A Fond Farewell to Mývatn

As our Icelandic saga in the Mývatn region draws to a close, today was a bittersweet symphony of reflection and last-minute exploration. It's hard to believe our eleven days here are already over; it feels like just yesterday we were marveling at the pseudo-craters and braving the Dimmuborgir lava fields. This morning, as I sipped my coffee, I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness mixed with immense gratitude for the experiences we've shared as a family in this otherworldly landscape.

We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi. Located within the Mývatn Nature Baths, it was the perfect spot to fuel up while enjoying one last view of the lagoon. I opted for the traditional geyser bread with smoked arctic char, a local delicacy I've grown quite fond of. Maximilian enjoyed a robust coffee, and Astrid, of course, chose a cinnamon bun. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of the day ahead lifted our spirits.

Our first stop was at Selfoss, though not to be confused with the town in South Iceland. This Selfoss is one of the stunning waterfalls on the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum in the north of Iceland. As we approached, the roar of the water grew louder, and the mist kissed our faces. It's not the tallest waterfall, standing at only 11 meters, but its width is impressive, stretching about 100 meters. The sheer volume of water cascading over the edge was mesmerizing, and Astrid was absolutely thrilled, pointing and chattering about the 'big splashy water'. Maximilian, ever the photographer, captured some incredible shots, despite the constant spray.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the Mývatn Research Station. As a translator with a keen interest in cultural anthropology, I was particularly excited about this. The station has been a hub for scientific studies of the lake's unique ecosystem since 1975. It was fascinating to learn about the ongoing research into the lake's biology, from the diverse bird species to the microscopic organisms that thrive in its waters. I even had a brief chat with one of the researchers about the challenges of preserving this delicate environment in the face of increasing tourism. Maximilian, with his software engineering background, was intrigued by the data collection and analysis methods they employ. Astrid, surprisingly, was captivated by the microscopes, peering through them with wide-eyed wonder at the tiny creatures inhabiting the lake.

For lunch, we decided to try Eldey Restaurant at Hotel Laxá. The restaurant prides itself on using local ingredients, and the menu was filled with tempting Icelandic specialties. I opted for the arctic char, sourced from nearby Húsavík, while Maximilian enjoyed the lamb, which came directly from farms in North Iceland. Astrid, predictably, chose the pasta, but even she admitted that the lamb was delicious. The panoramic views of Mývatn from the restaurant's windows added to the experience.

After lunch, we made a stop at Kaffi Sel and Mývatn Öl brewery. I had heard they were brewing their own beer, Mývatn öl, and I was eager to give it a try. The brewery is located within Kaffi Sel, a souvenir shop and café. While Maximilian sampled the beer, I browsed the shop, picking up a few last-minute souvenirs for friends and family back in Berlin. Astrid, of course, was more interested in the pastries, and she happily munched on a traditional Icelandic kleinur while we enjoyed the cozy atmosphere.

Our final dinner in Mývatn was at Mylla Restaurant, located in the Berjaya Mývatn Hotel. The restaurant had a charming and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a blend of Icelandic and European cuisine. We decided to indulge in a few of their specialties, savoring every bite as we reminisced about our adventures over the past ten days.

As I reflect on our time here, I realize that Mývatn has offered us more than just stunning landscapes and unique experiences. It has given us the opportunity to connect with nature, to learn about Icelandic culture, and to create lasting memories as a family. From exploring the volcanic craters to soaking in the geothermal waters, every moment has been a gift. I am reminded of a quote I once read:

Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

I know that the lessons we've learned and the memories we've made here will stay with us long after we've left. As we prepare to leave tomorrow and begin our journey back to Berlin, I feel a sense of gratitude for the time we've spent in this magical place. It's been an adventure filled with wonder, discovery, and connection, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I am especially grateful that we decided against booking a hotel and embraced the flexibility of exploring at our own pace. This allowed us to truly immerse ourselves in the Icelandic outdoors, making our experience all the more authentic.
