Summiting Gerês: Mines and Mountain Highs

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of natural beauty and human history etched into the rugged landscape of Peneda-Gerês. We set out to conquer the highest peak in the park and explore the remnants of a once-thriving mining complex, a journey that promised both physical challenge and a glimpse into the region's past.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Pedra Bela Gerês. Fuelling up is essential for the adventures we have planned. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth, a refreshing change from the city. Lena and I were both eager to start our trek, and after a quick coffee, we set off towards our first destination: Minas dos Carris.

The drive itself was stunning, winding roads revealing panoramic views of the park. As we approached the trailhead, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. I have always been drawn to places where nature and history intertwine, and Minas dos Carris seemed to offer just that. The trail began innocently enough, a gentle slope leading into a valley. Soon, however, it became clear that this was no leisurely stroll. The path grew steeper, the terrain more rugged, and the sun beat down relentlessly. I was glad I had my hiking boots, even though I forgot my raincoat. Lena, ever the optimist, kept my spirits high with her cheerful chatter and unwavering enthusiasm. We helped each other over the more challenging sections, our teamwork as solid as the granite peaks surrounding us.

As we hiked, the landscape transformed. Lush greenery gave way to rocky outcrops, and the sound of rushing water faded into the silence of the mountains. We passed old stone walls, remnants of a time when this land was cultivated and inhabited. It was a stark reminder of the human presence that once thrived here, a presence now slowly being reclaimed by nature. Finally, after a few hours of strenuous hiking, we reached Minas dos Carris.

The sight was both awe-inspiring and melancholic. Dilapidated buildings clung to the mountainside, their roofs caved in, their walls crumbling. Rusty machinery lay scattered about, silent witnesses to a bygone era. The air was thick with the scent of minerals and decay, a testament to the industrial activity that once dominated this place. We explored the ruins, carefully navigating the unstable structures and overgrown paths. It was easy to imagine the bustling activity that once filled these hills, the miners toiling away in search of their fortune. I thought about my own work as a sound engineer, capturing the echoes of human stories, and I wondered what sounds these ruins would whisper if they could talk.

The echoes of the past resonate deeply in the silent ruins, a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of human endeavor amidst the enduring grandeur of nature.

After a while, we descended from the mines and drove to O Pimpão for lunch. We enjoyed traditional Portuguese cuisine while sitting on the terrace, overlooking the stunning landscape. I had some delicious grilled meat, and Lena enjoyed a hearty vegetable stew. It was the perfect way to refuel before our next adventure.

With our bellies full and our spirits renewed, we set our sights on Pico da Nevosa, the highest point in Peneda-Gerês National Park.

The drive to the trailhead was another feast for the eyes, with winding roads revealing breathtaking vistas at every turn. As we ascended, the vegetation changed once again, from dense forests to windswept heathland. The air grew noticeably cooler, and the sky seemed to stretch out forever.

The hike to the summit was challenging, but the views were more than worth the effort. From the top, we could see the entire park laid out before us, a tapestry of mountains, valleys, and forests. The wind whipped around us, carrying the scent of wildflowers and the distant sound of cowbells. We stood there for a long time, simply soaking in the beauty of it all. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of why we love to travel and explore.

The descent was, as always, harder on the knees, but the promise of a well-deserved dinner kept us going. We made our way to Lurdes Capela in Gerês, a restaurant known for its traditional cuisine and cozy atmosphere.

The restaurant was warm and inviting, filled with the aroma of wood-fired cooking. We ordered Cabrito do Gerês (goat) and Vitela Barrosã (veal), two local specialties, and savored every bite. The food was hearty and delicious, the perfect end to a long day of hiking.

After dinner, we decided to stop by The Lodge Gerês for a nightcap.

It was a cozy little bar with a fireplace and comfortable seating. We ordered a couple of local beers and chatted about our day, reliving our favorite moments and planning our adventures for tomorrow. The bar had a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and we quickly struck up a conversation with some fellow travelers. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with new people.

As we sipped our beers, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. We had conquered a mountain, explored a historic mining complex, and savored the flavors of the region. But more importantly, we had connected with each other and with the natural world around us. It was a day that I will cherish for a long time to come.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Mata de Albergaria, one of the oldest and most beautiful forests in the park, and visit Cascata da Portela do Homem, a stunning waterfall cascading down the mountainside. And, if Lena has her way, we will visit the Eco Store to pick up some locally made souvenirs. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure in this beautiful corner of Portugal.

The weather in Peneda-Gerês in August is generally warm and sunny, with average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 26°C. However, the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so it's always a good idea to be prepared for all conditions. August is also a popular time to visit the park, so expect larger crowds at the main attractions. Despite the crowds, the park is still a paradise for nature lovers, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, swimming, and exploring.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a note to buy a portable phone charger. It would be useful to have tomorrow, as I forgot mine at home. I also thought about how much I enjoyed listening to the sounds of nature today. I think I will bring my portable audio recorder tomorrow so I can capture some sounds for my work back in Potsdam. Goodnight from Gerês!
