Indulge in Perugia's sweet side with chocolate tasting, explore captivating museums, and savor local cuisine on a delightful Sunday adventure.
A Day of Decadence and Discovery
Today was a delightful blend of sweet indulgence, artistic exploration, and culinary discoveries here in Perugia. Lena and I set out to make the most of our Sunday, and the city certainly didn't disappoint. It’s amazing how each day here reveals a new facet of this charming Italian gem.
The weather was beautiful, with the sun shining and a gentle breeze making it perfect for strolling through the city. According to the forecast, the temperature would reach around 27°C, so we made sure to apply sunscreen and stay hydrated. The city was bustling with activity, and I even noticed a poster for the Perugia 1416 festival happening, which celebrates the historical period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The air was filled with a palpable sense of excitement. I think my passion for sound engineering makes me extra sensitive to the vibe of a place, and Perugia has a unique energy that's hard to describe.
Our first stop was, without a doubt, the most anticipated: the Casa del Cioccolato Perugina. As a sound engineer, I appreciate the artistry and precision that goes into creating a perfect soundscape, and I found similar dedication in the art of chocolate making. We took a taxi to San Sisto, where the Perugina factory is located, and were immediately enveloped in the rich aroma of cocoa. It was a sensory experience that reminded me of the way a perfectly balanced mix can create an immersive sonic environment.
The Casa del Cioccolato was more than just a factory tour; it was an immersive journey into the history and craftsmanship of Perugina chocolate. We started with the museum, which showcased the evolution of Perugina from its humble beginnings to its current status as a world-renowned brand. I was fascinated by the vintage packaging and the stories behind the iconic Baci chocolates. I even learned about Luisa Spagnoli, the founder of Perugina, and her innovative spirit. It’s inspiring to see how a small, local business can grow into a global phenomenon while maintaining its commitment to quality and tradition.
The best kind of chocolate is the kind you share with someone you love.
Next, we participated in a chocolate-making class at the Scuola del Cioccolato. Lena was particularly excited about this, as she has a sweet tooth and loves experimenting in the kitchen. Our instructor, a charming Italian chocolatier named Alessandro, guided us through the process of tempering chocolate, creating ganaches, and molding our own Baci. I have to admit, I was a bit clumsy at first, but with Alessandro's patient guidance, I managed to create a few decent-looking chocolates. The best part, of course, was tasting our creations. The rich, smooth flavor of the freshly made chocolate was simply divine. I even bought a few extra Baci from the gift shop to take back home to Potsdam.
After our chocolate adventure, we headed back to the city center for a late lunch. We decided to try Trattoria Oberdan Perugia, a local favorite known for its traditional Umbrian cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that made us feel right at home. We started with a platter of cold cuts and cheeses, which was excellent and abundant. Lena ordered the saffron and truffle gnocchi, which she declared divine, and I opted for the sliced meat with truffles, which was delicious and great value for money. The service was friendly and attentive, and the prices were fair for the quality and quantity of the food served. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning of chocolate indulgence.
With our appetites satisfied, we set out to explore some of Perugia's cultural attractions. Our first stop was the Civic Museum of Palazzo della Penna. Housed in a historic building, the museum features permanent collections as well as temporary exhibits, showcasing an array of contemporary and modern artworks. I was particularly interested in the works of Gerardo Dottori, a futurist painter who spent most of his life in Perugia. His aeropainting style, with its dynamic perspectives and vibrant colors, resonated with my own creative sensibilities. Lena, on the other hand, was drawn to the temporary exhibition dedicated to Dorothea Lange, an American documentary photographer known for her powerful images of the Great Depression. The exhibition featured more than 130 shots that chronicled a crucial decade in Lange's career, from the 1930s to the 1940s. It was a sobering reminder of the human cost of economic hardship.
From Palazzo della Penna, we made our way to the Capitularies Museum of Saint Lorenzo. Located within the monumental complex of San Lorenzo Island, the museum showcases a rich collection of Renaissance-era works by renowned artists such as Perugino and Signorelli. The museum is set in the splendid monumental complex of San Lorenzo Island, which also includes the Perugia Underground and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. I was fascinated by the story of the Holy Virgin Mary's wedding ring and the Acre manuscript. Lena was particularly impressed by the clothing of Cardinal Armellini and Luca Signorelli's Renaissance masterpiece. The Capitularies Museum of Saint Lorenzo is a must-visit for art enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into Perugia's rich cultural heritage. The museum boasted an impressive rating, with guests praising the knowledgeable guides and fascinating exhibits. It was truly a great experience, and the building itself was an architectural marvel. We spent a good couple of hours wandering the halls, admiring the artistry and learning about the history behind each piece.
Before dinner, we took a stroll through Perugia Tartufi Perugia. As a sound engineer, I appreciate the subtle nuances and complexities of sound, and I found a similar appreciation for the delicate flavors of truffles. The shop was filled with a wide array of truffle products, from truffle oil and truffle salt to truffle pasta and truffle cheese. We sampled a few different items and were blown away by the intense, earthy aroma and flavor of the truffles. We ended up buying a small jar of truffle paste to take home with us, hoping to recreate some of the delicious dishes we've tried here in Perugia. I think Lena is already planning a truffle-themed dinner party for our friends in Potsdam!
For dinner, we decided to splurge a bit and try Ristorante Gradale, a fine-dining establishment known for its innovative cuisine and elegant ambiance. The restaurant is located a few kilometers from the historic center of Perugia, offering a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. We started with a glass of prosecco and a selection of appetizers, including truffle arancini and zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta cheese. For our main courses, Lena ordered the roasted pigeon with cherry sauce, while I opted for the grilled octopus with smoked paprika. Both dishes were beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, and the sommelier recommended a fantastic local wine to pair with our meal. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
As we walked back to Hotel Fortuna, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Perugia. This city has a way of captivating your senses and nourishing your soul. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Rocca Maggiore in Assisi, Piazza del Comune, and Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli. I’m sure Assisi will be just as magical as Perugia has been.
Until then, *arrivederci*!
