Day 1: Embracing the Wonders of Chapada Diamantina
My journey into the heart of Chapada Diamantina National Park began today, and what a start it has been! Leaving behind the familiar comfort of Delft for a solo adventure is always a mix of excitement and trepidation. But as I set foot in this Brazilian paradise, I knew I was in for something truly special. The air is fresh, carrying the scent of earth and adventure, a stark contrast to the cityscapes I'm used to. Today was all about immersing myself in the natural beauty and local culture of this incredible place, and I can't wait to share it all with you.
The day started with a simple breakfast amidst the sounds of nature, fueling up for a day of exploration. My first stop was the Gruta do Lapão, a cave that promised a bit of adventure. The journey there was an experience in itself, a 7km drive from Lençóis. The last stretch of the drive turned into a bumpy ride on a dirt road that led us to the trailhead. I was definitely thankful for the sturdy rental car I had acquired. The trail to the cave wound through landscapes marked by the remnants of diamond mining, a poignant reminder of the region's history. The vegetation, much of it having sprung up after the mining era, painted a vivid picture of resilience and rebirth.
As I approached the Gruta do Lapão, I was struck by its imposing entrance. The cave's mouth, a staggering 42 meters high and 64 meters wide, is said to be the largest sandstone cave entrance in Brazil. It felt like stepping into another world. Inside, the temperature dropped noticeably, offering a welcome respite from the Bahian sun. The path through the cave was marked, guiding me over rocks and through shallow streams. The play of light and shadow on the cave walls created an ethereal atmosphere, highlighting the unique rock formations. I even switched off my flashlight for a moment to experience the utter darkness, accompanied only by the sound of dripping water – a truly humbling experience.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering the highest peaks, but in discovering the hidden depths within ourselves and the world around us.
Emerging from the Gruta do Lapão, I felt invigorated and ready for the next adventure: Ribeirão do Meio. This natural water slide, located not far from Lençóis, is a local favorite and a must-visit for anyone seeking a bit of fun. The hike to Ribeirão do Meio was a pleasant 45-minute walk from the center of Lençóis, much of it shaded by trees. The trail meandered through historical paths altered by diamond mining, offering glimpses into the area's past. It was fascinating to see how nature had reclaimed these spaces, softening the harsh edges of human intervention.
Ribeirão do Meio itself is a natural water park, with a large natural pool and a smooth rock slide that sends you careening into the refreshing water. I watched as locals and tourists alike took turns sliding down, their laughter echoing through the valley. Gathering my courage, I decided to give it a try. The initial rush of cold water was a shock, but the thrill of the slide was exhilarating. I emerged from the pool with a grin, feeling like a kid again. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – the chance to let go, embrace the unexpected, and connect with the simple joys of life.

After a day of exploring, I decided to indulge in a delicious lunch at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. The restaurant offered a stunning view of the surrounding landscape, and the food was a delightful mix of local and international flavors. I savored a traditional Bahian dish, moqueca de camarão, a flavorful seafood stew cooked in coconut milk and palm oil. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of hiking and swimming.

With the afternoon sun casting long shadows, I decided to explore the local shops in Lençóis. I stumbled upon Empório Chapada Diamantina, a charming store that curates regional products. The shop was a treasure trove of colors, scents, and flavors. I found aromatic soaps from Vale do Capão, specialty coffees hand-cultivated in the Piatã mountains, and organic foods like Mel Flor Nativa, sourced from the virgin forests of the national park. It was a delight to see so much local talent and craftsmanship on display.

I picked up a few souvenirs for Jan and Amina, some coffee and a small jar of local honey. I also couldn't resist buying a travel journal, its pages just begging to be filled with the stories of my adventures. Supporting local businesses is important to me, and Empório Chapada Diamantina made it easy to do so. I also found a book about the local legends, geology, history and biodiversity, which I hope to read during my stay here.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I had. From the depths of Gruta do Lapão to the exhilarating slide at Ribeirão do Meio, and the local treasures at Empório Chapada Diamantina, today was a testament to the beauty and diversity of Chapada Diamantina. I am staying in a local eco-lodge, and after dinner I sat outside for a while, enjoying the sounds of the night. The sky was clear, and the stars were out in full force. I felt a sense of peace and contentment wash over me, grateful for the opportunity to explore this remarkable place.
Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Cachoeira da Fumaça and Morro do Pai Inácio, two more iconic landmarks of Chapada Diamantina. I might also check out Catingueiro Brew Pub in the evening. I am looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for whatever tomorrow may bring. Until then, boa noite from Chapada Diamantina!
P.S. I really need to remember to buy sunscreen. I knew I forgot something!
