Uncover the historical charm of Assisi with visits to Palazzo Bernabei and Sala Delle Volte, enjoying local cuisine and vibrant bars.
A Day of Historical Immersion in Assisi
Today marked the final full day of our Assisi adventure, and I wanted to make the most of it. It's hard to believe our time here is coming to an end, but I'm determined to soak up every last bit of this enchanting town. Today was all about delving deeper into Assisi’s history and enjoying its local flavors.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Osteria Pozzo della Mensa. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. I savored the moment, thinking about how much I've come to appreciate these simple Italian mornings. It reminded me of the times back in Kyenjojo, Uganda, when we would wake up to the sounds of the village and the smell of my mother’s cooking. Even though the settings are different, the feeling of warmth and comfort is the same. Moses, as usual, enjoyed his cappuccino, reminiscing about his truck driving days, always finding comfort in a good cup of coffee. We shared some pastries and planned our day, eager to explore the historical sites Assisi had to offer.

First on our agenda was Palazzo Bernabei. Walking through the narrow, cobblestone streets, I felt like I was stepping back in time. The palace, designed by Giacomo Giorgetti, exuded an aura of history and grandeur. As we approached, I couldn’t help but admire the architecture, a blend of Renaissance elegance and Umbrian charm. The building's three stories surrounded a central courtyard adorned with columns and arches. Inside, the frescoes and sculptures told stories of a bygone era. I learned that the palace had been owned by Bishop Sperelli's heirs and later became home to the Franciscan Museum. It was fascinating to imagine the lives of those who had walked these halls centuries ago.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.
Wandering through the palace, I couldn't help but think about Hope. She would have loved this place. She always had a keen interest in historical narratives. I made a mental note to bring her here someday. I imagined her excitement as she examined each artifact and learned about the palace's rich history. It's these shared experiences that I cherish the most, the moments when we can connect with our heritage and learn something new together.
After immersing ourselves in the elegance of Palazzo Bernabei, we ventured to Sala Delle Volte. This vast subterranean space, located beneath the Piazza del Comune, was truly captivating. The rugged arches made of Assisi stone created a unique and attractive atmosphere. As I walked through the ancient space, I couldn't help but marvel at the engineering feat. It was remarkable to think that this space had once been part of the ancient Roman floor, connecting me to a history that stretched back millennia.

For lunch, we decided to try Ristorante Pizzeria Monte Frumentario Nuova Gestione 2024. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance, and the aroma of freshly baked pizza filled the air. We ordered a Margherita pizza and a pasta dish, eager to taste the local flavors. The pizza was delicious, with a crispy crust and flavorful toppings. Moses enjoyed a glass of local wine, while I savored the pasta, reminiscing about the flavors of home. The meal was simple but satisfying, a perfect way to recharge after a morning of exploration.

In the late afternoon, we decided to unwind at Bar Trovellesi. Located in Piazza del Comune, the bar offered a lively atmosphere and a chance to soak in the local culture. We ordered some drinks and sat outside, watching the world go by. The bar had a charming ambiance, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. As I sipped my drink, I couldn't help but reflect on our time in Assisi. It had been a journey filled with history, culture, and delicious food. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this enchanting town and connect with its rich heritage.

As evening approached, we made our way to Ristorante Bar San Francesco for dinner. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of local specialties. We ordered lamb and risotto, eager to taste the flavors of Umbria. The lamb was tender and flavorful, while the risotto was creamy and delicious. The meal was a perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery.

Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, savoring the last moments of our Assisi adventure. The streets were quiet and peaceful, and the stars twinkled above us. As I walked hand in hand with Moses, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude. Our time in Assisi had been a journey of discovery, a chance to connect with history and culture, and an opportunity to create lasting memories.
Looking ahead, it’s a little bittersweet knowing that tomorrow marks the end of our trip. There's no specific itinerary planned, as it’s simply our travel day back home. We'll be taking the train to Rome and then flying back to Toronto. I’m already anticipating the familiar comforts of home in Brampton and sharing our stories with Hope. But I know a part of me will always remain in this beautiful, spiritual town. Assisi has left an indelible mark on my soul, and I will carry its lessons with me always.
I know that the experiences and memories we have gathered here will stay with us for a lifetime. It's these moments of connection and discovery that make travel so rewarding. And as we prepare to leave Assisi, I feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced this enchanting town and connect with its rich heritage. I'm excited to share our stories with Hope and inspire her to embark on her own adventures. Perhaps one day, we'll return to Assisi together, and she can experience the magic of this special place for herself. Until then, I will cherish the memories we have made and carry the spirit of Assisi with me wherever I go. As we prepare to leave, I am reminded of the words of St. Augustine: The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
