Following the Footsteps of Centaurs in Pelion
Today was a day of mythical exploration and visual feasts here in Pelion. I'm so excited to share our adventures as we hiked through ancient trails and soaked in panoramic views that truly captured the essence of this magical region. Jihad, Lina, and I set out early, ready to immerse ourselves in the legends and landscapes that Pelion is so famous for.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Akti. This restaurant, located in Agios Ioannis, offered a delightful start to our explorations with its Mediterranean cuisine and stunning sea views. I enjoyed a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, while Jihad opted for a savory omelet. Lina, of course, was thrilled with her chocolate croissant. Fuelled and ready, we drove towards Portaria, eager to discover what the day had in store.
Our first stop was the View point Portaria. As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. From the top, we could see the village nestled among the trees, a mesmerizing contrast against the vibrant landscape. The fresh mountain air was invigorating, and the tranquil sounds of nature enveloped us. It was the perfect spot for some family photos, capturing the stunning panoramas that stretched out before us. Lina was particularly excited, pointing out the different landmarks and asking endless questions about the scenery.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
Next on our itinerary was the Centaurs' Path. This trail, steeped in Greek mythology, promised a unique hiking experience. According to legend, Mount Pelion was once home to the centaurs, mythical creatures with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse. As we began our hike, I couldn't help but imagine these creatures roaming the same path we were now treading. The path itself was enchanting, winding through a lush ravine alongside a stream. We crossed wooden bridges, passed small waterfalls, and admired the dense forests of beech, oak, and chestnut trees. The red circles marked on stones made it easy to follow the trail, and Lina enjoyed spotting them along the way.

The Centaurs' Path, near the village of Portaria, is more than just a hike; it's a journey into Greek mythology. The most famous centaur, Chiron, known for his wisdom and healing abilities, is said to have roamed these hills. Jihad, ever the history enthusiast, shared stories of Chiron and his students, including Asclepius, Jason, and Achilles. The air was filled with the sounds of nature – the rustling of leaves, the trickling of water, and the occasional birdsong. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of Toronto.
After our invigorating hike, we were ready for lunch. We headed to KRITSA Restaurant. Located in Portaria, this restaurant is known for its traditional Pelion cuisine and warm hospitality. We indulged in local specialties such as spentzofai (a hearty stew with sausages and peppers) and braised mutton with village pasta. The flavors were rich and comforting, a true taste of Greece. Lina, surprisingly, loved the spentzofai, declaring it her new favorite dish. The staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. Eleni Karaiskou, the creator of the hotel and head of the family, has created a true gastronomic paradise.

As the afternoon sun began to dip, we decided to unwind at ooh la la breezy bar. This bar offered a relaxed atmosphere and refreshing drinks. I savored a glass of local wine while Jihad enjoyed a cold beer. Lina, with her endless energy, played nearby, collecting fallen leaves and flowers. It was a perfect way to relax and reflect on the day's adventures.

For dinner, we chose Pelion Plaza Εστιατόριο - Πιτσαρία και Ενοικιαζόμενα Δωμάτια. Situated against the backdrop of Agios Ioannis Mouresiou, this restaurant is renowned for its variety of Greek dishes. We enjoyed grilled fish, homemade pasta, and wood-fired pizza, a perfect combination to satisfy everyone's cravings. The restaurant’s commitment to fresh, local ingredients was evident in every bite. As we dined al fresco on the terrace, we were treated to panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, with glimpses of the stunning sunset.
