Immerse yourself in Florence's art, history, and culinary scene as I explore Piazza del Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, and Ponte Vecchio.
Florence: A Dream Come True
Arriving in Florence felt like stepping into a dream, a world I'd only glimpsed in photographs and movies. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of history and the promise of countless untold stories waiting around every corner. I'm excited to share my first day exploring this magnificent city, a solo adventure fueled by a love for art, culture, and the simple joy of wandering.
My day began with a sensory explosion at Piazza del Duomo. Emerging from the narrow streets, I was instantly dwarfed by the sheer scale and intricate detail of the Duomo, or Florence Cathedral. The Baptistery of San Giovanni stood proudly with its remarkable bronze doors, each panel a masterpiece telling biblical tales. I spent a good hour simply circling the Duomo, craning my neck to take in Brunelleschi's ingenious dome. It’s hard to believe how they managed to build that without modern technology. The Duomo was bustling with activity, and I was far from the only one stopping to stare and take pictures. The energy of the square was contagious, a mix of awe and excitement from locals and tourists alike.

For breakfast, I treated myself to Caffè Gilli, a historic café that has been serving Florentines since 1733. The café exudes old-world charm, with its elegant interior and impeccable service. I savored a cappuccino and a freshly baked pastry, watching the city wake up around me. Sipping my coffee, I felt a profound connection to the countless people who had started their day in the same spot over the centuries. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

Next on my list was the Uffizi Gallery, a treasure trove of Renaissance art. I had pre-booked my ticket, which I highly recommend to avoid the long queues. I wandered through halls filled with masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Botticelli's Birth of Venus was even more breathtaking in person, its ethereal beauty captivating me. I found myself lingering in front of Leonardo da Vinci's works, marveling at his genius and the depth of emotion he captured on canvas. As a marketing coordinator, I appreciate the power of visual storytelling, and the Uffizi was a masterclass in how art can communicate across centuries.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After immersing myself in the Renaissance, hunger called, and I headed to Il Vezzo for lunch. This restaurant is known for its modern take on traditional Tuscan cuisine. I opted for a pasta dish with seasonal vegetables, a burst of fresh flavors that perfectly captured the essence of the region. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, a welcome respite from the bustling city. I was struck by the creativity and passion that went into each dish, a reflection of Florence's vibrant culinary scene.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge in Florence spared from destruction during World War II. Its shops, once occupied by butchers, are now home to jewelers and goldsmiths, their glittering displays adding to the bridge's unique charm. I strolled along the bridge, admiring the Arno River flowing beneath and the picturesque views of the city. The Ponte Vecchio felt like a living testament to Florence's resilience and enduring beauty.

As evening approached, I decided to indulge in a memorable dining experience at La Giostra. This restaurant, owned by a Hapsburg prince, is known for its romantic atmosphere and traditional Tuscan cooking. The ambiance was magical, with candlelit tables and a sense of elegant refinement. I savored a delicious meal of rural Tuscan specialties, accompanied by a glass of local wine. The restaurant's name, meaning carousel, hints at its history, as the space once housed a carousel. The food was exquisite, and the service impeccable, making it a perfect end to a perfect day.

To cap off my first day in Florence, I ventured into the Oltrarno district in search of Rasputin, a hidden speakeasy. After finding the unmarked door and ringing the bell, I was transported to a world of expertly crafted cocktails and an intimate, 1920s-style setting. The bartenders were true mixologists, creating perfectly balanced drinks that were as beautiful as they were delicious. Sipping my cocktail in the dimly lit bar, I felt a sense of excitement and anticipation for the adventures that awaited me in Florence.

March in Florence is proving to be a delightful time to visit. The weather has been cool, around 14°C (57°F) during the day and 5°C (40°F) at night, but the sun has been shining, making it perfect for exploring. I did forget to pack sunscreen, though, and I should have brought an umbrella, just in case! But I’m not letting that get me down.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David up close, then head to Piazzale Michelangelo for panoramic views of the city. I’m also hoping to visit the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, which I’ve heard has stunning mosaics. For dinner, I have reservations at Il Santo Bevitore, and I’m planning to do some shopping at Mio Concept Store.
As I reflect on my first day in Florence, I'm filled with gratitude and excitement. This city is a feast for the senses, a place where history, art, and culture come alive. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
Before I close, I wanted to share a little about what’s happening in Florence this month. There’s a Tracey Emin exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi from March 16 to July 20, and the Florence Korea Film Festival is running from March 20 to 29. Also, if you happen to be here on March 25, you can experience the Florentine New Year, which is a unique celebration of the city’s history and traditions.
Also, I learned today that the Uffizi Gallery is contributing to an exhibition in Riga, Latvia. The exhibit, titled “Italian light: from Fattori to Morandi” will feature 86 masterpieces from the Uffizi Gallery’s collection. It’s amazing to see Florence’s art reaching audiences across Europe!
