Solo Adventure in Chapada Diamantina: Exploring Brazil's Natural Wonders
Day 3: Diving into Azure Dreams: Vale do Pati's Majesty and Poço Azul's Depths
A day of breathtaking contrasts in Chapada Diamantina: trekking Vale do Pati's landscapes and swimming in Poço Azul's crystal depths.
Echoes of the Vale, Reflections in Blue
Today was a day of stark contrasts, a symphony of experiences that resonated deep within my soul. From the challenging yet rewarding trek through the majestic Vale do Pati, a place that whispers ancient stories with every gust of wind, to the serene, almost ethereal swim in the crystal-clear waters of Poço Azul, it was a day that painted a vivid picture of Chapada Diamantina National Park's diverse beauty. It was a day where I felt truly connected to nature, a feeling I've been craving since leaving my busy life in Delft.

The day began early, fueled by a simple yet satisfying breakfast at my accommodation. The sun was already painting the sky with hues of orange and pink as I set off towards Vale do Pati. I had heard tales of its breathtaking landscapes, its challenging trails, and its unparalleled beauty, and I was eager to experience it all firsthand. I made sure to pack my essentials: my reusable water bottle, my trusty camera, and of course, my travel journal to capture every moment of this adventure. The absence of my sunscreen and Brazil guidebook, which I had forgotten to pack, was a minor inconvenience compared to the excitement bubbling within me.
The trek through Vale do Pati was nothing short of transformative. The trail snaked through valleys and over hills, each step revealing a new vista more stunning than the last. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and damp earth. The landscape was a tapestry of greens and browns, punctuated by the vibrant colors of the local flora. It was a challenging hike, no doubt, but the sheer beauty of the surroundings spurred me on, my mind clearing with every step I took. As I navigated the terrain, I couldn't help but reflect on my life back in Delft, my work as a renewable energy consultant, my family, Jan and Amina. I missed them dearly, but I also knew that this solo journey was essential for my own well-being, a chance to reconnect with myself and find solace in nature.
Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that challenge us, pushing us beyond our comfort zones and revealing the hidden strength within.
For lunch, I stopped at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. Katiana Alves commands the kitchen here, and she is knowledgable about new dishes and uses local ingredients as her strong point. I had the Surubim with vegetables and lemon siciliano baked in banana leaf, served with a vinaigrette salad of andu beans and organic rice with ouricuri coconut. It was a delicious meal that rejuvenated me for the rest of my journey.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping at Sangue Bom Brechó & Artesanato - Presentes, suculentas e lembranças. I spent some time browsing through the unique collection of clothes and handcrafted items, each piece telling a story of local artistry and creativity. I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic bird, a memento of my time in Chapada Diamantina, a reminder of the vibrant colors and the joyful spirit of the people here.

As the afternoon sun began its descent, I made my way to Poço Azul, a place that had captured my imagination since I first saw pictures of its ethereal blue waters. The entrance fee was R$ 30, which included the mandatory use of a life jacket. The descent into the cave was an adventure in itself, a winding staircase leading into the heart of the earth. And then, I saw it – Poço Azul. The water was an otherworldly shade of blue, so clear that I could see the bottom of the cave, some twenty meters below.

I showered to remove any sunscreen or lotions, as required, and then, with a deep breath, I stepped into the water. The coolness was a welcome contrast to the heat of the day. I floated effortlessly, suspended in the embrace of the azure depths. The silence within the cave was profound, broken only by the gentle lapping of the water against the rocks. It was a moment of pure serenity, a meditation in motion. I closed my eyes, feeling the weight of the world lift from my shoulders, replaced by a sense of peace and tranquility.
Poço Azul is more than just a beautiful place; it's a place of history, a repository of ancient stories. The cave has yielded the complete fossil record of a megatherium, as well as the remains of other megafauna such as hippos, mammoths, and saber-toothed tigers, dating back millions of years. It's a reminder that this place has been a sanctuary for life for eons, a testament to the enduring power of nature.
As I floated in the azure depths, I thought about Amina and Jan, wishing they could experience this magical place with me. I imagined Amina's eyes widening with wonder at the sight of the blue waters, Jan's quiet appreciation of the geological marvels of the cave. I made a mental note to bring them here someday, to share this experience with the people I love most.
Leaving Poço Azul was like emerging from a dream, the vibrant blue waters fading into memory as I ascended back into the sunlight. The day was drawing to a close, but the experiences of the day would stay with me forever.
For dinner, I returned to my accommodation, where I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal under the stars. The night sky in Chapada Diamantina is a sight to behold, the Milky Way stretching across the heavens like a river of light. I sat there for a long time, gazing at the stars, reflecting on the day's adventures, and feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty of this place. I am dining in the Chapada Diamantina National Park again.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Cachoeira do Sossego and Salão das Areias Coloridas. Before I do that, I will make sure to buy sunscreen, as I forgot to pack it. I might also check out Quinca's Botequim, which is a bar, to wind down at the end of the day.
As I lay in bed, listening to the sounds of the night, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this journey, for the chance to explore the wonders of Chapada Diamantina, for the opportunity to reconnect with myself and find peace in nature. It was a day of contrasts, a symphony of experiences that resonated deep within my soul. And as I drifted off to sleep, I knew that this was just the beginning of my adventure, that there were many more wonders waiting to be discovered in this magical place. I am increasingly thankful for this opportunity, and look forward to the days ahead.
