Finding Serenity in the Heart of Brazil
Today was a day of embracing the tranquility that Chapada Diamantina National Park so generously offers. It's incredible how a place can simultaneously invigorate your spirit with adventure and soothe your soul with its peaceful landscapes. This morning, I set out to discover the hidden gems tucked away in this natural paradise, and what I found was nothing short of magical.
The day began, as most do here, with the sounds of nature – birds chirping and the gentle rustling of leaves. Breakfast was a simple affair, enjoyed amidst the park's serene atmosphere. After fueling up, I set off towards Cachoeira do Sossego, a name that promised exactly what I was seeking: tranquility.
Explore the stunning Cachoeira do Sossego in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, a breathtaking waterfall surrounded by lush landscapes and serene hiking trails.
The trail to Cachoeira do Sossego was an adventure in itself. It was a moderate trek, and I relished every moment, feeling grateful that I had remembered to pack my trusty hiking boots. The path wound through diverse terrains, from rocky paths to stretches alongside the riverbed. The water, with its distinctive caramel hue, was a constant companion, reflecting the sky above and the lush greenery around us. It reminded me of the importance of staying grounded, even when the path ahead seems challenging.
The journey to serenity is as rewarding as the destination itself.
As I navigated the trail, I couldn't help but reflect on how different this was from my daily life in Delft. The structured routine of consulting on renewable energy projects felt a world away from the raw, untamed beauty of Chapada Diamantina. It's a stark contrast, but one that I find incredibly balancing. Here, I'm not just Fatimata, the consultant; I'm Fatimata, the explorer, the adventurer, the woman reconnecting with the earth.
The closer I got to Cachoeira do Sossego, the more the anticipation built. The sound of the cascading water grew louder, and the air became cooler, carrying a refreshing mist. Finally, the waterfall revealed itself in all its glory. Cachoeira do Sossego is more than just a waterfall; it's a sanctuary. The water plunges down several tiers of rock, creating a mesmerizing display of nature's power and artistry. The large pool at the base invited me for a swim, and I happily obliged, the cool water washing away any lingering fatigue from the hike.
After spending a blissful time at Cachoeira do Sossego, soaking in the sun on the warm rocks and letting the water rejuvenate my senses, I continued my journey towards Salão das Areias Coloridas. This was a completely different experience, a shift from the aquatic to the terrestrial, from the dynamic to the still. The Salão das Areias Coloridas, or the Hall of Colored Sands, is a testament to nature's artistry, showcasing a palette of colors that seem almost unreal.

The area is made up of gigantic rocks forming tunnels and caves, with stones and sandstone in decomposition. The sands come in varied tones of pink, white, red, green, yellow and even lilac. It's a feast for the eyes, and I spent a good amount of time simply wandering through the caverns, marveling at the intricate patterns and hues. I learned that the colored sands were once a source of income for local artisans, who used them to create beautiful crafts. However, now, to preserve the beauty, the extraction of the sand is prohibited.
It was fascinating to learn about the geological processes that led to the formation of these colored sands. The different minerals present in the rocks, combined with the effects of erosion and time, have created this unique spectacle. It reminded me of the work I do back in Delft, understanding and harnessing the power of natural resources for sustainable energy. Here, in Chapada Diamantina, nature is the ultimate engineer, creating wonders that inspire awe and respect.
As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, I made my way back to Lençóis, my heart full of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Before heading back to my guesthouse, I decided to stop by Quinca's Botequim, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and friendly vibe. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I enjoyed a refreshing drink, chatted with some locals, and listened to the lively music that filled the air.

The bar was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all drawn to its welcoming ambiance. I struck up a conversation with a local artisan who told me stories of the region. It was a reminder of the importance of connecting with the local culture and supporting the community. I also learned that there's an adventure race happening nearby, the Malacara Race, which is drawing adventure racers from all over the world. It’s inspiring to see how this region is becoming a hub for both ecotourism and adventure sports.
As I sipped my drink, I thought about Jan and Amina. I missed them dearly, but I also knew that this solo journey was something I needed to do for myself. It was a chance to reconnect with my own spirit, to find clarity and inspiration in the midst of nature's grandeur. I made a mental note to share all my experiences with them, to inspire them to embrace their own adventures, whether big or small.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Waterfall Buracão and the Museu do Garimpeiro. I'm excited to see what new wonders await me, what new lessons I will learn from this incredible landscape. But for now, I'm content to bask in the memories of today, the serenity of Cachoeira do Sossego, the vibrant colors of Salão das Areias Coloridas, and the warmth of the local community at Quinca's Botequim.
Before heading back, I made sure to jot down a few notes in my travel journal. It's a practice I've come to cherish, a way to capture the essence of each day and to preserve the memories for years to come. As I wrote, I realized that this journey is not just about seeing new places; it's about seeing myself in a new light, about discovering the strength and resilience that lies within.
And as I prepared for bed, I couldn't help but smile. I know that I forgot to pack sunscreen, and I still need to get a travel guidebook of Brazil, but these are minor details in the grand scheme of things. What truly matters is the experience, the connection, and the memories that I'm creating along the way. And with that, I closed my eyes, ready to embrace another day of adventure in Chapada Diamantina.
The night in Lençóis was peaceful. The sounds of nature lulled me to sleep, and I drifted off dreaming of waterfalls and colored sands. I am already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures, where I plan to explore the impressive Waterfall Buracão and delve into the region's history at the Museu do Garimpeiro. I am sure it will be another enriching day in this beautiful corner of Brazil.
