Echoes of the Past

Today, Lena and I embarked on a journey through time, exploring the ancient heart of Perugia. From delving into Etruscan mysteries to ascending medieval heights, we immersed ourselves in the rich tapestry of this captivating city. It's amazing how much history is packed into these old stones, each telling a story of civilizations long past.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at La Bottega di Perugia. This charming little spot is known for its panini, crafted with fresh, local ingredients. I opted for a sandwich with some local cheese and cured meat, while Lena enjoyed a vegetarian option bursting with fresh vegetables and hummus. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The owners, Gerardo and Cristian, were incredibly welcoming, making us feel like locals as they prepared our sandwiches with artistic flair. The sandwiches even had playful names in the Perugian dialect!

After breakfast, we made our way to the National Archaeological Museum of Umbria. The museum is housed in the former convent of San Domenico, a beautiful building that adds to the allure of the artifacts within. As a sound engineer, I found myself particularly drawn to the acoustics of the building itself – the echoes and reverberations seemed to whisper stories of centuries past. The museum's collection is primarily focused on Etruscan and Roman artifacts, offering a comprehensive overview of the region's ancient history. We spent a good couple of hours wandering through the exhibits, marveling at the intricate pottery, bronze sculptures, and funerary urns. Lena was fascinated by the displays on Etruscan burial rituals, while I was captivated by the tools and instruments used in daily life. It's humbling to see the ingenuity and artistry of these ancient civilizations.

From the museum, we ventured to the Etruscan Well, also known as the Pozzo Etrusco. This remarkable feat of engineering dates back to the 3rd century BC and is a testament to the Etruscans' advanced knowledge of hydraulics. Descending into the well is like stepping back in time. The cylindrical shaft plunges 37 meters into the earth, lined with massive stone blocks that have stood the test of time. The air is cool and damp, and the sound of dripping water echoes through the cavernous space. It's hard to imagine the effort it must have taken to construct this well without modern tools. As I stood on the modern glass and steel walkway that bisects the well, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for the engineers who designed and built this incredible structure.

History is not the past but a map of the past, drawn from a particular point of view.

After emerging from the depths of the Etruscan Well, we decided to aim high and visit the Sciri Tower. This medieval tower, dating back to the 13th century, is one of the few remaining towers in Perugia and offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside. Climbing the tower was a bit of a workout, but the reward was well worth the effort. From the top, we could see the red-tiled roofs of Perugia stretching out before us, punctuated by church spires and bell towers. In the distance, the rolling hills of Umbria faded into the horizon. It was a truly breathtaking sight. I could only imagine what it must have been like to stand guard on this tower centuries ago, watching for invaders or signaling important events. The tower itself has an interesting history, having been owned by several prominent families and even serving as part of a convent for a time. It's a tangible link to Perugia's medieval past.

Having worked up an appetite with all our exploring, Lena and I decided to have lunch at Al Mangiar Bene. This charming trattoria is known for its traditional Umbrian cuisine and cozy atmosphere. We started with a plate of cured meats and cheeses, followed by a hearty pasta dish with truffle sauce. The food was simple but delicious, and the service was warm and friendly. It felt like we were dining in someone's home. Al Mangiar Bene prides itself on using local ingredients and supporting local farmers, which is something we always appreciate when we travel. The restaurant is located in a historic building with beautiful arched vaults, adding to the overall ambiance.

After lunch, we couldn't resist a visit to Chocostore by Eurochocolate. As chocolate lovers, we were in heaven! This store is a paradise for anyone with a sweet tooth, offering a wide variety of chocolates, candies, and other treats. We sampled several different types of chocolate, from dark and intense to creamy and sweet. I even tried a chocolate flavored with chili peppers – it was surprisingly good! Lena bought a box of assorted chocolates to take back to Potsdam, while I opted for a chocolate-themed souvenir mug. The store is a celebration of all things chocolate, and it's impossible to leave without a smile on your face.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Ristorante Al Tartufo for dinner. This elegant restaurant specializes in truffle dishes, and we were eager to experience the culinary delights it had to offer. We started with a truffle bruschetta, followed by tagliolini with black truffle. The truffle flavor was rich and earthy, and the pasta was perfectly cooked. For our main courses, Lena ordered the beef fillet with truffle, while I opted for the scrambled eggs with truffle. Both dishes were exquisite. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, with a mix of modern and traditional elements. The service was impeccable, and the staff was knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Abbazia di San Pietro, the Palazzo dei Priori, and the Cattedrale San Lorenzo. We're also hoping to enjoy a glass of wine at Vinoteca Perugia in the evening. I'm excited to see what other treasures Perugia has in store for us.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by how Perugia seamlessly blends its ancient past with its modern present. The echoes of the Etruscans and Romans can still be heard in the stones of the city, while the vibrant culture of today thrives in its streets and squares. It's a city that engages all the senses, from the taste of its delicious cuisine to the sounds of its bustling streets and the sights of its stunning architecture. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this enchanting city with Lena, and I look forward to discovering even more of its secrets in the days to come.
