A Blue Awakening in Chefchaouen

After months of anticipation, Lena and I finally set foot in Chefchaouen, the famed 'Blue Pearl' of Morocco. The journey from Tangier was a scenic prelude, but nothing could have prepared us for the sheer enchantment of this mountain city. From the moment we passed through the Chefchaouen Gate, I felt like I'd stepped into a dreamscape painted in a thousand shades of blue.

Our day began, as all good travel days should, with a hearty breakfast. We found ourselves at Café Sindibad, a cozy spot recommended by several online guides. The café, thankfully, lived up to the hype. The traditional Moroccan breakfast was a delightful spread of fresh bread, flavorful dips, and strong, sweet mint tea – the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Lena, ever the foodie, was particularly thrilled with the khobz, a local bread that she immediately declared superior to anything we'd had in Berlin. I had to agree; there was something special about the freshly baked bread, enjoyed with a view of the rising sun casting a warm glow on the blue-washed walls.

With our appetites sated, we ventured into the heart of Chefchaouen: the Medina. It's easy to get lost in the labyrinthine alleyways, but that's precisely the point. Every corner turned revealed a new vista, a more charming doorway, or a more captivating shade of blue. I felt like a kid in a candy store, my camera working overtime to capture the ethereal beauty of it all. Lena, with her graphic designer's eye, was equally captivated, constantly pointing out the subtle variations in color and the intricate patterns adorning the buildings. We quickly learned that the best way to navigate the Medina was simply to wander, to let our curiosity guide us, and to embrace the delightful disorientation.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant life that unfolds within them.

Our aimless wandering eventually led us to the Kasbah, a historic fortress located in the heart of the Medina. The Kasbah, a 15th-century structure, offered a glimpse into Chefchaouen's rich history. We explored the Andalusian-style garden, a tranquil oasis of green amidst the blue city. The Kasbah has served as a residence for governors, a military arsenal and even a prison throughout its history. The Ethnographic Museum within the Kasbah was small but fascinating, showcasing traditional Moroccan artifacts, musical instruments, and historical photographs of the city. It provided a valuable context for understanding the culture and heritage of Chefchaouen.

After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for lunch. We opted for Restaurant Bab Ssour, drawn in by its promise of authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant, tucked away on a quiet street, had a charming, unpretentious atmosphere. We shared a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, and a plate of flavorful couscous. The tagine, cooked in a conical earthenware pot, was a symphony of flavors: tender meat, fragrant spices, and sweet vegetables. It was the perfect embodiment of Moroccan cuisine – hearty, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. Lena, who is always up for trying new things, even sampled some local pastries, declaring them a delightful end to our midday meal.

One of the highlights of our afternoon was a visit to Blue. concept store. This was the perfect place to get a sense of the local artisan scene. I found myself eyeing a beautiful hand-woven rug, imagining it adding a touch of Moroccan flair to our Berlin apartment. Lena, meanwhile, was drawn to a collection of hand-painted ceramics, carefully selecting a few pieces to bring home as souvenirs. The shopkeeper, a friendly local artisan, shared stories about the craftsmanship and the traditions behind the products, adding another layer of appreciation to our purchases.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves drawn back to the Medina, eager to experience its evening ambiance. The setting sun cast long shadows across the blue walls, creating a magical, almost surreal atmosphere. The air was filled with the aroma of spices and grilling meats, as locals and tourists alike gathered in the main square, Plaza Uta el-Hamman. We savored a delicious dinner at Chez Hicham, another restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan fare. The meal was a fitting end to our first day in Chefchaouen – a delicious blend of flavors, aromas, and experiences that had left us utterly captivated.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Plaza Uta el Hamman, the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen, and Ras El Ma, and I am excited to see what those places have to offer. I think we will end the day having a drink at Sunset at sunset.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post from our cozy room at Hotel Casa Miguel, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude and excitement. Chefchaouen has exceeded all my expectations. Despite having packed all the essentials, I realized I had forgotten a power adapter and my travel pillow. Luckily, I can buy a power adapter here, but I’m not sure if I can find a good travel pillow. Oh well, I'll survive.

I know that this trip will be one of the most memorable trips of my life, and I am excited to share it with you all. I hope you enjoyed this first blog post, and I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you soon.
