Exploring the Enchantment of Sintra with Family
Day 2: A Day of Fairytales and Echoes in Sintra's Enchanting Hills
Journey through Sintra's mystical landscapes, exploring Monserrate Palace, Moorish Castle, and the charming Chalet of the Countess of Edla.
Whispers of the Past, Visions of Beauty
Today, Sintra revealed more of its captivating soul, a blend of architectural grandeur and natural splendor that left Lena and me utterly spellbound. From the exotic gardens of Monserrate to the ancient walls of the Moorish Castle and the romantic allure of the Countess of Edla's Chalet, it was a day of traversing time and cultures.
Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at Incomum. It was a great way to fuel up for the day ahead. The fusion cuisine was an interesting start to a day filled with historical and architectural exploration. After breakfast, we set off, ready to immerse ourselves in Sintra's wonders.
Monserrate's Exotic Embrace
The Park and Palace of Monserrate were our first stop, and what a start it was! The palace itself is a stunning example of Romantic architecture, a delightful mix of Gothic, Indian, and Moorish influences. As we wandered through its halls, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate stonework and the play of light through the stained-glass windows. Lena was particularly taken with the palace's exotic exterior, noting how it felt like stepping into a different world.

But it wasn't just the palace that captivated us; the gardens were equally enchanting. Designed in a romantic style, they feature a lake, springs, fountains, and grottoes, all surrounded by lush greenery. We strolled along the winding paths, discovering plant species from all corners of the globe. There were tree ferns from Australia and New Zealand, agaves and yuccas from Mexico, and rhododendrons and camellias representing Japan. It was like taking a botanical journey around the world.
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
I found myself particularly drawn to the Himalayan rhododendrons, their vibrant blooms adding a splash of color to the winter landscape. Lena, with her keen eye for detail, was fascinated by the bamboo-fringed Japanese garden. We spent a good couple of hours exploring the gardens, losing ourselves in their beauty and tranquility. The crisp January air, the gentle sunlight filtering through the trees, and the sound of water trickling in the fountains created a serene atmosphere that was balm to the soul. We even stumbled upon the 'Totem', a sculpture made from the trunk of a eucalyptus tree, a quirky and unexpected addition to the landscape.
Conquering the Moorish Castle
Next on our itinerary was the Moorish Castle, a hilltop medieval fortress that offered a stark contrast to the opulent beauty of Monserrate. As we approached the castle, the views were already breathtaking. Perched high above the town of Sintra, the castle commands panoramic vistas of the surrounding hills and the Atlantic coastline. The climb up to the castle was a bit strenuous, but the views from the top were well worth the effort.

The castle itself is a testament to the region's rich history, dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries when it was built by the Moors. It played a crucial strategic role during the Reconquista and was eventually taken by Christian forces in the 12th century. As we walked along the ancient walls, I couldn't help but imagine the battles that had been fought here, the sieges endured, and the lives lived within these very stones. Lena, ever the history enthusiast, shared fascinating details about the castle's past, bringing the stories of its former inhabitants to life.
The castle's irregular plan and double belt of walls added to its rugged charm. We explored the ruins of the old chapel, the remains of storage structures, and the rectangular cistern. The Castle History Interpretation Centre provided valuable insights into the castle's past, showcasing archaeological finds and artifacts from various periods. We learned about the castle's role in the military plans of Belata, the Muslim province that once encompassed the region. It was fascinating to discover how the castle had been remodeled and expanded over time, eventually becoming a Romantic-era ruin thanks to the vision of Ferdinand II.
Romance at the Chalet of the Countess of Edla
Our final stop for the day was the Chalet of the Countess of Edla, a charming and romantic retreat nestled within the Park of Pena. This idyllic chalet was built by King Ferdinand II and his second wife, Elise Hensler, in the 19th century, and it exudes an air of intimacy and romance. The chalet's design was inspired by alpine chalets, which were in vogue throughout Europe at the time. Its exterior is characterized by the horizontal marking of the plaster, painted to resemble timber cladding, and by the extensive use of cork as a decorative element. Lena, with her love for all things romantic, was completely smitten with the chalet's charm.

As we explored the chalet, we were struck by its picturesque setting and the stunning views from its veranda. The sea glistened in the distance, and the walls of the Moorish Castle stood proudly on the hills. The surrounding garden was equally enchanting, featuring exotic collections, viewpoints overlooking the Palace, the Chalet, and the Moorish Castle, and botanical species from all over the world. The Chalet and Garden of the Countess of Edla reflect the artistic facets of the couple. With a highly individual taste, its facade and interiors are simply unparalleled. On the outside, the garden surrounding the chalet creates an exotic landscape featuring highlights such as the Fern Garden of the Countess, the Garden of Joina, the Arbor and the Chalet's Labyrinth of Stone.
The Chalet of the Countess of Edla is more than just a building; it's a symbol of love and romance. It's a place where King Ferdinand II and Elise Hensler found solace and happiness, and it's a place where visitors can still feel their presence today.
Before heading back to our hotel, we took a stroll through Sintra Centre, browsing the local shops and soaking up the town's atmosphere. I picked up a small bouzouki figurine as a memento of our trip, a reminder of my Greek heritage and our adventures in Portugal. Lena found a beautiful hand-painted tile depicting a scene from Sintra, a perfect addition to our collection of travel souvenirs.
For dinner, we decided to try Curral dos Caprinos, a restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. I must admit, after a day of walking and exploring, we were both ravenous. We shared a hearty portion of oven-baked kid with roast potatoes and spinach puree, a dish that was both comforting and delicious. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
As we walked back to Sintra Bliss Hotel, hand in hand, Lena and I reflected on our day in Sintra. We had seen so much, learned so much, and experienced so much beauty. Sintra had truly captured our hearts, and we knew that we would never forget our time here. As I think about tomorrow, I am excited to visit the National Palace of Pena and Cape Roca. I am also looking forward to visiting Salla de Estar. It will be a great way to relax.
