A Day of Serenity and Spooky Tales

As my solo journey through Serra da Lousã nears its end, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had. Today was a blend of relaxation, historical intrigue, and of course, delicious food. It's amazing how a single day can encapsulate so much of what makes this region so special.

The sun was shining brightly as I started my day, a welcome change from some of the mistier mornings I've experienced this past week. I decided to treat myself to a hearty breakfast at Taberna Burguesa. The place was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with some traditional Portuguese fare. I opted for a *tosta mista* and a strong *café* to fuel my adventures. It's funny, even though I'm Greek and used to strong coffee, the Portuguese *bica* still manages to give me that extra kick I need in the mornings.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I set off towards my first destination: Praia Fluvial da Senhora da Graça. As I drove, the landscape transformed into a lush, green paradise. The winding roads offered breathtaking views of the Serra da Lousã, making the journey almost as enjoyable as the destination itself. I could not help but think of Lena and how much she would have enjoyed this drive. She always appreciates the beauty of nature, perhaps even more than me. I made a mental note to bring her here someday. The area is known for other river beaches as well, such as Praia Fluvial da Piedade and Praia Fluvial de Louçainha.

When I arrived at Praia Fluvial da Senhora da Graça, I was immediately struck by its beauty. The crystal-clear waters of the River Ceira sparkled under the sunlight, inviting me for a refreshing dip. The beach was well-maintained, with plenty of space for sunbathing and picnicking. I found a quiet spot near the water and spent a couple of hours simply relaxing and soaking up the sun. The serene atmosphere was exactly what I needed after a week of hiking and exploring. I even took a plunge into the cool water, which was invigorating and instantly washed away any lingering fatigue. It was the perfect opportunity to record some ambient sounds of the water and the surrounding nature, sounds that I will later be able to incorporate into my Foley work.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments, like basking in the sun by a tranquil river.

After my relaxing interlude at the river beach, it was time for a change of pace. I packed up my things and drove towards Terreiro das Bruxas. The name itself, which translates to Witches' Square, intrigued me, and I was eager to learn more about the area's history and folklore. The drive to Terreiro das Bruxas was an adventure in itself, as the road wound its way through dense forests and over steep hills. I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation as I approached my destination.

As I arrived, I was greeted by a landscape that seemed to whisper tales of old. The area exuded an aura of mystery, with its ancient trees and weathered stones. I learned that Terreiro das Bruxas is steeped in local legends, with stories of witches gathering in the square to perform their rituals. While the tales may be more folklore than fact, they added an intriguing layer to the experience. I wandered through the square, imagining what it must have been like in centuries past. It was easy to see how such a place could inspire stories of magic and mystery. There are stories transmitted from generation to generation about dances and apparitions of witches in Terreiro das Bruxas. It’s said that the witches have converted to angels, but only the name remained. The area is known for its lush greenery and scenic vistas.

For lunch, I decided to try Churrascaria GalinhAmiga. The name, which roughly translates to Friendly Chicken BBQ, sounded promising, and I was in the mood for some grilled meat. The restaurant was simple but welcoming, with a friendly atmosphere and the enticing aroma of grilled chicken filling the air. I ordered a half-chicken with a side of fries, and it was absolutely delicious. The chicken was perfectly cooked, with a crispy skin and juicy, flavorful meat. It was a satisfying and hearty meal that gave me the energy I needed for the rest of my day. The restaurant also offers take away.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at MO Lousã. I had noticed the store earlier in the week and was curious to see what it had to offer. MO Lousã turned out to be a delightful surprise, with a wide selection of fashionable clothing and accessories. I spent some time browsing the racks, admiring the stylish designs and high-quality materials. I ended up buying a new scarf and a pair of sunglasses, both of which will be perfect for my upcoming travels. The store is open every day from 9 AM to 9 PM.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Restaurante Petisqueira Açoreana for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine and historical atmosphere. The setting was indeed refined, with ornate ceilings and woodwork that transported me back in time. I decided to try some of the local specialties, and I was not disappointed. The flavors were rich and complex, and every dish was prepared with care and attention to detail. The owner was incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Tonight, I'm feeling a mix of contentment and anticipation. Contentment for the wonderful experiences I've had today, and anticipation for my final day in Serra da Lousã. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Castle of Penela and Praia das Rocas, before starting my journey back to Lisbon. I also intend to stop by Muzza Cafe for breakfast, Tó dos Frangos for lunch, and Alto Padrão for a final dinner in the region. And perhaps, if time allows, I'll enjoy a drink at Window's Bar. It’s going to be a bittersweet day, as I say goodbye to this beautiful region. However, I know that the memories and sounds I've captured here will stay with me long after I've left.

As I sit here, writing in my travel journal, I can't help but feel grateful for this solo adventure. It has allowed me to connect with nature, immerse myself in local culture, and discover hidden gems that I would have otherwise missed. Serra da Lousã has truly captured my heart, and I know that I will be back someday to explore more of its wonders. And hopefully next time, I will share all these experiences with Lena.
