Arrival in Mývatn: A Land of Fire and Ice

After months of anticipation, Maximilian, Astrid, and I have finally arrived in the Mývatn region of Iceland. The drive from Reykjavik was long but incredibly scenic, with landscapes morphing from lush green pastures to stark volcanic plains. We chose to rent a car for this adventure, giving us the freedom to explore at our own pace, a decision I already feel has paid off in dividends. We're all eager to immerse ourselves in Iceland's unique blend of natural wonders.

Our first day was packed with exploration and delicious local food. The crisp Icelandic air, a stark contrast to Berlin's springtime warmth, invigorated us as we set out to discover the region's iconic sights. While I did forget the sunscreen back at our apartment in Berlin, I’m determined to make the most of every moment, and a little windburn never hurt anyone, right? I made a mental note to buy some tomorrow before we soak in the Myvatn Nature Baths [TripAdvisor, Myvatn Nature Baths].

Lake Mývatn View Point: A Breathtaking Panorama

Our initial stop was the Lake Mývatn View Point. As we drove up the winding road, the anticipation grew. Reaching the top, we were greeted by a panoramic vista that took my breath away. The vast expanse of Lake Mývatn sparkled under the clear sky, dotted with numerous small islands and surrounded by volcanic formations. The sheer scale of the landscape was humbling, and I felt an immediate connection to the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland.

Astrid, ever the curious explorer, peppered us with questions about the lake's origins and the strange formations we could see in the distance. Maximilian, armed with his camera, busily captured the stunning scenery, determined to preserve the moment. I took a deep breath, feeling the cool air fill my lungs, and savored the tranquility of the scene. It was the perfect start to our Icelandic adventure.

Breakfast at Vogafjós Farm Resort: A Taste of Iceland

After soaking in the view, our stomachs began to rumble, leading us to Vogafjós Farm Resort for breakfast. This place is truly unique; the restaurant is situated right next to the cowshed! As we enjoyed our meal, we could watch the cows through a large glass window, a novel and charming experience.

The breakfast buffet was a delightful spread of local delicacies. We sampled homemade Geysir bread, smoked trout, and various cheeses made from the farm's own milk. Everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the quality of Icelandic ingredients. Astrid was particularly fascinated by the cows and insisted on trying the fresh milk, declaring it the best she had ever tasted. I must admit, it was pretty amazing. Maximilian and I enjoyed some strong Icelandic coffee, which provided the perfect jolt of energy for the day ahead.

The beauty of Iceland lies not just in its landscapes, but in the warmth and authenticity of its people and their traditions.

Exploring Dimmuborgir Lava Fields: A Journey into Darkness

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we ventured to the Dimmuborgir Lava Fields. This area is a stark contrast to the serene lake, a landscape of jagged, otherworldly rock formations. Dimmuborgir, meaning Dark Castles, is a fitting name for this dramatic expanse of volcanic caves and towering rock pillars.

As we walked through the lava fields, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and mystery. The unique formations, created by a lava lake flowing over a marsh 2,300 years ago, resembled an ancient, collapsed citadel. Astrid was captivated by the folklore surrounding Dimmuborgir, learning about the Icelandic trolls and Yule Lads said to inhabit the area. Maximilian, meanwhile, was in his element, snapping photos of the surreal landscape from every angle.

We explored several of the caves and chambers, marveling at the sheer size and intricacy of the formations. The sunlight filtering through the gaps in the lava created an ethereal atmosphere, enhancing the sense of being in another world. The dramatic structures were used as a filming location for Game of Thrones, which added to the allure. I could almost imagine Mance Rayder's wildling camp nestled amongst the dark castles.

Lunch at Kaffi Borgir: A Quick Bite Amidst the Lava

After our exploration of Dimmuborgir, we stopped for lunch at Kaffi Borgir, a cozy restaurant located right in the heart of the lava fields. This charming café offers a variety of fast and easy options, perfect for a quick and delicious lunch. We opted for the soup buffet, which featured three different types of soup, all you can eat. It was a hearty and warming meal, ideal for the slightly chilly weather.

While enjoying our lunch, we admired the stunning views of the lava formations through the large windows. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, making it a great spot to recharge after our adventures. Kaffi Borgir also houses the Mývatn Market, a souvenir shop offering a selection of local handmade crafts and Icelandic clothing. I picked up a beautiful hand-knitted scarf as a memento of our first day, while Astrid chose a small troll figurine to remind her of the Dimmuborgir folklore. Maximilian, of course, found a postcard with a particularly striking photo of the lava fields.

Handicrafts Market: Discovering Local Treasures

Before heading to dinner, we decided to visit the Handicrafts Market in Reykjahlíð. I was eager to find an authentic Icelandic wool sweater, something to keep me warm during our explorations. The market was a treasure trove of local crafts, with vendors selling everything from woolen goods to handmade ceramics.

I found a beautiful, intricately knitted sweater in traditional Norwegian patterns, a piece that felt both authentic and unique. Astrid chose a colorful, hand-painted ceramic bird, while Maximilian admired the craftsmanship of a wooden Viking ship model. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and it felt good to purchase items that were made with care and passion.

Dinner at Daddi's Pizza: A Family Favorite

For dinner, we decided on Daddi's Pizza, a family-run pizzeria known for its delicious hand-tossed pizzas. After a day of exploring Icelandic cuisine, we were all in the mood for something a little more familiar. The pizzeria had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly.

We ordered a large pizza with a variety of toppings, including local smoked trout, a must-try in the Mývatn area. The pizza was cooked to perfection, with a crispy crust and flavorful ingredients. Astrid devoured her slices with gusto, while Maximilian and I savored the unique combination of flavors. Daddi's Pizza also offers vegan and gluten-free options, making it a great choice for those with dietary restrictions.

As we ate, we reflected on our first day in Mývatn. We had seen so much and experienced so much in just a few hours. From the breathtaking views of Lake Mývatn to the surreal landscapes of Dimmuborgir, every moment had been unforgettable. The delicious local food had been an added bonus, providing us with a taste of Icelandic culture and hospitality.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Myvatn Nature Baths and Hverir geothermal area [TripAdvisor, Myvatn Nature Baths]. I'm especially looking forward to soaking in the geothermal waters and experiencing the otherworldly landscapes of Hverir. We might even stop by Gamli Bærinn for a drink in the evening, if Astrid isn't too tired [TripAdvisor, Gamli Bærinn].

As I write this, nestled in our cozy accommodation, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore Iceland with my family. The Mývatn region has already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow will bring. I'm also determined to find some sunscreen! The Icelandic sun, combined with the cool wind, can be deceptively harsh. But even with a touch of windburn, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. This is what sustainable living is all about, living in the moment, appreciating the nature and the company around you.

I am already looking forward to sharing more of our journey with you all! The blend of relaxation and exploration is something I deeply cherish, and I am so glad to be able to pass it on to Astrid.
