Exploring the Enchantment of Sintra with Family
Day 3: A Day of Fairytales and Breathtaking Views in Sintra
Explore Pena Palace, stand at Cape Roca, and discover Quinta Santo Antonio da Serra in Sintra's winter charm. A day of unforgettable beauty.
Embracing Sintra's Majestic Beauty
Today was a day of pure enchantment, a real-life fairytale unfolding before my eyes. Sintra, with its blend of history, natural beauty, and architectural wonders, truly captivated Lena and me. It was a day filled with exploration, delightful discoveries, and moments that I know we’ll cherish forever.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sabores de Sintra. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the cozy restaurant, setting the perfect tone for our adventures. It was a delightful start, and Lena particularly enjoyed the local pastries. Sabores de Sintra is rated highly, with people mentioning the quality of food and the atmosphere. I must agree with the reviewers, it was a great experience.

Fueled and ready, we set off to conquer the National Palace of Pena. Even in January, the palace stood in all its glory. The vibrant colours popped against the backdrop of the clear blue sky, making it a photographer’s dream. As we walked through the palace grounds, I couldn't help but marvel at the architectural fusion – a mix of Neo-Manueline, Moorish, and Gothic styles that created a unique and awe-inspiring structure. Pena Palace is open every day of the year with the exception of Christmas and New Years, and I am glad we got to experience it.

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
Navigating the palace was an adventure in itself. We climbed towers, explored hidden nooks, and gazed out from panoramic viewpoints that offered breathtaking views of Sintra and the surrounding landscape. The palace felt like a labyrinth of wonders, each turn revealing a new and exciting discovery. Lena was particularly fascinated by the Queen’s chambers, with their ornate furniture and intricate details. I found myself drawn to the Great Hall, imagining the grand feasts and celebrations that must have taken place within those walls.
After immersing ourselves in the fairytale atmosphere of Pena Palace, we ventured towards Cape Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. The drive itself was scenic, winding through lush forests and quaint villages. As we approached the coast, the landscape transformed into rugged cliffs and dramatic ocean views. The weather in January is mild, with average temperatures ranging from 11.5°C to 14.6°C, and today was no exception. It was a pleasant day to be out and about.

Standing at Cape Roca, with the wind whipping through our hair and the waves crashing against the rocks below, was a truly exhilarating experience. The sheer power and vastness of the ocean were humbling, reminding us of the insignificance of our place in the world. We took some photos, capturing the stunning scenery and the wild, untamed beauty of the coastline. Lena and I held hands, feeling a sense of connection and shared adventure.
Our appetites piqued by the fresh sea air, we stopped for lunch at Pic Nic I. It was a cozy little spot, and the food was simple but satisfying. We enjoyed some traditional Portuguese dishes, savoring the local flavours and soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant was casual and laid-back, the perfect spot for a quick bite. There were some reviews that stated that they served Indian and Italian food as well, but we stuck to the Portuguese cuisine.

With renewed energy, we made our way to Quinta Santo Antonio da Serra, a charming retreat nestled in the hills. Though technically located closer to Santa Cruz in Madeira, the name intrigued me, and I wanted to see if it lived up to its reputation. The drive was a bit longer, but the scenery was worth it. As we arrived, we were greeted by the tranquil atmosphere and the lush greenery surrounding the property. It was a welcome contrast to the rugged coastline of Cape Roca.

We explored the gardens, admiring the colorful flowers and the peaceful ambiance. Quinta Santo Antonio da Serra offered a sense of serenity and escape, a place to relax and reconnect with nature. It was easy to see why so many people raved about it. I could easily picture myself spending a few days here, unwinding and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. Quinta Santo Antonio Da Serra is situated in the Madeira countryside, only 18 km from Funchal. It seems to be a very cozy place to stay.
As evening approached, we returned to Sintra, ready for a delicious dinner at A Lanterna. This restaurant offered a cozy and intimate setting, perfect for a romantic meal. We savored traditional Portuguese dishes, accompanied by local wine, as we reminisced about the day’s adventures. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome and valued.

A Lanterna was the perfect ending to a perfect day. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was charming, and the company was even better. As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude. Sintra had exceeded all our expectations, and I knew that this was a day we would never forget.
Before heading back to the Sintra Bliss Hotel, we decided to check out Salla de Estar for a nightcap. Nestled in Sintra, it had a unique vibe that drew us in. The bar was dimly lit, creating a cozy atmosphere, and the bartender was a true mixologist, crafting unique cocktails with local ingredients. Lena opted for a classic gin and tonic, while I tried a local craft beer. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring Sintra's wonders. The bar had some mixed reviews, some people mentioning it was claustrophobic and did not have windows. However, we found it to be a great experience.

Tomorrow, we’re off to Lisbon for a boat tour and a visit to Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower. I’m excited to see what the capital has in store for us. But for tonight, I’ll drift off to sleep with dreams of palaces, cliffs, and the enchanting beauty of Sintra.
It’s funny how travel can change you. Before moving to Potsdam, I was so focused on my career, always chasing the next big project. But these trips with Lena, they’ve shown me the importance of slowing down, of appreciating the beauty around us. Maybe it’s the Greek blood in me, always searching for that perfect sunset, that perfect melody. Or maybe it’s just growing up, realizing what truly matters. Either way, I’m grateful for these moments, for the chance to explore the world with the woman I love.
As I reflect on our experiences, I realize that Sintra is more than just a collection of beautiful sights; it’s a feeling, an atmosphere, a sense of wonder that lingers long after you’ve left. It’s a place that awakens your imagination, inspires your creativity, and reminds you of the magic that exists in the world. And as a sound engineer, I can't help but appreciate the unique soundscape of Sintra – the gentle rustling of leaves in the forests, the crashing of waves against the cliffs, the melodic sounds of Portuguese being spoken in the streets. It's a symphony of nature and culture that enriches the soul.
And now, as the day draws to a close, I raise a glass to Sintra, a place that has captured my heart and ignited my wanderlust. May your palaces continue to inspire, your cliffs continue to amaze, and your beauty continue to enchant all who visit.
