Mývatn's Embrace: A Day of Icelandic Wonders
Today was a symphony of sensory experiences, a deep dive into the heart of Iceland's Mývatn region. From the gentle rhythm of farm life to the stark beauty of volcanic landscapes and the comforting warmth of local hospitality, Mývatn offered a day that resonated with the soul. Come along as I recount our day, filled with unique flavors and unforgettable sights.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi, nestled within the Mývatn Nature Baths. The café offered a selection of baked goods and soups, including vegan options. I decided on smoked trout on bread, which was delicious. The crumbly, slightly sweet bread that Icelanders enjoy paired perfectly with the smoky, savory notes and the velvety texture of the fish. Maximilian enjoyed a hearty bowl of goulash soup. Astrid, of course, opted for a cinnamon bun, which she declared was the best she’d ever had. The cafe was clean and offered plenty of seating.

After breakfast, we ventured to Vogafjós Farm Resort, a place where the charm of rural Iceland truly comes to life. This family-run guesthouse is set against the backdrop of Lake Mývatn, offering a unique opportunity to connect with nature and experience farm life firsthand. As we approached, the scent of fresh air mingled with earthy undertones, a promise of the authentic experience that awaited us. Vogafjós is more than just a farm; it's an immersive experience that touches all the senses.

One of the highlights was, undoubtedly, meeting the cows. Astrid's eyes lit up as she watched the cows being milked. The resort has windows looking into the dairy, so you can watch cows getting milked in their stalls. It was a moment of pure joy, a simple connection with the animals that sustain us. The farm setting was very sweet. The decor of the cabin/dining area was cozy. The vista of sheep grazing, plus seeing their dairy cows get milked/tended to while overlooking the acreage, was very cool.
Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from the simplest of encounters, like watching a cow being milked or savoring a meal made with ingredients sourced just steps away.
After our farm visit, we decided to explore the vast expanse of Lake Myvatn itself. The lake, formed over 2,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption, is a haven for birdlife and offers stunning landscapes that seem to stretch on forever. The Mývatn area is rich with natural attractions and activities. We drove along the lake's perimeter, stopping at various viewpoints to take in the scenery. The views were stunning. The lake is known for its birdlife, including migrating waterfowl and the iconic whooper swans.

For lunch, we stopped at Bistro Sel & Pizza, linked to the Sel Hotel Mývatn. The bistro offers a warm and welcoming ambiance, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I chose the pan-fried trout, seasoned well and super tasty. Maximilian went with a pizza, which he enjoyed. Astrid devoured a portion of ice cream. The restaurant features local produce and specialties that highlight the flavors of Iceland.

As evening approached, we made our way to Eldey Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant highlights local Icelandic ingredients, traditional flavors, and fresh dishes. The cosy atmosphere of this place makes customers feel relaxed and have a nice time. I opted for the Arctic charr, sourced from Húsavík. The lamb and beef are from North Iceland and Eyjafjörður. All the fresh vegetables and fruits are from nearby farms in Hveravellir, grown in geothermally heated greenhouses and Vallarnes which grows organic products. Maximilian chose the lamb, which was cooked to perfection. The service was absolutely lovely and accommodating for food restrictions.

To cap off the evening, we decided to visit the bar at Fosshotel Mývatn. The bar offers a selection of Icelandic craft beers, wines, cocktails, and premium spirits, as well as light bites and snacks. The bar is a cozy place to unwind and refuel after a day of exploring in North Iceland. Fosshotel Mývatn presents a stylish and contemporary restaurant with a beautiful view over lake Mývatn. The building is clad with larch wood and grass roof which makes it in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature. As I sipped on an Icelandic craft beer, I reflected on the day's adventures. Astrid enjoyed a glass of apple juice, while Maximilian savored a glass of wine. The bar offers a cozy and relaxing atmosphere.

Mývatn has a tranquil and soothing ambiance. The memory of the day spent in Mývatn will stay with me for years to come. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Skútustaðagígar and The Fly Lands. I am looking forward to seeing the Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters. After that, we plan to have breakfast at Mylla Restaurant, lunch at Fish and Chips Lake Mývatn, and dinner at Vogafjós Farm Resort. We also plan to visit the Handicrafts Market.
