Adieu, Chapada Diamantina!

As my solo journey through the heart of Brazil's Chapada Diamantina National Park draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment, of having challenged myself and immersed deeply in the wonders of nature. But there's also a pang of sadness, a reluctance to leave behind the towering cliffs, the thundering waterfalls, and the profound sense of peace that this place has offered. My soul feels refreshed, ready to return to Delft, and share my experiences with Jan and Amina.

My final day in Chapada Diamantina began as all the others had – with the sounds of nature serenading me awake. I enjoyed a simple breakfast amidst the park's tranquil ambiance, savoring the last moments of solitude before venturing out for a day of exploration. The plan was to visit two more waterfalls, Cachoeira Ferro Doido and Cachoeira da Lage, and to pick up some local cheese at Lá de Minas before my final dinner here.

Cachoeira Ferro Doido, which translates to 'Crazy Iron Waterfall,' was first on the agenda. The name itself sparked my curiosity, and the reality exceeded all expectations. Located near Morro do Chapéu, the falls are easily accessible and the views are nothing short of breathtaking. The waterfall features multiple cascades plunging into a deep canyon, creating a spectacle of raw, untamed beauty. The sound of the water crashing against the rocks was both deafening and soothing, a reminder of nature's immense power.

I spent a good hour simply sitting on a rock, mesmerized by the falls. The canyon walls were adorned with lush greenery, and I spotted several orchids clinging to the rocks. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and wildflowers. It was the perfect spot for meditation, a chance to quiet my mind and absorb the energy of the surroundings. I thought about my work back in Delft, the complexities of renewable energy projects, and how this journey had given me a new perspective.

Sometimes, the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in nature.

Next on the list was Cachoeira da Lage, located closer to Lençóis. This waterfall was a different experience altogether. Unlike the dramatic Ferro Doido, Cachoeira da Lage exuded a sense of serenity and tranquility. The water flowed gently over the rocks, creating a series of small pools perfect for a refreshing dip. The surrounding vegetation was lush and vibrant, with ferns and mosses covering every surface. The sunlight filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the water.

I couldn't resist taking a swim in one of the pools. The water was cool and invigorating, washing away the last traces of fatigue. I floated on my back, gazing up at the sky through the canopy of leaves. It was a moment of pure bliss, a feeling of being completely at one with nature. It was experiences like this that made the journey worthwhile, the moments of simple joy that would stay with me long after I returned home.

After drying off and changing, I decided to visit Lá de Minas - queijos especiais, a local cheese shop in Igatu. I had heard about the artisanal cheeses produced in the region, and I was eager to try some. The shop was charming, with a rustic decor and a display case filled with a variety of cheeses. The owner was friendly and knowledgeable, offering me samples of different types. I ended up buying a selection of cheeses to take back home, a taste of Chapada Diamantina to share with Jan and Amina.

For lunch, I had planned to visit Restaurante Sabor da Serra. The place is known for its authentic Bahian dishes made from local ingredients. I decided to try the Moqueca de Cajú, a flavorful cashew stew which was a delightful explosion of flavors. The cashews added a creamy texture and a subtle sweetness to the dish, while the spices provided a warm and inviting aroma. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey through Chapada Diamantina.

As the sun began to set, I found myself reflecting on the past fifteen days. I had seen so much, experienced so much, and learned so much about myself. I had hiked through canyons, swam in waterfalls, explored caves, and climbed mountains. I had met interesting people, tasted delicious food, and immersed myself in the local culture. But more importantly, I had reconnected with nature and found a sense of peace and mindfulness that had been missing from my life.

This trip was exactly what I needed. It was a chance to escape the pressures of work and the demands of daily life, to reconnect with my passions, and to rediscover my sense of adventure. It was a reminder that life is about more than just achieving goals and meeting expectations, that it's also about savoring the moment, appreciating the beauty of the world, and connecting with something larger than ourselves.

I thought about Jan and Amina back in Delft. I missed them dearly, but I knew that this trip had made me a better wife and mother. I would return home refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to embrace the challenges and joys of family life.

Before heading back to my accommodation for my final dinner in the park, I decided to take one last walk through Lençóis. The town was bustling with activity, as tourists and locals alike filled the streets. The air was filled with music and laughter, and the scent of grilled meat wafted from the restaurants. I paused for a moment to watch a group of children playing soccer in the town square. Their energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and I couldn't help but smile.

For my final dinner, I opted for a quiet meal at my lodging within Chapada Diamantina National Park. It was a simple affair, but the food was delicious and the company was even better. I chatted with the owner of the guesthouse, sharing stories and experiences from my travels. He was a kind and generous man, with a deep love for the region and a passion for sustainable tourism. His words resonated with me, reinforcing my commitment to responsible travel and cultural sensitivity.

As I packed my bags for the journey back to Salvador tomorrow, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had and the memories I've created. Chapada Diamantina had exceeded all my expectations, offering a blend of adventure, serenity, and cultural immersion that I will never forget. I am bringing back not only photographs and souvenirs, but also a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Tomorrow marks the end of this chapter, but it also signifies the beginning of a new one. I'm excited to return to Delft, to share my stories and insights with Jan and Amina, and to incorporate the lessons I've learned into my daily life. The spirit of Chapada Diamantina will stay with me, inspiring me to live more mindfully, to embrace new challenges, and to seek out beauty in the everyday.

Thank you, Chapada Diamantina, for an unforgettable journey. Until we meet again!

I'm already looking forward to planning my next adventure, perhaps exploring other hidden gems in Brazil or venturing to new corners of the world. The possibilities are endless, and the world is waiting to be discovered.

But for now, it's time to rest and prepare for the journey home. Goodnight, Chapada Diamantina. You will be missed.

And to all my readers, thank you for following along on this incredible adventure. Stay tuned for more travel stories and insights from around the world!

Until next time,
