Finding Paradise in Peneda-Gerês: Waterfalls and Scenic Overlooks
Today, Lena and I embarked on a journey to explore some of the most picturesque spots in Peneda-Gerês National Park. We were eager to discover the natural beauty that this region has to offer, and today did not disappoint. From cascading waterfalls to breathtaking viewpoints, every moment was a feast for the senses.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Encosta do Rio. The restaurant offered a delightful view of the lake, setting a perfect tone for the adventurous day ahead. I savored a strong coffee while Lena enjoyed some fresh bread with local cheese. Fuelled up, we set off towards our first destination: Cascatas de Fecha de Barjas, also known as Cascatas do Tahiti.

The drive to the waterfalls was scenic, with winding roads offering glimpses of the park's stunning landscapes. As we approached the trailhead, we could already hear the distant sound of rushing water. The anticipation was palpable. We parked the car and started our descent towards the cascades. The trail was a bit steep and rocky, so I was glad we had our hiking boots on. I had forgotten my raincoat, but thankfully the weather was on our side today. As we hiked, I couldn't help but wish I had remembered my binoculars to better observe the local wildlife.
Finally, we arrived at Cascatas de Fecha de Barjas. The sight was simply breathtaking. The water cascaded down the rocks, forming natural pools that invited us for a refreshing swim. Despite the slight chill in the air, we couldn't resist taking a dip. The water was crystal clear and invigorating. We spent a good hour exploring the different levels of the cascades, taking photos, and simply enjoying the moment. Lena was in her element, snapping away with her camera, capturing the beauty of the falls from every angle.
Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
After our refreshing swim, we decided to dry off and head towards our next destination: Miradouro da Preguiça. This viewpoint promised panoramic views of the Gerês valley, and we were eager to see it for ourselves. The drive to the Miradouro was short, and soon we found ourselves standing at the edge of the viewpoint. The view was simply stunning. The entire valley stretched out before us, with the Caniçada reservoir shimmering in the distance. We could see the winding roads we had driven on earlier, and the tiny villages dotting the landscape. I took out my portable audio recorder and captured the sounds of the wind and the distant murmur of the river.

We spent some time at the Miradouro, simply soaking in the view and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. I closed my eyes and imagined what it must have been like for the early settlers of this region, who had to navigate this rugged terrain without the benefit of modern technology. It was a humbling experience.
By this time, we were starting to feel a bit hungry, so we decided to head to Petiscos da Bó Gusta for lunch. This restaurant was known for its traditional Portuguese tapas, and we were eager to try some local flavors. We ordered a selection of petiscos, including the broa recheada and picadinho. Each dish was bursting with flavor, and we savored every bite. Lena particularly enjoyed the local Vinho Verde, while I opted for a refreshing Sagres beer. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home.

After lunch, we decided to explore the local shops in the area. We stumbled upon Peneda Gerês Adventure Center by Tobogã. Although we didn't participate in any of their adventure activities today, we browsed their shop and picked up a few souvenirs. I was particularly impressed by their commitment to sustainable tourism, which aligns perfectly with my own values.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Essentia do Gerês for dinner. This restaurant was located in the Hotel das Águas do Gerês , and it offered a more refined dining experience. We started with some local cheese and olives, followed by a delicious seafood risotto. The flavors were delicate and well-balanced, and the presentation was impeccable. Lena and I shared a bottle of vinho verde as we recounted the day's adventures. The service was attentive, and the ambiance was elegant and relaxed.

From the cascading waters of Cascatas do Tahiti to the panoramic views from Miradouro da Preguiça, every moment was a reminder of the power and majesty of nature. And the delicious meals at Encosta do Rio, Petiscos da Bó Gusta, and Essentia do Gerês were the perfect complement to our outdoor adventures.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Minas dos Carris and Pico da Nevosa. I'm looking forward to more hiking and breathtaking views! Perhaps we'll end the day with a drink at The Lodge Gerês. It's moments like these, shared with my beloved Lena, that make life truly special. The memories we're creating in Peneda-Gerês are ones I know we'll cherish forever.
I’m also glad that we decided to mix camping and staying in local guesthouses, as it really allows us to connect with the environment and the local culture. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures, and to sharing them with you all!
It's safe to say that forgetting my raincoat and binoculars were minor setbacks in what was a truly unforgettable day. I’ll make sure to pack them tomorrow!
