Whispers of the Past, Echoes of Today

Today was a journey through time and nature, a day where the ancient whispers of Etruscan civilization met the vibrant life of Perugia's botanical garden. Lena and I set out to explore the hidden corners of this historic city, eager to uncover stories etched in stone and find solace in the embrace of nature.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bottega Dei Priori. The cozy atmosphere was the perfect way to start our explorations. I enjoyed a cappuccino and a pastry, while Lena had some yogurt with fresh fruit. It's these simple moments, sharing a quiet breakfast before a day of adventure, that I truly cherish. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the food was simple but delicious. This place comes highly recommended, and it's easy to see why. The price was very good too. I even had the opportunity to practice my Italian with the waiter, who was very patient with my attempts. It’s always a pleasure to connect with locals and immerse myself in the culture, even if it’s just through a brief conversation over coffee.

Fueled by our delicious breakfast, our first stop was the Ipogeo dei Volumni e Necropoli del Palazzone, an Etruscan tomb and necropolis that promised a glimpse into Perugia's ancient past. As a sound engineer, I’m always fascinated by the acoustics of ancient spaces, wondering how sound resonated within these structures centuries ago. The ride there was smooth and easy, and the surrounding views were picturesque.

Stepping into the Ipogeo dei Volumni felt like entering another world. The air was cool and still, carrying the weight of centuries. The tomb, belonging to the Volumni family, was an incredible example of Etruscan funerary architecture. The intricate carvings and the sheer scale of the tomb were awe-inspiring. Lena and I wandered through the chambers, marveling at the craftsmanship and imagining the lives of those who were laid to rest here. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the rich history that lies beneath our feet.

Exploring the Ipogeo dei Volumni was like stepping back in time, connecting with the echoes of a civilization that once thrived in this very place.

After exploring the tomb, we ventured into the Necropoli del Palazzone, the surrounding cemetery. The necropolis contained numerous tombs, each with its own unique design and history. As we walked among the ancient stones, I couldn't help but reflect on the passage of time and the enduring power of human stories. I even imagined what sounds might have filled this place during ancient burial rituals. It was a truly immersive experience, one that transported us back to the world of the Etruscans.

Leaving the ancient world behind, we sought refuge in the Orto Botanico dell'Università di Perugia, a botanical garden that offered a refreshing contrast to the solemnity of the necropolis. As we walked through the entrance, we were greeted by a riot of colors and scents. The garden was a vibrant tapestry of plant life, with winding paths leading through different ecosystems. The Orto Botanico dell'Università di Perugia is a stunning botanical garden that serves as both a serene retreat and an educational haven for visitors.

Lena, with her background as a kindergarten teacher, was particularly delighted by the diverse array of flowers and plants. She pointed out various species, sharing her knowledge of botany and ecology. I, on the other hand, was captivated by the sounds of the garden – the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the gentle murmur of water fountains. It was a symphony of nature, a welcome respite from the noise of the city.

We spent a leisurely afternoon wandering through the garden, pausing to admire the exotic plants in the greenhouse and relaxing by the tranquil ponds. It was a perfect way to reconnect with nature and recharge our spirits. I even took some time to record the ambient sounds of the garden, hoping to capture its essence and share it with others. As a sound engineer, I am always looking for new and interesting sounds to capture, and the botanical garden was a treasure trove of sonic delights.

As lunchtime approached, our stomachs began to rumble, and we decided to head to La Prosciutteria Perugia. The reviews I had read raved about their Tagliere Grande, and we were eager to try it for ourselves. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a lively atmosphere that was a stark contrast to the quiet serenity of the morning.

We ordered the Tagliere Grande for two, and it was a feast for the senses. The platter was laden with local products, including cured meats, cheeses, and vegetables. Each item was bursting with flavor, a testament to the quality of the ingredients. We savored every bite, washing it down with a glass of local wine. The service was fast and friendly, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect place for a satisfying and authentic Italian lunch. The nice decor and quiet ambiance let visitors feel relaxed here.

After lunch, we made a brief stop at the Fontana del Piscinello. This ancient fountain, one of Perugia's oldest, has a fascinating history. Legend has it that the fountain's name, meaning little pool, comes from a time when blood flowed through the streets during a conflict between the Baglioni and Oddi families in 1482, coloring the water red. In reality, the name likely predates this event, referring to the fountain's small water flow. Today, the fountain, made of travertine, shows signs of age, with erosion and biological growth. Restoration efforts are underway to preserve this historic landmark. It's a reminder that even the most beautiful things require care and attention to stand the test of time.

As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to a delightful dinner at Locanda Del Bartoccio. This restaurant, known for its traditional Umbrian cuisine, promised an authentic culinary experience. The cozy atmosphere and the friendly staff made us feel right at home.

We started with the legume and mushroom soup, a must-try according to many reviews, and it did not disappoint. It was rich, flavorful, and comforting, the perfect way to warm ourselves on a cool evening. For our main courses, Lena chose the veal cheek with mash, while I opted for the sliced lamb served with baked potatoes. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, showcasing the best of Umbrian cuisine. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. It was a truly memorable dining experience, one that we would gladly repeat.

To cap off our evening, we decided to visit Artygù Perugia - Bistrot, Wine e Cocktail Bar for a nightcap. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying drinks and conversation. We ordered a couple of cocktails and relaxed, soaking in the ambiance and reflecting on our day.

As we sipped our drinks, Lena and I talked about our favorite moments of the day. We both agreed that the Ipogeo dei Volumni was a highlight, a truly unique and awe-inspiring experience. We also cherished the time we spent in the botanical garden, reconnecting with nature and enjoying each other's company. And of course, we couldn't forget the delicious food we had throughout the day, from the hearty breakfast at Bottega Dei Priori to the satisfying lunch at La Prosciutteria and the memorable dinner at Locanda Del Bartoccio.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Casa del Cioccolato Perugina. Lena, with her sweet tooth, is particularly excited about this stop. I am looking forward to learning about the history of Perugina chocolate and perhaps even indulging in a tasting or two. We also plan to visit the Civic Museum of Palazzo della Penna and the Capitularies Museum of Saint Lorenzo, hoping to delve deeper into Perugia's art and culture.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had today. Perugia has a way of captivating the senses, of transporting you to another time and place. It's a city that rewards exploration, that offers hidden treasures around every corner. And I am grateful to be sharing this journey with my beloved Lena, my partner in life and adventure.

Visiting the Artygù Perugia bar was the perfect way to cap off the day. I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings, to more adventures and discoveries in this enchanting city. I am falling in love with Perugia, one day at a time. The sounds of the city are slowly lulling me to sleep, and I am excited to discover more of what Perugia has to offer. Until tomorrow, ciao!
