Lisbon's Echoes of Exploration

Today, Lena and I traded the mystical hills of Sintra for the vibrant maritime heart of Lisbon. We were keen to explore the historical landmarks that once witnessed the departure of intrepid explorers and the arrival of treasures from distant lands. It was a day filled with awe, reflection, and the salty breeze of the Tagus River.

Our day began, as always, with a hearty breakfast. We decided to try Becco de Sintra, a local spot known for its traditional Portuguese fare. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service set the perfect tone for our Lisbon adventure. I opted for the *pão com chouriço* (bread with chorizo), while Lena enjoyed a *pastel de nata*, that classic Portuguese custard tart. Fortified, we hopped on the train to Lisbon, eager to immerse ourselves in the city's rich history.

Our first stop was a boat tour of Lisbon. As a sound engineer, I'm always attuned to the acoustic environment, and the sounds of Lisbon from the water were captivating – the gentle lapping of waves, the distant hum of the city, and the cries of seagulls overhead. The tour gave us a unique perspective of the city's skyline, and Lena, ever the enthusiastic photographer, snapped away, capturing the beauty of Lisbon from a different angle. The guide pointed out historical landmarks, sharing stories of brave explorers and the city's maritime past. It was fascinating to learn about Lisbon's role in the Age of Discovery and how it shaped the world we know today. I could almost imagine the caravels setting sail, filled with dreams of new worlds and untold riches. I made a mental note to research traditional Portuguese maritime music when I got back to Potsdam; I felt inspired to incorporate it into one of my soundscapes.

After our aquatic adventure, we headed to the Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of Manueline architecture. The intricate details of the monastery were breathtaking – the ornate carvings, the soaring arches, and the play of light and shadow. As we wandered through the cloisters, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the monks who once lived and prayed here. The monastery is also the final resting place of Vasco da Gama, the legendary explorer who discovered the sea route to India. Standing before his tomb, I felt a profound connection to Portugal's maritime history and the spirit of exploration that drove these brave seafarers. Lena was particularly fascinated by the botanical motifs in the architecture, pointing out the exotic plants and sea creatures that were incorporated into the design. It was a beautiful reminder of the interconnectedness of the world and the impact of the Age of Discovery.

To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.

Next on our itinerary was the Belém Tower, another iconic landmark that once served as a fortress and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. As we approached the tower, I was struck by its elegant design and its strategic location on the Tagus River. The tower's history is as fascinating as its architecture – it has served as a defense against invaders, a customs control point, and even a prison. Climbing to the top of the tower, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the river and the city. The wind whipped through our hair as we gazed out at the horizon, imagining the ships that once sailed from this very spot to explore the unknown. It was a powerful reminder of Portugal's maritime legacy and its impact on the world.

After soaking in the history and the views, we decided to indulge in a late lunch at Restaurante Azenhas do Mar, a seafood restaurant perched on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The restaurant's ambiance was simply magical – the sound of crashing waves, the salty air, and the breathtaking views. We shared a platter of fresh seafood, savoring the flavors of the ocean. Lena, being a vegetarian, enjoyed a delicious vegetable risotto. As we ate, we watched the sun slowly descend, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a perfect moment, a celebration of our journey and the beauty of Portugal.

Before heading back to Sintra, we made a quick stop at A Loja, a charming shop in Sintra. I picked up a few souvenirs for my family back in Potsdam – some local crafts and a bottle of *vinho verde*, a refreshing Portuguese wine. Lena found a beautiful hand-painted tile, a memento of our Lisbon adventure.

For dinner, we decided to try Taberna Criativa in Sintra. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and creative menu were a welcome change of pace. I opted for the *cozido à portuguesa*, a traditional Portuguese stew, while Lena enjoyed a vegetarian dish made with local vegetables. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

As we strolled back to Sintra Bliss Hotel, hand in hand, we reflected on our day in Lisbon. We had explored iconic landmarks, tasted delicious food, and learned about Portugal's rich maritime history. It was a day filled with wonder, discovery, and a deeper appreciation for this beautiful country. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with Lena, my partner in life and adventure. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Queluz National Palace, Lisbon Cathedral, and the Oceanário de Lisboa, continuing our exploration of Portugal's cultural and historical treasures. And perhaps, later in the evening, we'll unwind at the ZID Lounge Bar, raising a glass to another day of unforgettable experiences.

I'm also reminded of a few essentials I forgot to pack – an umbrella, given the unpredictable January weather, and a portable phone charger, crucial for keeping our devices alive during long days of exploration. It's a small oversight, but one that could make a difference in our upcoming adventures.
