The Heart of the Blue Pearl

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the very essence of Chefchaouen. Leaving the comfort of Hotel Casa Miguel, we set out to explore the landmarks that define this enchanting blue city. It's amazing how quickly you adapt to the rhythm of a new place, and today I felt like I was finding my own rhythm within the blue-washed walls.

Our day began with breakfast at Cafe Clock. I opted for the Berber eggs, a local specialty, while Lena enjoyed the pancake stack. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of Mediterranean and Moroccan influences. Sipping on strong coffee, we planned our day, eager to see what Chefchaouen had in store for us.

First stop, Plaza Uta el Hamman. The heart of Chefchaouen was already buzzing with activity. Locals and tourists mingled, the air filled with the aroma of spices and the sound of lively chatter. The square is lined with cafes and shops, all painted in that iconic blue. It's a sensory overload in the best possible way. We took a seat at a cafe, ordered some mint tea, and simply watched the world go by. It was the perfect way to soak in the atmosphere of this unique place.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant life that unfolds within them.

Next, we visited the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen, an imposing structure that dominates the plaza. Although non-Muslims aren't allowed inside, we admired its architecture from the outside. The octagonal minaret is particularly striking, a testament to the city's rich history. The mosque dates back to the 15th century and has been restored several times, most recently in 2006. It's a significant landmark, serving as the main Friday mosque in the area.

As we wandered through Plaza Uta el Hamman, I couldn't help but think of my hometown, Pano Lefkara. Though Pano Lefkara is known for its lacework and silversmithing rather than blue walls, both villages share a sense of timelessness, a connection to tradition that seems to resist the modern world. It's a comforting feeling, finding echoes of home in such a distant place.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Dar El Salam. The restaurant was tucked away in a small alley. We enjoyed a traditional Moroccan meal, savoring the flavors of tagine and couscous. Lena, ever the adventurous eater, tried the pastilla, a sweet and savory pie filled with pigeon. I stuck with the tagine, a hearty stew of lamb and vegetables. Both were delicious, a testament to the skill of Moroccan chefs.

After lunch, we decided to explore Ras El Ma, a natural spring located on the edge of the city. The walk there was beautiful, following a winding path along the river. We passed women washing clothes in the stream, a scene that felt both ancient and timeless. Ras El Ma itself was a refreshing oasis, the sound of the water a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. It's where the locals gather, and it was interesting to see them interacting and going about their daily lives.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Sunset at Sunset, a bar known for its panoramic views. We sipped on refreshing drinks as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. The bar had a laid-back and inviting atmosphere.

Tonight, we dined at Restaurant Bar Chaouen, a local favorite. The menu featured traditional Moroccan dishes, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. I tried the Moroccan chicken, while Lena opted for seafood. We sat outside, enjoying the warm evening air and the sounds of the city. It was a fitting end to a day spent exploring the heart of Chefchaouen.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning a hike to the Waterfalls Akchour and Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. I'm eager to explore the natural beauty that surrounds Chefchaouen, to see a different side of this fascinating region. Lena is excited to visit a rug shop.

This evening, as I reflect on our day, I'm struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people. Everywhere we went, we were greeted with smiles and offers of help. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with new people, about opening your heart to different cultures and ways of life. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Chefchaouen, the blue pearl of Morocco.

I am so glad that we decided to make the trip from Berlin to Tangier, then to Chefchaouen. It is an experience that I will never forget.

Tomorrow, we will have breakfast at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin, lunch at Hôtel restaurant La fuente, and dinner at Mandala. I am excited to see what new adventures await us.

I am also glad that I remembered to pack my camera, although I did forget the power adapter and travel pillow. However, this trip has been amazing so far, and I am looking forward to the rest of our time here. Lena is also having a great time, and we are both enjoying the culture and the food.

Chefchaouen is a beautiful place, and I am glad that we decided to come here. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a unique and memorable travel experience.
