Finding My Way to Assisi's Soul

After a long journey from Brampton, with a stopover in Rome, Moses and I finally arrived in Assisi. I was so excited to finally be in this beautiful, spiritual town. The journey itself was an experience, trading the familiar Toronto skyline for the rolling hills of the Italian countryside. I felt a sense of anticipation building as the train pulled into the station, and I knew our 12-day adventure was about to begin.

Our first stop was Fontebella, our hotel for the next twelve days. Settling into our room, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude. The Fontebella is perfectly situated, offering a charming blend of comfort and convenience, with the promise of being our home away from home as we explore Assisi's cultural and historical treasures.

After settling in, we decided to start exploring, and what better place to begin than the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi? I had read so much about it, seen so many pictures, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer magnificence of the place.

The Basilica is not just one church, but two – the Upper and Lower Basilicas – built one on top of the other. We started in the Upper Basilica, and the moment I stepped inside, I was overwhelmed by the vibrant frescoes that adorned every wall and ceiling. The stories of Saint Francis came to life before my eyes, painted by masters like Giotto. The light streaming through the stained-glass windows cast a kaleidoscope of colors, creating an atmosphere of reverence and awe.

To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the key to everything.

The Lower Basilica was a stark contrast, more somber and intimate. Here, the tomb of Saint Francis rests, a simple stone sarcophagus that draws pilgrims from all over the world. I knelt for a moment, offering a silent prayer, feeling a deep connection to the saint and his message of peace and humility. It was a profoundly moving experience, one that I will carry with me long after we leave Assisi.

After the Basilica, we strolled through the Piazza del Comune, the heart of Assisi. The square was bustling with activity. I could hear snippets of conversations in various languages and the laughter of children playing. The architecture was stunning, a mix of Roman and medieval influences. The Temple of Minerva, with its well-preserved Roman columns, stood proudly, a testament to the town's rich history. We paused for a moment, taking in the scene, feeling the pulse of Assisi.

Lunch at Ristorante il Frantoio was a delightful experience. The restaurant is known for its creative Umbrian-inspired dishes, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The food was delicious, and the service impeccable. Moses enjoyed a glass of local wine while I savored the delicate flavors of the pasta. The restaurant was away from the main tourist area, offering a peaceful escape and a stunning view of the valley. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing our exploration. I made a mental note to try to replicate some of the dishes back home in Brampton. I am sure my daughter, Hope, would love them.

Next on our list was the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Assisi, another gem in the Piazza del Comune. This church is unique because it was built inside a Roman temple dedicated to Minerva, the goddess of wisdom. The ancient Roman columns still stand, creating a fascinating juxtaposition of pagan and Christian elements. Inside, the church was beautiful, with ornate decorations and a sense of tranquility. I learned that the temple was used as a prison in the 13th century before being restored as a church. It’s amazing how this building has transformed through the ages, serving so many different purposes.

Before dinner, we did some shopping at Assisi Jewels. I was looking for a small memento of our trip, and I found a beautiful silver pendant with an image of Saint Francis. It was simple and elegant, and I knew it would be a meaningful reminder of our time in Assisi. Moses bought a small wooden cross, a symbol of his faith and a reminder of the spiritual significance of our journey. I know he will treasure it. He is not as sentimental as I am, but I know he appreciates the meaning behind the objects.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Trattoria Da Erminio for dinner. This restaurant was recommended to us by several locals, and it did not disappoint. The trattoria exuded a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. We started with some local appetizers, bruschetta topped with fresh tomatoes and basil, and then indulged in the grilled lamb, cooked to perfection. The flavors were rich and authentic, a true taste of Umbria. The service was warm and friendly, making us feel like part of the family. It reminded me of the small, family-run restaurants back in Kyenjojo, where the food is made with love and tradition.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll back to our hotel, soaking in the atmosphere of Assisi at night. The streets were quiet, the buildings bathed in soft light. I felt a sense of peace and contentment. Assisi had already cast its spell on us, and I knew that the next eleven days would be filled with more discoveries and spiritual awakenings.

La Fortezza Restaurant, where we had breakfast, was conveniently located, with friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere. The breakfast was simple but satisfying, fueling us up for a day of exploration. I appreciated the personal touch, the care and attention that went into every detail. It felt like a home away from home, a place where we could relax and recharge. I am so glad we chose this place for our stay in Assisi.

As I sit here now, writing in my journal, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible day. Assisi has exceeded all my expectations, and I am excited to see what tomorrow brings. We plan to visit Eremo delle Carceri and Mount Subasio. I am looking forward to the tranquility of the hermitage and the panoramic views from the mountain. I have a feeling that tomorrow will be another day filled with spiritual and cultural enrichment.

Before drifting off to sleep, I take out my Italian phrasebook – one of the items I had forgotten to pack. I try to memorize a few phrases for tomorrow. I am determined to immerse myself in the local culture and connect with the people of Assisi on a deeper level. It is a small gesture, but I believe it is important to show respect and appreciation for the local customs and traditions. It is something I have always valued, and I want to pass on this value to my children and grandchildren.

Tomorrow, we venture beyond the city walls to Eremo delle Carceri and Mount Subasio, a change of pace that I am looking forward to. I am eager to explore the natural beauty surrounding Assisi and to experience the serenity of the hermitage. Perhaps, I will find some inspiration for my community work back in Brampton. I am always looking for ways to bring people together and to foster a sense of belonging. Maybe, Assisi will offer me some new insights and ideas.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and today, Moses and I took that step into the heart of Assisi. I am excited to see where this journey will lead us and what lessons we will learn along the way. Goodnight from Assisi!
