Chasing Waterfalls and Finding Myself

Today was a day of quiet contemplation and natural beauty, a perfect blend that allowed me to reflect on my journey so far. Leaving the vibrant energy of Lençóis behind, I ventured deeper into the heart of Chapada Diamantina National Park, seeking the solace of cascading waters and the wisdom of ancient landscapes. It was a day to breathe, to listen, and to simply be present in the moment.

The day began with a simple breakfast amidst the sounds of the park coming alive. The birds were especially vocal this morning, their songs a cheerful accompaniment to my coffee and fresh fruit. I savored the quiet moments before setting off for Roncador, eager to discover the hidden pools and serene atmosphere I had heard so much about. I made sure to pack some extra snacks, remembering my oversight with the sunscreen and travel guidebook – lessons learned from previous adventures!

The journey to Roncador was an adventure in itself. The drive took us through winding roads, each turn revealing stunning vistas of the park's iconic plateaus and valleys. As we approached the Vila do Remanso, I learned that this community is also the gateway to Marimbus, known as the 'mini Pantanal' of Chapada Diamantina. We left the car and the adventure continued by canoe along the Santo Antônio River, drifting toward the Roncador River. It was so peaceful gliding along the water, surrounded by lush vegetation and the sounds of nature. It felt a world away from the hustle and bustle of Delft. I was in awe of the untouched beauty all around me.

Finally, we arrived at Roncador. The river was a series of natural pools and gentle waterfalls, perfect for a refreshing dip. The water was cool and clear, a welcome contrast to the warm Bahia sun. I spent hours exploring the different pools, each one offering a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape. The sunlight danced on the water's surface, creating shimmering patterns that seemed to shift and change with the breeze. I could have stayed there forever, lost in the beauty of the moment.

Sometimes, the greatest journeys are not about where you go, but who you become along the way.

After Roncador, it was time to visit Cachoeira do Samuel. The trek to the falls was moderately challenging, taking us through varied terrain, including a stretch along what I learned was the old mining road connecting Andaraí and Lençóis. It was fascinating to imagine the area's history as a diamond mining center, and the lives of the people who once worked these lands. The trail wound through lush vegetation, with occasional glimpses of the surrounding landscape. The anticipation grew with each step, fueled by the sound of the cascading water growing louder as we approached.

And then, there it was – Cachoeira do Samuel. The waterfall was a majestic cascade of water, plunging down from a height of about 100 meters into a refreshing pool below. The sheer power and beauty of the falls were breathtaking. I took some time to simply sit and absorb the view, feeling the spray of the water on my face and the energy of the natural world all around me. It was a moment of profound peace and connection, a reminder of the importance of preserving these natural treasures.

Before heading back to Lençóis, I stopped by Miscelania, a charming little shop I had spotted earlier in the day. It was filled with an eclectic mix of local crafts, clothing, and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for Jan and Amina, wanting to bring back a piece of Chapada Diamantina for them to enjoy. The shop owner was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the local community and the challenges of running a small business in a remote area. It was a reminder of the importance of supporting local economies and sustainable tourism.

For lunch, I enjoyed a delightful meal at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. The restaurant is known for its innovative dishes that highlight the flavors of the region. I decided to try the Surubim (catfish) with vegetables and lemon sicilian baked in banana leaves, which was absolutely delicious. The restaurant's commitment to using local ingredients and supporting sustainable agriculture resonated with my values, making the meal even more enjoyable. Sabor da Serra recently won third place in Bahia's Moqueca competition - and I can see why! It was a wonderful experience that truly captured the essence of Chapada Diamantina.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the experiences of the day. The quiet beauty of Roncador, the majestic power of Cachoeira do Samuel, the charm of Miscelania, and the flavors of Restaurante Sabor da Serra – each contributed to a rich and fulfilling day. It was a day of connection – to nature, to history, and to myself. It was a day that reminded me of the importance of slowing down, of appreciating the simple things, and of seeking out moments of peace and reflection.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore Trilha do Ribeirão do Meio and Cachoeira Dos Funis. I'm especially looking forward to Trilha do Ribeirão do Meio, I've heard it's a beautiful trail with unique rock formations and crystal-clear waters. And perhaps afterwards, I'll stop at Budha Bar - Restaurante na Chapada Diamantina - Vale do Capão for a relaxing drink.

Back at the park, I settle in for the night, the sounds of the Chapada serenading me to sleep. I feel grateful for this journey, for the opportunity to explore such a beautiful and unique part of the world, and for the chance to reconnect with nature and with myself. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that there are still so many more adventures to come.

Chapada Diamantina, you continue to amaze me. I'm so grateful to be here.
