility, a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
After Laguna 69, we decided to embark on a small portion of the Trek Santa Cruz. The trek was beautiful with views of the Cordillera Blanca. Although we did not complete the full trek, we were able to see a good portion of what it had to offer. The weather in December can be unpredictable, but we were fortunate to have clear skies for most of the day.

The descent was, surprisingly, almost as challenging as the ascent. My knees protested with every step, and I had to be extra careful on the rocky terrain. But the thought of a hot meal and a comfortable bed kept me going. As we neared the bottom, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the mountains. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to an unforgettable day.
We ended our day with a well-deserved dinner at PAKTA Restaurante. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect for relaxing and recounting our adventure. I opted for a hearty Peruvian dish, savoring the flavors and reflecting on the day's experiences. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a stop at Trivio Resto Bar for a nightcap. The atmosphere was lively, and we enjoyed chatting with the locals and sharing stories about our travels. I tried a local craft beer, which was surprisingly good, and toasted to a successful day of hiking and exploration. The name Trivio comes from the latin word “Trivium” where people would come together to share stories about life, love, and the news of the day. It was a fitting end to a day filled with camaraderie and shared experiences.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Huascarán and Quebrada de Llanganuco. I'm excited to see what other natural wonders this park has in store for us. But for now, I'm content to rest my weary legs and dream of turquoise lakes and snow-capped peaks.
As I lay in bed, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. Today was a reminder of the power of nature to inspire and rejuvenate, and the importance of sharing these experiences with friends. I am so glad I decided to come to Peru with my friends, it is an experience that I will cherish forever. And I am excited for what tomorrow brings, I will make sure to pack a portable charger this time, as I forgot it back at the accommodation again!
