Echoes of the Renaissance

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Florence, a city that continues to inspire and captivate me with its rich history and artistic treasures. It was a day of exploring grand palaces, admiring masterpieces of sculpture, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of its most famous square. I felt like I was walking through the pages of a history book, each corner revealing a new story, a new perspective, and a deeper appreciation for the city's enduring legacy.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Ora d'Aria. It was a wonderful way to fuel up before immersing myself in the city's artistic offerings. The restaurant's ambiance was charming, and the food was delicious, setting a positive tone for the day ahead. I savored every bite, knowing that I needed the energy for the adventures that awaited me.

First stop: Palazzo Vecchio. The sheer grandeur of the palace is breathtaking. I spent hours wandering through its opulent halls, marveling at the intricate frescoes and sculptures. The Salone dei Cinquecento was particularly impressive, its vastness and artistic details leaving me in awe. I learned that from March 14 to June 11, 2025, the Palazzo Vecchio Museum is hosting an exhibition dedicated to Thomas J. Price, featuring sculptural works of varying scale set up within the permanent collection of the museum. It was amazing to see the contemporary works displayed alongside the historical masterpieces, creating an interesting dialogue between different eras.

I was particularly interested in the themed visit focusing on Eleonora di Toledo, understanding her role and influence within the palace walls. Learning about the women who shaped Florence is especially poignant today, International Women's Day. It’s inspiring to walk in the footsteps of such influential figures. This day, March 8th, also means free entry for women to the city's civic museums, a wonderful initiative to celebrate and encourage cultural exploration.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on the list was the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. Housed in what is considered the oldest public building in Florence, the museum's collection of Renaissance sculptures is simply astounding. Seeing Donatello's David up close was a truly special experience. The museum was buzzing with activity. I later learned that starting March 15, 2025, guided tours by museum staff will take place every Saturday. Although I missed the guided tour, I was still able to appreciate the masterpieces on display.

After soaking in the artistic ambiance of the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, my stomach began to rumble, signaling that it was time for lunch. I made my way to Vini e Vecchi Sapori, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Florentine cuisine. I savored every bite of my meal, relishing the flavors of Tuscany and feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such culinary delights. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and friendly service added to the overall enjoyment of the experience. It was a perfect midday break, allowing me to recharge and prepare for the rest of my Florentine adventure.

With renewed energy, I headed to Piazza della Signoria, the heart of Florence. The square was alive with activity, locals and tourists alike milling about, admiring the sculptures and soaking in the atmosphere. The replica of Michelangelo's David stood proudly, a symbol of Florentine pride and artistic achievement. I also noticed a large-scale figurative sculpture by Thomas J Price, part of the exhibition spanning across the Museo Novecento and Palazzo Vecchio. The juxtaposition of modern art against the historical backdrop of the Piazza was thought-provoking, a testament to Florence's ability to embrace both its past and its present.

I took some time to simply sit and observe, watching the world go by. There's something magical about Piazza della Signoria, a sense of history and artistry that permeates the air. I could easily have spent the entire afternoon there, but I had one more stop on my list: Boutique Nadine.

Shopping at Boutique Nadine was a delightful experience. The store had a unique collection of vintage and contemporary pieces, reflecting the eclectic style of Florence. I found a beautiful scarf that I knew would be the perfect souvenir to remind me of my time here. It was a small indulgence, but one that I knew I would treasure for years to come. I learned that Boutique Nadine has two locations; one at Lungarno Acciaiuoli 22r and another on Via de' Benci. I will make sure to check out the other location before I leave Florence.

As evening approached, I made my way to Ristorante Borgo San Jacopo for dinner. The restaurant's location overlooking the Arno River provided a stunning backdrop for my meal. The ambiance was elegant and refined, and the food was exquisite. I savored every course, knowing that this was a meal I would not soon forget. The restaurant's Michelin star is well-deserved. The chef, Claudio Mengoni, transforms carefully chosen Italian ingredients into refined fish, meat and vegetable dishes which respect the seasons and are beautifully presented.

Reflecting on my day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Florence in all its glory. The city's art, history, and culture had touched me in a profound way, leaving me with memories that I would cherish for a lifetime. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore the Boboli Gardens, Pitti Palace, and Basilica di Santo Spirito. I might also visit Antico Caffè del Moro - Art Bar Firenze for a drink.

Even though I am travelling solo, I feel connected to the city and its people. It is a journey of self-discovery, and I am embracing every moment. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, knowing that Florence will continue to surprise and delight me with its endless treasures.

And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I realize that Florence is more than just a destination; it's an experience that nourishes the soul and ignites the imagination.
