Echoes of the Past: A Day Among Ancient Giants
Today, I embarked on a journey through time, exploring the ancient heart of Rhodes. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring ruins, delicious Greek cuisine, and the vibrant energy of this historical island. Join me as I recount my adventures wandering through the Acropolis of Rhodes and ancient stadium, where the echoes of civilizations past still resonate.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Socratous Garden. The restaurant had a really nice atmosphere, and the staff was very friendly. I enjoyed a classic Greek breakfast – fresh yogurt with local honey and fruit, accompanied by strong, aromatic Greek coffee. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. Socratous Garden is known for allowing dogs and also being good for children, so it is a family friendly place.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I made my way to the Acropolis of Rhodes. Unlike other acropoleis I've visited, this one wasn't fortified, which gave it a unique, open feel. As I climbed the slopes of Monte Smith, I was struck by the panoramic views of the city and the Aegean Sea. The Acropolis itself is a collection of sanctuaries, temples, and public buildings, each telling a story of ancient Rhodian life. The Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus stood proudly, their weathered stones whispering tales of gods and goddesses.

Wandering through the ruins, I imagined the bustling activity that once filled this space. The Italian Archaeological School originally led the excavation of the Acropolis from 1912 to 1945. Afterwards, the Greek Archaeological Service took over and provided fascinating insight into the history. I learned that the Acropolis dates back to the 5th century BC and served as the religious and cultural center of ancient Rhodes. I was particularly drawn to the Temple of Pythian Apollo. Though partially reconstructed, the remaining columns offered a glimpse of its former grandeur. I could almost picture the ancient Rhodians offering their prayers to Apollo, the god of music, poetry, and light. The temple was built in the second century BC in the Doric style and was situated in an enclosed precinct.
“To walk through the Acropolis of Rhodes is to walk through the pages of history, each stone a testament to the enduring spirit of human civilization.”
Next, I ventured to the Ancient Stadium of Rhodes, a short distance from the Acropolis. This remarkably well-preserved stadium transported me back to the days of athletic competitions and festivals. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, the stadium was once the venue for the Haleion Games, honoring Helios, the sun god. I could almost hear the cheers of the crowds as athletes competed in running, wrestling, and other sports. The stadium is oriented north to south and is 210-meters long. It was initially restored by the Italians, and surviving features include the sphendone, proedries, and some spectator seating.

Standing on the ancient track, I imagined the athletes of old, their determination etched on their faces as they raced towards victory. It was inspiring to think that people had gathered here for centuries to celebrate the human spirit through athletic achievement. The stadium was built from locally-sourced limestone and played an integral role in the civic and religious activities of the ancient city. Northwest of the stadium is a small marble theater, and in the surrounding area are ruins of a large building, tombs, and part of the Temple of Pythian Apollo.
After immersing myself in the ancient world, it was time for lunch. I chose Greek Stories, a local restaurant known for its authentic Greek cuisine. As someone who appreciates a good gluten-free meal, I was delighted to find that Greek Stories offers a wide range of gluten-free options. I savored a delicious moussaka, made with layers of eggplant, potatoes, and a rich meat sauce, topped with a creamy béchamel. It was a truly satisfying and flavorful meal. The staff was friendly and helpful, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. Greek Stories has a nice decor and homey atmosphere, making clients feel relaxed. The restaurant is known for offering perfectly cooked chicken, chicken gyro, and fillet steaks, as well as tasty baklava.
