A Day of Volcanic Landscapes and Local Delights

Today felt like stepping into another world, a testament to Iceland's incredible geological diversity. The Myvatn region continues to surprise and enchant us with its unique blend of fire and ice. From exploring peculiar volcanic formations to savoring local flavors, it was a day of discovery and appreciation for this extraordinary corner of the world.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mylla Restaurant. Maximilian and Astrid were particularly excited about trying the local rye bread, and I enjoyed a strong cup of coffee to prepare for the day's adventures. The restaurant itself is modern and inviting, and it’s clear they take inspiration from the surrounding landscape. Fuelled and ready, we set off to explore the Skútustaðagígar pseudo-craters.

Skútustaðagígar: A Walk Among Rootless Wonders

The Skútustaðagígar pseudo-craters were our first stop, and they didn't disappoint. As we approached the area, the landscape transformed into a field of gentle, bowl-shaped hills, each one a testament to the powerful forces that shaped this region. These aren't true volcanic craters but were formed around 2,300 years ago when hot lava flowed over wetlands, causing gas explosions. The steam that was created below the surface of the lava resulted in the creation of these unique pseudo-craters.

We took a leisurely walk along the marked paths, the fresh air invigorating us as we admired the panoramic views of Lake Myvatn. Astrid was fascinated by the sheep grazing on the grassy slopes, and Maximilian, ever the photographer, captured the stunning scenery. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, and we spotted several species of waterfowl. It was a peaceful and awe-inspiring experience, a reminder of the raw beauty of Iceland's natural landscapes.

The earth has music for those who listen.

The Intriguing Landscape of The Fly Lands

Next on our list was a visit to The Fly Lands. I must admit, the name gave me pause, especially after reading about the notorious midges of Myvatn. Thankfully, the flies weren't too bothersome today, perhaps due to the slightly cooler weather. The Fly Lands, also known as Námaskarðsvegur, turned out to be an extraordinary sight.

The area is characterized by its otherworldly geothermal landscape, complete with bubbling mud pools and steaming vents. The ground was a kaleidoscope of colors, from bright yellows and oranges to deep reds and browns, a result of the sulfur and mineral deposits. The air was thick with the smell of sulfur, a constant reminder of the volcanic activity simmering beneath the surface. Astrid was a bit apprehensive at first, but she soon became fascinated by the bubbling mud and the hissing steam vents. We made sure to keep a safe distance, as the ground can be unstable and the steam extremely hot. It was like walking on another planet, a stark contrast to the serene beauty of the pseudo-craters.

Discovering Local Treasures at the Handicrafts Market

After our geothermal adventure, we decided to explore the local Handicrafts Market in Reykjahlíð. I was eager to find some authentic Icelandic souvenirs, and the market didn't disappoint. We browsed through a charming selection of traditional woolen sweaters (lopapeysa), handcrafted jewelry, and unique artisanal crafts.

I was particularly drawn to the intricate patterns of the woolen sweaters, each one telling a story of Icelandic nature and heritage. Astrid picked out a small, hand-carved wooden puffin, while Maximilian admired the craftsmanship of the local pottery. We chatted with some of the artisans, learning about their techniques and the inspiration behind their creations. It was a wonderful way to support the local community and take home a piece of Icelandic culture.

A Taste of Local Flavors: Fish and Chips Lake Mývatn and Farm-to-Table Dining

For lunch, we stopped at Fish and Chips Lake Mývatn. This family-owned takeaway place is known for its delicious, freshly caught fish and crispy chips. We enjoyed our meal with a view of the lake, the perfect way to refuel after a busy morning. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the chips were perfectly golden and crispy. Astrid, a usually picky eater, devoured her portion with gusto.

As evening approached, we made our way to Vogafjós Farm Resort for dinner. This unique restaurant is located inside a cowshed, offering a truly farm-to-table dining experience. While enjoying our meal, we could watch the cows being milked through a glass window. It was a novel and educational experience for Astrid, who was fascinated by the gentle giants.

The menu featured homemade local specialties, such as smoked trout, lamb shanks, and mozzarella made from the farm's own milk. I opted for the lamb shank, which was tender and flavorful, while Maximilian enjoyed the beef burger made with local beef. We also tried the homemade Geysir rye bread, baked in the ground using geothermal heat. It was a delicious and authentic taste of Iceland.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures. The Myvatn region had once again captivated us with its unique landscapes and warm hospitality. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Sulfuric smoker and relax at the Forest Lagoon. I’m particularly excited about the Forest Lagoon, as a relaxing soak will be the perfect way to unwind. I’m also looking forward to trying Daddi's Pizza for lunch.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped by the Vogafjós boutique, filled with local products. I picked up a jar of homemade jam, while Astrid chose a small, woolen sheep as a reminder of our visit to the farm. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

As we drove back, the setting sun cast a golden glow over the landscape, painting the pseudo-craters and lava fields in warm hues. It was a scene of serene beauty, a reminder of the magic that Iceland holds. Back in Berlin, I'll be sure to share some of the handicrafts we purchased today, and I'll try my hand at recreating the Geysir rye bread – though I suspect it won't taste quite the same without the geothermal heat! Perhaps Maximilian can engineer a miniature volcano in our backyard… though I suspect our neighbors might have something to say about that.

Visiting the Mývatn Nature Baths is also on the cards for tomorrow; I accidentally forgot to pack our swimwear, so I’ll need to buy some tomorrow before we head off. I’m sure Astrid will enjoy the warm waters, and it will be a great way to relax after another day of exploring. I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow brings, knowing that Iceland will continue to surprise and delight us with its natural wonders.

I am constantly reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I hope that my stories inspire others to seek out their own adventures, to embrace the unknown, and to appreciate the beauty of our planet.
